All PSP bullshit goes in here

PSP firmware upgradeable
- Sony's Izumi Kawanishi confirmed that the PlayStation Portable firmware can be updated by software, which can bring in new functions and correct errors. The PSP also comes with an anti-shock system, which is widely used in portable CD players.

If Sony doesn't offer video support off of the memory sticks I'm sure some hacker will be able to manage it eventually. Divx anyone? :D

Homebrew development, here we go!
I've been surprised at how little talk there has been on the subject (at least on these boards). Especially considering there were actual games running off the memsticks at TGS.

Add in now the possibility of hackers rewriting the frontend, it seems to me that a large memstick will end up carrying a hell of a lot more than mp3s and gamesaves.

Programs? Videos? GBA roms? (ed. Ho! Ho! Ho! Homebrew roms of course! :D )

I'm definitely interested to see how versatile and accessible the PSP will be...homebrew development or even sanctioned Net Yaroze/Linux Kit type development would be great. It'd be nice if they capitalize on the memstick format to allow hobbyist devs to download a "lite" PSP SDK which can be installed on a PC and can generate executables on a memstick inserted in a flash card reader attached to the PC, allowing you to then take the executable on memstick and run it directly on a PSP.

For "homebrew development" I'd probably get one of these instead of a PSP.

Now if he just could have switched that thing on too.

Beat me to it... I was going to say great now if they can just show a PSP running a GAME off a UMD....

i wonder how good the skip protection on this is. my minidisc skips like a mofo.

What model? Never had a skip ever from mine.

I actually hope the PSP comes with a similar pouch that came with my MD player, be good for protecting the screen.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Wyh didn't they just use a slot loading solution )even though that could be considered one). I've seen many an MD player from some of my more careless friends, that have broken doors.

The PSP doesn't seem as durable as a portable should be.

My old (3 years or so) minidisc skips like crazy whenever it has to read from the disc (shuffle, changing tracks) even if the player is completely still. Though, this might be solved if i bought one of those lens cleaners.

Hmm, how do you make a slot loading mechanism on something that is supposed to be as thin as possible and with as few moving mechanical parts as possible? Is there a portable minidisc player that has slot loading mechanism?

Beat me to it... I was going to say great now if they can just show a PSP running a GAME off a UMD....
At this point, I doubt even that would be convincing enough for some. You'd still have people saying that the inserted UMD is there just for decoration and that the game runs off the memory stick.

I think I will hold off on buying from the first shipment of these things, just to be sure.
Both my Sony MD players died after 2 years (and after they were out of warranty, ha ha ha ha ha). Moving parts and tiny equipment make for bad juju.

(Actually, now that I think about it, every piece of Sony hardware I have ever purchased has bit the dust, from the sound-isolating NUDE earphones I bought (died last month, out of warranty by a week) to my oriignal Sony Walkman from 1987 (replaced with an Aiwa, which still works).)

Looks like video off of the memsticks is already built in...
Kawanishi also mentioned that the PSP will be able to play back video files, in H.264/AVC MP Level3 format. SCE is currently debating whether to release a tool for the PC that allows users to convert videos on their computer to the supported file format, said Kawanishi. In any case, since the PSP has no video out jack, users will not be able to play back movies onto an external screen.

I doubt it will take long for hackers to include support for other formats.

Hmm, games/music/anime/porno/movies... What else?

I already have one of those, but their 3D capabilities suck teh ass, and the buttons control leave much to be desired. Definitely workable, but far from ideal.

A lot of news in this article from Gamespot but this got my attention:

"Kawanishi also mentioned that the PSP will be able to play back video files, in H.264/AVC MP Level3 format. I think that would be very interesting for the PSP as a portable video player.

Oh my god, it would become an instant purchase (already is) for me if that happens.

Buy a 256-512 memory card, and then I can watch the latest scrubs episode I missed last night on my way to work :)

On a related PSP news (IGN) Sony said they're working hard to make PSP's price acceptable for everyone.
Whatever that could mean :D :D

That quote does not promise what you think it does. It talks about a convertor that would make a h264 file that you can transfer to a memory stick and play it from there.

It wouldn't surprise me though if the PSP allows for some kind of LAN access and playing videos/music off your PC working as a server. You already can do that with PDAs with WiFi (or even bluetooth) support.

either would be great. Streaming from my PC while at home (and the missus is watching eastenders), or loading onto a stick to watch while away from home.

Exactly,I convert my videos on the PC in H.264,I transfer them on the memory stick and I play them from there on the PSP.Where's the misunderstanding?

Defensor

Mistaken iRobbery!
The PSP will then be recognized by the PC as a USB mass-storage device, and PSP users will be able to simply drag and drop the MP3 files from the computer's hard drive to the PSP.

But this is not 'PSP bullshit' :D :D
Yeah I know what you mean but it's just the title thread so that everyone can easily locate all information for the PSP/DS and keep threads regarding those systems from cluttering up the forums.

I seriously don't understand how are threads like this 'cluttering' forum? Are DS and PSP news not legitimate topics of conversation? Why don't we make 5 stickied threads for "<console name here> bullshit"? Why only DS and PSP?

So what's the point of UMD movies again??
The point is that one might consider buying some of them that offer stuff that is not available elsewhere. I'd like to buy for example a music/video album from a favorite band or something like that (like the music DVDs that you can buy, but this would be portable)

Hey, what exactly prevents careless friends from breaking a slot loading device?

And I'm amazed that anyone knows enough people who have owned MD players to say they have seen "many an MD player" ;) I've had an MD Walkman for years with the same kind of loading mechanism as what the PSP seems to have and it's never given me reason to question its general durability, even after a few drops and bumps.

I can confidently say Sony is seriously fucking itself in the ass with PSP. I will also wager the machine won't come out till next April. If you know anyone at any major Jap developers, ask them how many PSPs they have in the building and how much faith they have in the console. I guarantee you'll hear a lot of laughing.

I don't make the rules but someone beleived they were cluttering up the forums and made two stickied threads. I think it's ridiculous but I'm not a mod and all previous complaints regarding that situation were ignored. I also remember quite a few people complaining about all the PSP/DS threads so they probably are the main reason behind the stickies.

I agree. Looks like the moderators don't care about handhelds. I guess they are not appropriate in a 'Gaming Discussion' forum... :(

Since you seem to have already asked them tell us what they said and tell us why they're laughing at a product they're heavily supporting....

Seeing the state of the games industry nowadays, I'd much rather listen to what companies like EA have to say about any business issue of this kind, but that would probably go against your point :p

I regarded it as sort of a disciplinary response to the OTT proliferation of DS topics immediately following the Oct. 7 Nintendo conference as well as the tendency for most DS or PSP topics to turn into DS vs. PSP heckling matches where most participants seem to be on auto-troll.

Ideally, I agree with what you're saying, but I can see why mods took special exception in this case.

I'm not seeing confirmation for things like your PC seeing the PSP as a USB storage device in that thread, sonycowboy. Nor confirmation of firmware upgradeability or how liberal they seem willing to be on general media playback, not just music.
