You can kill every drowned sailor you encounter. Use the Pepper gun to shoot the bombs out of his hands to stun him, and then wail on him till he gets back up. Rinse, repeat.
Ah, of course, thanks
(I tried bouncing the bombs back to them with the umbrella, but that didn't work, at least for me).
They've been driving me crazy but I always thought they were there more as obstacles than enemies I could kill (until that one fight). Glad to know I can get rid of them every time in the future.

Well it worth the wait, the art book is so good.

Can't wait for the game of the year voting.

I like it when I see this thread bumped. It reminds me how much I loved this game. Ironically I have posts in this very thread saying how crappy the game is. But the longer I played it the more I realized just how much was put into the game. Each stage is so different from the other, and the mini games are (usually) great.

Also, chapter 4 is incredible. The graphics are some of the best I have seen. I loved how that stage's mini game was introduced.

Spicy Horse Did an amazing work in the chapters and chapter themes,It's just sad that they didn't get the time to do some of their ideas of the stages mentioned in the artbook.

And yeah Chapter 4 is just pure porn. (I also love Chapter 5 and it's intro it was like McGee's Silent Hill)

@pakkit..a replay to your post from the other thread(Games that take advantage of their unusual protagonists)

Many people didn't get the ending or that part..anyway it's sick symbolism
the pedophile doctor dress and play the with poor kids as dolls for his sick pleasure, the game and players do the same for for Alice
..it's just sick (that McGee for you)but awesome at the same time.
No it's not, keep dodging and maintain your distance till the invisible timer runs out. Those challenges were easily exploitable.

That's cheating to me, and I wouldn't feel like I accomplished anything. I'm going to try it later today until I get it because it's bothering me right now!!

huh?How is that cheating?that part of how you can beat them, unless you want to make it harder for yourself,it's not like using the dlc outfits and weapons.

I think he's talking about the red rose paint challenge, which you can beat by just avoiding damage for a while.

As for the sailors, I don't understand how so many people had problem with them, didn't the have their own chalkboard lesson and everything? the game is not hard, the difficulty at least for me came only from key binding problems and the subsequent unresponsiveness of the controls.

Some battle arenas are time-based while others require you to kill all enemies. The one he's stuck on is presumably the latter.

Purposely avoiding conflict so I can advance when I should be able to beat that challenge feels like I'm cheating myself out of a victory.

Sure it'll be easier to just get it over with, but what's the point of that if I want a challenge?

And not all DLC outfits give you an advantage! I will be Nightmaring this game with the Cheshire Dress for fun ( with all the default weapons.)

It (the art book) arrived earlier today! Two weeks all up. The book is in superb condition aside from a tiny crease in two of the rear corners of the cover. That's to be expected, really, since it spent 14 days bouncing around the place en route to my front door.

Congrats.

I hope this mean that there is no damaged art books anymore.

Finishing up Alice again on PC, and hot damn does the game look good (and it controls better than the PS3 version too, even when using a DS3 w/ MotionInJoy). I'm thinking of replaying the PS3 version too, if only to grind for trophies. If I finish the game on the hardest setting, will I get the trophies for finishing it on hard and normal too?

y u no post in dis thred

Anyone know if you can get the Neighslayer trophy with a fully leveled up Hobby Horse, or do you have to use a level 1 Hobby Horse?

Edit: Nvm, managed to get it. Working on getting a platinum trophy for Alice.

Been playing on PC as well, it definitely is one of the best looking PC games this year. I'm on Chapter 4 and I feel this game shares a lot of sensibilities with other games I enjoy like Batman AA, Shadows of the Damned and Bioshock. I realize the gameplay wears thin in many critics opinions, but I miss action platformers like this, and am therefore able to forgive any shortcomings more easily.

Very early in this but so far this game is pretty cool. One thing that stands for me is the dialog. Has a great twinge of madness to it.

Gamefly has this used for 19.99 today, but if I get it used you do not get the code for the original right?
Grr...yesterday it was 14.99

I got it from Gamefly and there was a code in the box. I'd assume it works but I haven't tried it yet. Reason being Gamefly sends just the disc in an envelope, they don't send the whole box out to people.

