Not to mention, as it's been stated several times in this thread and others, this season is completely self-contained. Some actors have returned, some have not. Those who have returned are playing completely different characters.

Edit: whoops, beaten several times now :lol

OK, so I read the OP, I jumped to conclusions. Oops! Sorry guys, my bad. Particularly Funky Papa, didn't mean to jump down your throat! It just seemed like a monster spoiler at first glance.

:/

I didn't mention this because I naturally assumed he had read the opening post.

on a related note, I am ever so slightly disappointed that this is a completely self contained season. I was hoping to find out more about the events from the finale with the
baby /young boy and the prophecy
it's no big deal but some further development to that storyline would have been appreciated.

The first season didn't interest me, even though I love horror. Worth watching?

I'll give season 2 a shot since the two stories are unrelated, or so they tell us.

I forgot to mention this in the OP, I've added.

Frances Conroy is the latest star of American Horror Story Season 1 to join the spooky FX series’ second chapter, subtitled Asylum.

Showrunner Ryan Murphy announced the Emmy nominee’s casting via Twitter on Wednesday, revealing that AHS: Asylum will involve “devils and angels,” with Conroy playing “the ultimate angel.” (In Season 1, she shared the role of haunted house-keeper Moira with Alexandra Breckenridge.)

As previously revealed by the Glee boss, Asylum – which centers on a circa-1960s East Coast institution for the insane, run by Jessica Lange’s character — “is about sanity and tackling real life horrors.”

Like Conroy and Lange, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe (who in Season 1 played Chad, Billie Dean, Tate and Nora, respectively) will return for Asylum, but as completely new characters.

Brand-new to AHS, meanwhile, are Big Love’s Chloe Sevigny (as a nympho patient), FlashForward’s Joseph Fiennes (priest), Oscar nominee James Cromwell (doctor/adversary for Lange), French actress Lizzie Brocheré and Maroon 5′s Adam Levine, while Britne Oldford, Clea Duvall, Jenna Dewan, Franka Potente and Mark Consuelos are among the recurring and guest stars. American Horror Story: Asylum launches Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c.

I was really hyped for this until I read an interview that said
no ghosts in season 2
pretty much killed my hype.

But there are so many other things! I dunno, I felt like that kind of thing could get a bit too repetitious.

By the way, you can CLICK that image I posted above, lol.

I liked season one enough so I'll be tuning in for this. Glad Lange is back, she was pretty good last season. I didn't know Cromwell was in this season. Looks like a pretty good cast all around.

I also like that the seasons will be self contained story-wise. I liked Kate Mara in that hot crazy sort of way. ;) I like her sister more though.

Asylums are the most boring of all horror settings as far as I'm concerned, so I'm not enthused for this season. I'll try and keep an open mind but this seems like a step backwards for the show (and it was already behind).

Is it bad that I started watching this show and kept watching it because it was so ridiculous/bad, but then started actually liking it for what it is? I don't know, maybe I just like bad horror stuff, but it honestly elevated out of "guilty pleasure" status for me, and I feel like I may be the only one. :p There were ridiculous stuff throughout the show to be sure, and there were certain moments where I just said, "you have to be fucking kidding me Ryan Murphy." ..But there was also some genuinely interesting stuff tried in the first season. Maybe it was just trapped around all the ridiculousness. Also, I was simultaneously watching Mad Men at the time, so maybe a show this fast-paced was a nice change from
the sometimes ridiculously boring
Mad Men.

I was the same. I almost quit after the Pilot episode, but I decided to stick with it and by the end of season 1, I began to like it.

I had no idea you guys disliked the first season. Lol. It was one of my favorite shows of last year.

People tend to hate most of Ryan Murphy's stuff. I do agree it's a bit of an acquired taste.

Though some will argue that there is no element of taste involved at all. :p

I enjoyed the first season. Got a little crazy towards the end, but yeah, it's television. Everything is pulpy and over the top on TV (cough Breaking Bad cough).

I also really miss anthology shows like Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt, Outer Limits, etc., and while sadly I'm not sure those are ever coming back, anthology seasons could be the next best thing.

Tbh I had no idea who he was (Murphy) and what other shows hes done. Just barely googled him and you're right.. I disliked Nip Tuck and Glee. Lol.

I'm more of a "if the trailer looks cool I'll watch it" type of guy. In fact, I got the idea of watching AHS from a YouTube video that listed what they thought were the top 5 shows of last year. And amongst them were Justified and The Killing. I'm loving all three shows to say the least. Lol.

Can't wait for this.

Query. I've read in the OP that this is set in the 60's but that Maroon 5 guys segment in the first episode is modern day, any word on whether we are going to be primarily modern with flashbacks ala season 1, or primarily 1960 with flash forwards??

Only two of the cast members (Adam Levine/Maroon 5 guy) and some other random are present day character.
.
This leads me to believe there will be more emphasis on the Asylum being run during it's hey day rather than present day. Present day will probably be used to frame the occurrences or something.

Jessica Lange and Connie Britton made the show somewhat enjoyable. I'll watch the second season despite how silly the first season was, I like the idea of changing things up. But I really don't like Adam Levine.

Is first season only available on DVD?

I'm kind of interested in watching this, might just start without the first since there's no continuity.

That's what I'm gonna do, I'm just gonna jump in with Asylum. If S1 was available on Netflix I'd watch it...but it's not.

I saw a commercial for this with Adam Levine and thought it was a really weird ad for The Voice. Wtf is he doing acting?
