Brazilian soccer superstar Ronaldo is now part-owner of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Ronaldo, who is considered to be one of the greatest footballers of all time, has acquired approximately 25% of the Strikers and becomes part of the new ownership of the club, joining Brazilian investors Paulo Cesso, Ricardo Geromel and Rafael Bertani who acquired the team in September. Financial details were not disclosed.

English to Spanish was almost a 50/50 split

I can see the Spanish broadcast for the final overtaking the English broadcast in like 2 or 3 years.

I watched it on UDN but that's because I hate Twellman's voice more than anything.

It might pass it as soon as next year, it should take another big jump because the Spanish language station will have an English language option as well.

Mexico set to rival USA, Canada for 2026 World Cup bid

While the U.S. remains uncommitted regarding a potential 2026 World Cup bid due to current FIFA rules, Mexico has stated their intentions of joining Canada in bidding for the upcoming tournament.

Mexican federation president Justino Compeán has revealed that Mexico believes that it is deserves hosting duties after going 40 years without having a World Cup on home soil.

“This country? Why not? It also deserves a third World Cup, so the competition is going to be good, and I hope that our referee is impartial. We’re going to have Canada, the United States and Mexico giving it their all [to land the World Cup],”Compeán said. “Obviously, from 1986 to 2026, it’s a lot of years — 40 years — and so yes, we have the right to raise our hand, and we will have the stadiums.”

Mexico, who have hosted the World Cup twice in their history, features a series of World Cup-scaled venues, including the soon-to-be rennovated Estadio Azteca and a new stadium in Monterrey that is set to open in 2015.

It is widely believed that the 2026 tournament will be awarded to a nation in North America, who haven’t hosted a World Cup since the 1994 incarnation that took place in the U.S.

However, the U.S. have stated that they will not make a bid for the tournament unless FIFA amend rules regarding the bidding process, although Canada has stated their intention of submitting a bid.

MLS releases list of eligible players for Phase One of Re-Entry Draft

Major League Soccer unveiled the list of 62 players eligible for selection in the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Process on Thursday.

The first stage of the Re-Entry Process - when clubs can claim players by exercising their current options or extending them a bona fide offer as stipulated by the CBA - will take place on Friday at 3 pm ET.

The results of the draft will be published on MLSsoccer.com.

Players that go unselected in the first stage will then be available for the second stage, held on Dec. 18. According to league rules, teams will have seven days to make a bona fide offer to the players they select in Stage 2 and if an agreement can't be reached, the club will hold the right of first refusal for that player in MLS.

Any players not picked up after Stage 2 become available to any MLS club on a first-come, first-served basis.

Report: 23 US cities identified as potential sites for 2016 Copa America Centenario

According to a report on Brazilian news web site Globo, 23 US cities have been identified as potential sites to host the 2016 Copa America Centenario that will be held in the United States.

The list of possible venues reportedly came up during a CONMEBOL Executive Committee meeting, and the expectation is that the number of cities will be reduced.

The document produced by Globo shows 11 cities in one color: Seattle, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Nashville, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Washington, D.C.

Another 12 cities were highlighted in a different shade: San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, Charlotte and Jacksonville.

The report indicated that "the cities of Miami and Atlanta, which have a large concentration of Latinos, were discarded because their stadiums will be under construction during the Copa America Centenario."

Is it possible for a city to have 2 venues in Copa America?

Honestly, New York should have two based on the diasporas that live here.

Maryland goalkeeper Zack Steffen leaves school early to sign with German Bundesliga side SC Freiburg

One of the most highly-regarded goalkeeping prospects in the United States is turning pro, heading to Germany after leaving school early.

The University of Maryland announced on Friday morning that goalkeeper Zack Steffen will forgo his final two years of college eligibility in order to sign with German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg. The 19-year-old Steffen, a member of the US Under-20 team, leaves the Terps after two years as their starting goalkeeper. He is the first player since Robbie Rogers (2005) to leave the program for an overseas opportunity.

USA Today had an article on youth development at Freiburg a few weeks ago... Steffen is the third American to move there, joining Caleb Stanko and Ethan Sonis.

Freiburg uses more home-grown players than nearly all other clubs in Europe's top five leagues. Only Barcelona, Bilbao and Real Sociedad in Spain and Lyon in France outdid Freiburg's average of fielding 5.3 club-trained players per game last season

That's awesome. Means they know how to develop guys and that's exactly the type of place we want our upcoming players to go play.

Oh man, we could have used him after Henry left but I guess the club would rather have someone cheaper at this point.

According to that article, it seems like this was an option when he was at Madrid and the move failed to materialize, so this would have in theory been back in 2013 at the latest (probably before then since it doesn't indicate he went to Milan instead in those final 3 days where the move broke down) when it would have went down.

Stolz, Craven, Bono named finalists for 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy

The finalists for the 2014 Men’s MAC Hermann Trophy were announced today, and UCLA midfielder Leo Stolz, North Carolina forward Andy Craven and Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono are up for nomination.

The Bruins star midfielder has led his side to their first College Cup semifinal since 2011, and he leads his team in goals and assists with nine and six, respectively. He will lead the side Friday night against Big East champion Providence in the hopes of claiming a spot in the College Cup Final Sunday.

