Alice: Madness Returns |OT|

I'm so weak, ended up giving in and buying the game today even though I have a glaring backlog. I think I just effed up and missed out on a part in chapter 1
I may have screwed up. At the part where you meet mad hatter and your supposed to put him back together I took the right route instead of left and I can't get back to that section :(

I assumed you had the choice of either and could go back to the other later.

Finished Alice 1.

...

I'm really glad that the last few areas of the game aren't as frustrating as what lead up to it :/ The first fight against the Jabberwock was just stupid hard. Jeez.

I don't know how I would have even tolerated the second Jabberwock fight if I didn't have the rifle thing.

Don't worry about it.
Once you're finished with one section, you get dumped back there again and can go on the other route. You can do them in any order. I actually thought that they both lead to the same place and so wasn't worried. Then when I found myself back there I was a bit surprised.

So do I, love the Pepper gun too.

Wasn't there a movie deal with Sarah Michelle Gellar a long time ago? I would have liked to have seen that pan out.

I'm in an Alice mood. Was the Tim Burton movie decent?

Gellar's project officially died iirc.

And just stay away from Burton Alice abomination, if you want to watch some Alice there are some twisted versions like Jan Svankmajer's Alice, Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland, hell even Townsend's Alice musical porn adaptation was better than Tim Burton crap.

I wanted to see the 2009 Miniseries ( the one with Tim Curry) but one of my friends said it's not good.

Yep.

Before I left for the maze, I saw Humpty Dumpty, and he said nothing to me. Was that a glitch, or is he just meant to sit there to look pretty? At least I noticed him to re-check the tunnel and found the rifle thing that spends all of your mana.

He doesn't talk however if you notice he very subtly, occasionaly points in a certain direction. If you go into the area he is pointing at there is a hidden passageway that contains the Blunderboss. The most powerful weapon in the game. The only other way to get that item is during the final boss fight.

So let me get this straight?

If you own an AMD GPU this game has half of the graphical bells and whistles missing because you can't use PHYS X?

I have a beast of a computer but no Nvidia... that is fucken bullshit lame and pisses me off because I was contemplating buying this game, but now that I hear this it has made me say NO BUY.

Is there a way to buy a cheap like $20 to $30 card to put in a PCIe 4x slot to use for PHYS X? Can that be done when you run 2x AMD cards in Crossfire?

Honestly Physx looks pretty fucking terrible in most vids and screens I have seen. Artistically it sticks out like a sore thumb in a lot of the implementations.

I wanna play it...

Can anyone who's playing on AMD please comment on how it looks without it? Or if they can run it with PHYS X on low? I think I read that her hair still moves right? That's a big part of it for me... cause that's cool.

Hearing about how cool the story is really tempts me... I want to play it - the spooky weirdness really makes me wanna play!

You won't miss out on too much, I think just the smoke and water effects and some of the persistent leaves and butterflies. I don't even think the hair or dress use physx, but they still look really cool.

The art design and gameplay is awesome enough to carry it without the extra physx shit anyway. I wouldn't recommend passing on it because of that.

Here's a video that shows a little of the differences.

I've got an HD 5870 and am playing with Medium PhysX on because I really like the effect that appears whenever you jump mid-air. I'm thinking turning it back to low, though, because, while still very playable, the framerate really shits the bed whenever I use the pepper grinder, or things get too chaotic, and it's really jarring when I'm otherwise getting a smooth 60fps.

I like the PhysX, going into the game initially I wasn't sure of the differentiation between which effects were PhysX and which weren't. When I eventually watched some gameplay videos without it, the combat didnt look as cool.

It gives an extra sense of visceral contact for your attacks when sludge drops down from each repeated strike to the sludgy monsters. Butterflies also look cool.

Of course it is in no way a deal breaker and the game should be played regardless, Alice's hair is the coolest effect anyway and it's not PhysX.

Hair and dress stuff still run fine on AMD (4870s here). You're basically missing extra particles from explosions, ground hits etc along with stuff like smoke and the butterfly effect.

As Zefah said though, you can run it on medium ( I did for a bit) but expect a lot of hits to fps when you're fighting goo enemies and using the pepper grinder.

This game got so panned in reviews I kind of took it off the radar, but it's getting some serious praise here, Ryan Davis gave it 4/5 stars and I generally tend to agree with those lads so maybe I should check it out.

Xbox360 version for achievements or PC version with Xbox360 controller the go?

If you have a capable PC, especialy with an Nvidia card for physx, go PC. Easy.

Set one of them as s PhysX card(instead of SLI) and you'll be good to go.

Tried that. It actually ran worse.

PhysX is just really awful in terms of performance. I won't bother with it in any games, period.

I finally played through most of the first chapter tonight and I'm completely blown away. Reviews on Alice are dead wrong. It doesn't seem like EA put much marketing muscle behind this title either which is a shame. The environments are absolutely beautiful and the character designs and art direction are worth the price of admission alone.

For those that have only played the original, this game is light years ahead of AMA in every aspect imaginable. You will not be disappointed!

I'm plowing through Chapter 3 right now.

This is Game of the Year potential here, folks. Anybody who truly enjoys video games and is missing out on this game is seriously doing a disservice to themselves.

There is so much that Alice does right, it's scary.

Game completed, took me 11 hours with a 90% completion rate. I'm going to wait awhile before I do a NewGame+.

I'm giving this an 8.5, writeup coming soon.

No, without PhysX it's 100% of the bells and whistles. PhysX just adds a little extra detail, it wouldn't make the game look like shit because of it not being active.