Cool game so far but my god the levels are so long. Kind of burns me out to be honest, I can only really play in bursts for some reason.

I wish the old game didn't take up some of the achievements as I doubt I'll ever play it.

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Yeah I've had a few online passes actually work from Gamefly because they don't let people redeem that stuff... when you buy the game used they send you everything that was in the box new.

The only way an online pass or something like that wouldn't work, would be if a Gamefly employee redeemed the code.

But that has't happened to me yet.

Anyone know if the PSN or Games on Demand versions come with the Alice code? (like they're emailed to you or something)

If not, kinda bullshit to pay MSRP and not even get it.

Nice bump,it's good because it seems a lot of people forgot about this game in their top 10...well it's in mine anyway and for 8 bucks on Steam,it's a freakin steal. =)

Someone convince me to buy this game

Chapter 4 is the holy grail of gaming,100% Nirvana guaranteed after it!!!

That all you need to know really.

but to add more.

Well...It's my Game of the year, and the best 3D platformer this year if not in this generation too since it bring the old school 3D style with long levels and is very challenging, also Madness Returns features some the best levels you can see in video games this generation, every thing from the art style and the environments to Alice own outfit and the NPC are just beautiful and very well done.

Levels are long, some are very long ( remember mid 90s games? ) which is something you can't have usually nowadays , there are tons of collectables and Easter eggs that add hours of gameplay and value to it.

The story is amazing for video game standard, the use of Alice "craziness" just fit, American McGee even talked about something "ugly" that most other games and developer can't dare even to touch or hint about, it's really "shocking" but it wasn't in the game just for the shock factor,it was well done.

Also Best hair physics ever.

mattiewheels

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
The only real complaint is that the levels go on a little too long. It's incredibly designed, great platforming, great combat system, and it makes the first Alice look like a school project.

While I do love this game I have to disagree with the gameplay part, the platforming left a lot to be desired, is just not good, and along with the battles is terribly repetitive. The world however is pretty much the prettiest gaming world I've ever seen, some reviews really slammed the game hard, and I can see why, the gameplay is just not good, but as those reviews said, you play the game anyway just to see whats next, because the level design and art are just mind blowing.

If this game doesn't win some kind of award for the art and design I'll be pissed, it beats just about any other game this gen.

Slow DL is slow but I finally managed to get it thanks to a kind gaffer who traded with me. I'm pretty excited to jump into it after beating Skyrim.

They added the full game to the PS Store last week. If you have PS+ you can download it and play the first hour for free.
Enjoyed the trial and the game had stuttering issues all over the place, I assume 360 version doesn't have these ? I wouldn't buy PS3 version in current condition.

Man, I'm tempted to buy this on the Steam sale. But I just bought Sonic Generations at $15, which makes me feel platformer saturated. Much respect to those of you selling the game though, you came this (||) close to having me.

I'm playing through this on PC right now and it is awesome. Although I can't seem to find every little collectible (I seem to miss one of each for each chapter so far). Just started on Chapter 4 and its....breathtaking. Chapter 3 felt like
an ode to Okami.

This game is a bit long but worth every minute. I played this for at least 8 hours Saturday.

I don't know about the DD version, but the disc version for PS3 plays just fine. AFAIK the PS3 and 360 versions are more or less similar.

Gah, why is it that I always focus on the one or two negative reviews when looking to purchase ANYTHING?

Anyone care to counter this guy's points? :p

There's an entire thread of opinions counter to this guy's points. This thread in fact, he's very wrong.

He is absolutely right though. The platforming and combat (a few encounters do stand out on hard) are so casual it is pretty detrimental to the entire game. This game is held up entirely by it's story, characters and aesthetics.

Errr hes actually pretty much right. The combat is alright but its very repetitive and the platforming is nothing special. The fact of the matter is that the game is just far too long - almost half the game felt like it was filler. Chapter 2 almost made me give up it went for so long.

The art is simply incredible and I especially loved the chapter transitioning that took place in old England. Don't forget about the best hair physics of all time.