Craven, the prolific Tar Heel goalscorer, has scored at will this season, leading the nation with 15 goals this campaign while his team has netted 52 this year, a nation best as well. The Tar Heels were knocked out of the NCAA tournament by UCLA, but Craven’s accomplishments as a striker are outstanding when compared to his peers.

Finally, the Orange wall, Bono, has enjoyed a tremendous year in goal for Syracuse. He started and played all 21 matches for the Orange, and while making 67 saves, he only allowed 12 goals all season, a team record. Furthermore, he posted 12 shutouts and is the first goalkeeper to be a finalist since the structure of the nomination narrowed the finalists down to three in 2003.

In addition, the NCSAA released their All-America teams, highlighted by the inclusions of Stolz, Craven and Bono.

Tab Ramos Names U-20 MNT Roster for Dec. 15-22 Camp in Honduras

Roster by Position:

GOALKEEPERS (2) : Santiago Castaño (New York Red Bulls; Union City, N.J.), Zack Steffen (SC Freiburg; Downingtown, Pa.)

DEFENDERS (6): Michael Amick (UCLA; Sunnyvale, Calif.), Conor Donovan (North Carolina State; Fuquay-Varina, N.C.), Matthew Miazga (New York Red Bulls; Clifton, N.J.), Shaquell Moore (Unattached; Powder Springs, Ga.), John Requejo (Club Tijuana; Carpinteria, Calif.),Tyler Turner (Orlando City SC; West Haven, Conn.)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; Plano, Texas), Fernando Arce (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Russell Canouse (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim; Lancaster, Pa.), Marco Delgado (Toronto FC; Glendora, Calif.), Romain Gall (Columbus Crew; Herndon, Va.), Lynden Gooch (Sunderland AFC; Santa Cruz, Calif.), Joel Soñora (CA Boca Juniors; Buenos Aires, Argentina)

FORWARDS (4): Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana; Chula Vista, Calif.), Bradford Jamieson IV (LA Galaxy; Los Angeles, Calif.), Amando Moreno (Club Tijuana; Morganville, N.J.), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes; Loomis, Calif.)

I think this might be a first? There will most likely be no college kids on the final U-20 roster, yet there is a college kid getting called in to the national team (Jordan Morris from Stanford)... pretty bizarre, but then hey it's Klinsmann.

The #SJEarthquakes selected former @SportingKC goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum with the second pick in the MLS Re-Entry Draft.

Whoa, competent moves by the Quakes? First I wanted them to take Barrera from Chivas and they did... I thought Gruenebaum was one of the three guys they should target in the Reentry Draft:

These are the three guys I want in the Reentry Draft:

Andy Gruenebaum (Sporting Kansas City) - GK - 85,000
Martin Rivero (Chivas USA) - M - 50,004 - Int.
Chandler Hoffman (LA Galaxy) - F/M - 48,500

All three are cheap.
- Gruenebaum would give us an experienced and competent backup to Bingham.
- Rivero would join Perez Garcia and Barrera in our Argentinian attack.
- Hoffman would join Tyrpak and Sherrod in replacing the trio of Jahn/Fucito/Schuler.

I would've taken Marky Delgado (just called in to the U-20s) over Kris Tyrpak in the Chivas dispersal draft but other than that I can't really complain about their personnel moves for the first time in two years...

Glad to see that Gruenebaum (The Hebrew Hammer) and Kronberg (The Kronic) found homes. Realistically they were both decent keepers, I just had things I wish each one did better.

Former Sporting Kansas City goalkeepers Eric Kronberg, Andy Gruenebaum taken in Re-Entry Draft
Former Sporting Kansas City goalkeepers Eric Kronberg and Andy Gruenebaum found new homes in Major League Soccer on Friday via the first stage of the MLS Re-Entry Draft.

The Montreal Impact selected the 31-year-old Kronberg with the first overall pick of the draft, and the San Jose Earthquakes followed by snatching up the 31-year-old veteran Gruenebaum with the second pick overall.

Both players suited up for Kansas City last season – Kronberg started 20 games, Gruenebaum started 11 – before each was let go by the club at the conclusion of the regular season.

The only other player selected in the draft was former Real Salt Lake forward Robbie Findley, who was selected with the sixth overall pick by Toronto FC. Findley, 29, scored one goal in 16 games for RSL this year, his second season since returning from Europe in 2013.

The clubs that selected players on Friday will pick up the players’ current options. Players left unselected are now available for the second stage, held on Dec. 18.

Bay Area bids for major rugby tournament

Kaval said the World Cup bid is one of many events the Earthquakes would like to bring to 18,000-seat Avaya Stadium, which is adjacent to Mineta San Jose International Airport.

The soccer team is bidding for the state CIF high school football championship for a three-year cycle. Team officials expect to learn their fate early next year.

The Earthquakes also are exploring ideas about bringing a local pro rugby team and a women's pro soccer team to San Jose.

Kaval said the new stadium that is scheduled to open in March could play host to soccer events as part of San Francisco's bid to win the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Damn. That's heartbreaking for Jozy. I feel for him. Between his injury during the WC and the high expectations he's not himself right now.

Hyndman went the full 90 in Fulham's win. Seems like their coach is enjoying the pairing of him and Fofana who ran the show today. Good stuff.
