Alien Hominid....PS2 or GC?

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I've heard they look the same? Control issues with either? I want to play it with the Wavebird but I'm not opposed to getting it on PS2.

Only issue that I've heard is of slightly more slowdown problems in the ps2 version, but neither have anything overly superior to the other.

i just picked up the ps2 version at fry's, after putting the gamecube version through the paces on a demo unit. it competently clones metal slug, and i love the visuals. i'll post here if i notice any differences.

I think the PS2 suffers from slowdown (not positive), but i know some sites rated the GC version higher

I think it plays fine on the GC, but the d-pad issue isn't critical to me like it is for others. All I know it that controls where comfortable enough for me go through the game at least once.

I hear that it has massive load times...perhaps improved on GC? Can you conceivably play through this with analog? haha. Damn, I like the Wavebird, though :(

In the Alien Hominid pimp thread, peeps said the analog control works fine.

I should've been clearer--I did play with the analog stick, not the d-pad. It wasn't a struggle for me.

I don't know what the difference is between the load times, but I know the GC ones are fairly significant when compared to the typically fast times you see with GC games. But the loads are just between levels, so the flow is interrupted that much.

GC version of Hominid allows for 4 player minigames. I would expect the PS2 version to only allow 2, unless they have multitap support.

ps2 version supports prog scan, incidentally. it's on the back of the box.

Ah cool. I didn't get to check out the boxes of both versions cause my EB only got the Cube version in for some reason.

I've been playing Alien Hominid on the GC and I've had no problems with the joystick control -- it feels perfectly natural.

The funny thing is that I've never had problems with joystick control in the Viewtiful Joe games, nor in AH, yet I can't stand using a joystick when playing the Super Mario Bros. games via the Game Boy Player. I'm not sure whether it's entirely psychological, or if VJ/AH have better joystick reading.

This is interesting. I ran into the same issue with availability. All the Gamestop's in my area only recieved the PS2 version--I had to go to my EB, which only had one copy of the GC version. I'm beginning to wonder if the intial shipment was split.

Get it for Cube, faster loading and the "D-pad" is not an issue because the game plays bettter with the analog since it has support for analog control! Get the Cube version, no slowdown and it sounds great!!!

Oh, I am loving this game, glad it came out on the Cube, and at a great price!!!

people still use the d pad to control games??

I'm wondering the same thing my self. None of this generations controllers have good d-pad. The GC pad's is the size of a nat, and I still have nightmares of fucking up my left thumb playing fighters with Dual Shock pad. The Xbox d-pad is only one that comes close to getting a "pass."

just played it for an hour or so. after a few runs, i can get to level 1-5 on a single credit. the design feels amateurish and monotone in spots, and bullets can be hard to spot, but it's just damned fun and beautiful to look at. you get lots of extra lives and shield pick-ups, so one credit play is entirely tenable, even with the vague sloppiness. it's not metal slug, but it's an enjoyable homage.

oh, there is some very mild but fairly frequent slowdown in the ps2 version. don't remember noticing any in the gc version. it isn't a big deal, but it's there. load times didn't seem unusually long, and they only happen between levels.

i quite like the dual shock 2 d-pad. its action is smooth, and more importantly it's in the primary position. i can't stand the angle at which the d-pads are placed on the xbox and gc pads, and i can't stand using the analog stick in games with digital control.

incidentally, i'm not sure how to turn on progressive scan. there's no menu option, and it's interlaced by default. i guess you need to input some button combo at startup?

Did you get a chance to test out co-op, drohne?

no, didn't try the co-op. that should be cool, though.
Definetly. I was looking at some screenshots(stupid gamestop doesn't have any GC versions yet) and it looked like it would be an excellent game to bring a friend over and play. Oh, and by any chance, did you unlock any minigames? I hear there are a lot of them.

I agree with drohne that the bullets are a bit hard to see sometimes. I've been playing the Gamecube version a bit and while I've yet to see any slowdown yet, the game doesn't feel quite as smooth as I had hoped. The animations are all nice, but the scrolling seems a bit choppy. Kind of like going back to play a PAL SNES game after playing a nice and smooth NTSC one. Too bad this isn't running at 60fps.

Good fun so far though.

Try holding down the triangle and X buttons at the same time before the game starts up. I don't have the game yet and can't confirm whether this works or not but i've seen it used to enable prog. scan on some other PS2 games.

yeah, it's more like choppy scrolling than slowdown as such. it's a very vague term, "slowdown." so it's in the gamecube version too, to some degree?

i don't think i've unlocked any minigames. i'll try that button input for prog scan now, thanks.

yup same here no Gamcube versions are Gamestop. and EB got in 2. and that includes all the gamestops wihtin 50 miles of me.

Alien Hominid is fun but really sloppy. Although even its rough edges are charming in an odd sort of way, enhancing its garage game feel. Its hard not to like a game that its creators clearly poured their hearts and souls into at a time when the industry is so dominated by cynical fare like PoP: WW.

The two UFO stages are complete crap. The view is pulled in too close to the player, enabling enemies to kill you from the corners of the screen before you even have time to react. The game is riddled with cheap deaths, but compensates by throwing ridiculous numbers of bonus lives at the player, and allowing the player to start a new game at any level they've previously reached with a full set of continues. The difficulty doesn't gradually and steadily ramp up like a good shooter should, and I don't feel the satisfaction I should feel from a shoot 'em up for making progress, since you can complete the game pretty much by brute forcing your way through with little skill. But it's got great art direction, good music, and lots of wacky bosses to kill. It's a guilty pleasure, and nowhere near as good as Metal Slug 3, but I couldn't help but enjoy it nonethelss.

it's x and o at startup for progressive scan. turns out it's in the manual. who'd have guessed.

Well the Cube version is GREAT! The second level is cool as nuts!!! I didn;t realize i could get into the cars until I played thorugh it the second time (although I did in the first level). You guys who say its a little clunky or wahtever are looking for too much out os games, they are freaking games, not tax software!

Played co-op on the Gamecube last night. Co-op definitely makes the game much more fun and a bit easier. I also liked using the analog much better than the d-pad. At least for me. Got to 2-2 when we called it quits. Loading times weren't so bad, but I haven't played it on the PS2, so I can't really compare. There's a cool flying level at the end of level 1 that's a lot of fun, though.

The PS2 version supports 4 player with a multitap.

I wasn't digging on analog control, so my vote goes/went to the PS2 based solely on the dpad.

I have the gamecube version gotten to 2-6 so far havent noticed any slowdown or anything

game is fun as hell and played it co-op last night which was damn good times

analog works great with this and the GC is what the game was built on first so personally I say grab that version

Any slowdown that was present in single player on PS2 was so minimal I didn't notice it. However, the choppy scrolling of certain sections (the snowmobile level and the part where you climb up the tower at the end of level 2 especially) was pretty annoying. Do these levels scroll smoothly in the GC version?

They are as smooth as butter in the GC version.