And last I heard Nvidia locked out PhysX on their GPU's if there are AMD GPU's present in your system, someone who's more up to date with that situation might want to fill me in on that though.

Check this (non spoiler) PhysX Comparison Video and you'll see just how little PhysX adds, basically cloth physics and extra particle effects.

I certainly don't think so. The game does a few things right (mostly style), but that doesn't excuse the terribly bland levels and crummy platforming. I can easily excuse such things if the game gave me something else worth my time, like an interesting world to traverse, but in the 2 hours that I played (might not be enough, but I seriously doubt the entire game is gonna change after this time) all I've done is go along corridors. Great looking corridors, but corridors filled with generic obstacles. I'm not saying it's a bad game per sé, but this should be nowhere near anyone's goty list imo.

It's a rare game where I find myself agreeing with reviews.

I have PhysX on high and my framerate hasn't skipped a beat.

Yeah dude, was pretty busy today and didn't get to finish it up like I planned and I'm itching to get back in. Carefully timing a sequence of jumps to overcome a set of obstacles has rarely felt more rewarding.

I certainly don't think so. The game does a few things right (mostly style), but that doesn't excuse the terribly bland levels and crummy platforming.

Could you elaborate on what made the platforming feel crummy to you? I think to jumping controls are so spot on it's almost ridiculous what you can pull of with the float and twirl mechanics. And the game designs platforming sequences that take advantage of that level of jumping fidelity. It's hard to imagine someone considering it bland.

My AMD is using low PHYSX and her hair moves beautifully. I have nothing to compare it with though.

On Chapter 2 currently but aside from some texture issues and pop in, I rank it as my favorite surprise game of 2011.

The combat is terrific, the platforming is fun, and the aesthetics of Wonderland and London capture the contrasting natures of both worlds very well. Running through the dark, depressing streets of London wishing I could be in colorful Wonderland instead was a very unique feeling that few games have elicited from me.

Strongly recommend the game for anyone contemplating its purchase.

finaly finished chapter 1 last night...did they totally leave in an unfinished boss fight?

Also the sound quality during storyboard cutscenes seems horribly compressed.

Still loving the game though otherwise.

Yeah, it's a shame they not only cut that fight., but then left the hooks in there, it's such a tease.

I like how this OT was constructed almost as an afterthought, yet since it's arrival it has barely been off the first page of the Gaming section. Word of mouth and all that.

The game is ace.

Part way through chapter 3. Loving the platforming and art design.

Ordered the art book on Amazon and I'm going to have to purchase the DLC costumes once I beat the game.

Spent all day yesterday playing through Alice 1, got to the maze.

.....this game has possibly THE worst and most frustrating combination of platforming, enemies, and weapons I have ever experienced in a game. I mean, holy fuck, yeah, which fuckhead developer thought it'd be a GREAT IDEA to not only have a lava-spitting fish monster who pops up randomly to spit fire at you that does dot damage while you're attempting to platform, but he ALSO has a fucking tongue-attack that pulls you away from the fucking platform that you're trying to land on mid-air, bringing you to your lava-filled fucking death?

Fucking hell, man. God damn.

There are literally areas of the game with monster instances that are designed to push you off of narrow passways. Seriously. Fucking asshole game designers.

Based on trophies, it looks like I'm almost done, so I'm going to soldier through the rest :I, THEN I'll start Madness Returns, the game that I actually paid for :D I trust that, at the very least, the combat's significantly improved.
I hated that bastard fish. There's something wrong when one fish can keep you totally at bay.

Alice 1 didn't age very well, but I think you'll enjoy Madness Returns. If anything playing the first one will make you appreciate the sequel. Lol

i thought it was really funny actually. reminded me of the best boss fight ever aka Mysterio in Spider-Man 2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS_zWW9jJ34 spoilers!

low Phys X is fine, i just wish my hybrid setup worked with this game, and hope the PC community gets it working.

edit: hah! they figured it out. here's what you do...

go to your Alice Madness Returns\Game\Alice2\Binaries\Win32 directory, and rename the PhysXDevice.dll to something else.

if you want to know more about hybrid Phys X setups read more here...

http://physxinfo.com/news/3334/new-hybrid-physx-mod-1-04ff-is-out/

this is working for me. haven't done performance tests yet, but pepper grinding the ground a lot didn't get me below thirty. will need to see what ruins do.

Semblance

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
For those who have completed this, how long did it take you? Is there much else to unlock, collect etc.? I really wanna play it, but I might wait for a price drop. :/

Started this game on Nightmare difficulty....bad choice :D

Checkpointing during platform sections is really forgiving but sometimes not. I've spend a while on a battle with a lot of enemies and had to redo a specific platform section everytime when I died. Since enemies two hit kill you most of the time in can get frustrating if you're still learning the game mechanics.

I will soldier on though, the game is just fun to play

This video gives a good example of PhysX Low vs. High in Alice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1sI8ovRIFY&feature=youtu.be&hd=1&t=38s

Basically PhysX Low = Off
This is so awesome.
I have set PhysX to medium. Gives practically all the destructible environemtns and extra particles but no real time fluids.
It makes the game so much more beautiful.

I'm partway through Chapter 2 now. The game gets progressively harder, better and more beautiful at the same time.

ok...sorry but i really don't want to read all the thread, so i'll just ask:

I thought it was an artistic choice. I thought it was pretty cool how it was a non-boss fight, it added a little twist.
