They need to make a Tony Meola award. The dude started the wave of fantastic American goalkeepers and was one of the founding members of the modern USMNT.

I am confident that Landon is looking at what Lampard is doing and got very jealous. It doesn't matter that Frank is twice the player he ever was, he'll still see him absolutely ripping the shit out of the league at 38 and think maybe I can still do it.

I am very happy to announce that I have decided to rejoin my hometown team the LA Galaxy for the remainder of the MLS season. While this decision may come as a shock to many, I want to explain how and why it was made.

Two weeks ago, I was working as an analyst on the LA Galaxy vs. Vancouver Whitecaps match and during that game, the Galaxy suffered injuries to three players: Jelle Van Damme, Steven Gerrard and Gyasi Zardes. Over the next few days, Nigel De Jong was transferred to Galatasaray and news broke that Gyasi would be out for the rest of the season. Since my retirement, I have remained in close contact with many of the staff and players on the Galaxy. I spoke with some of them that week and they jokingly asked if I was ready to make a return to the field to help fill some of the void left by the injuries and departures. I reminded them that I haven’t played a meaningful soccer game in almost two years and I certainly couldn’t fill the holes left by those players.

Over the ensuing days, I began to think about their inquiries and it struck me that perhaps this is something I should consider. I care so deeply about the Galaxy organization, and I believe I could help in a small way to aid the team in its quest for a 6th MLS championship. Further, the opportunity to have my son Talon on the field with me after a game was a feeling that I would never be able to replicate.

I then had a candid conversation with Bruce Arena and we began down the path of deciding whether this made sense. We both agreed that if this was going to happen, the expectations would be minimal and he would use me in situations that made sense for the team. I’ve spent a lot of time speaking with my family and close friends over the past several days, and we all agreed that this would be a wonderful opportunity and a win-win situation for everyone.

I know this won’t be received well by everyone. That’s ok. I’ve always made decisions in life based on two guiding principles: my own happiness and the happiness of those I love and care about. Being on the field again, being able to help an organization that has meant so much to me and having my son in my arms after a game will undoubtedly make me and all my loved ones happy. That’s all that matters.

To my fans: I thank you all for your unwavering support. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate each and every one of you. I’ve been fortunate to lead an incredible life, and I can’t wait to be on the field again and hear your cheers. Also, as all you parents know, having a child is truly a life-changing experience. Nothing would make me happier than standing on the field with Talon and the rest of my family celebrating the Galaxy’s 6th championship on December 10th. I will do everything in my power to make that happen, and I hope we are all there celebrating together!

So he's coming out of retirement and has rejoined LAG on a whim?

Ironically, I wish this also meant internationally because, fuck it. Be the US Pescadito then.

Edit:

My Labor Day swag came in today:

What's interesting is that technically LA Galaxy doesn't have the first right of refusal to re-sign him. They gave up that right in the expansion draft last year. But of course the MLS has such shady rules (more like guidelines), they will make it work because they know it'll increase both the remaining season TV ratings and the playoff ratings.

Regarding the actual news, I'm a LAG fan so I'm okay with this. I felt he retired too soon anyway. In the two years he's been retired, I've seen Landon do about a half-dozen jobs in SoCal. He's clearly restless and can't really figure out what to do next. While 32 may be old in the top Euro leagues, in the MLS that's considered prime years, so Donavon could have still been highly effective. I think he was just completely broken not playing in the 2014 World Cup and he already achieved everything he could in the MLS, so he bailed early.

But yeah, I'm sure he's seeing guys like Gerrad and a slew of other over 35 year-old players still being effective, so he thinks he's still capable of making an impact even not having played seriously in two years. Though IMO, I think he has a hidden desire to work his way back into form over the next year and make the 2018 roster as a final encore and erase the 2014 disappointment. If you asked me 6 months ago if an old and rusty Donavon could make the Russia '18 WC roster, I would have said possibly if he's motivated enough. But over the last few games, the USMNT offense is finally starting to click with the new bloods, so Donavon on the '18 WC roster seems more the stuff of fanfiction right now.

nice Heathinho jersey!

edit: LD coming out of retirement is so lol. Good luck in the waning weeks of the MLS schedule... what is the point?

IMO the league shouldn't even allow it.

The only downside to Landon coming back is that Galaxy has some young forwards like Ariel Lassiter and Bradford Jameison IV who still can't get any meaningful time on the first team.

Part of the problem, aside from a few exceptions (FC Dallas), the MLS locks out it's youth players. What's the point of the USL if you rarely or never bring them up. All these injures on the LAG roster is the perfect time to bring some of these young players up, especially since the playoffs is already a lock.

Is the Daily Mail still banned? Really good article about CFG and how NYC came to be. Coincidentally (based on the chant above), there's quite a bit from Marty Edelman who is a friend of Mansour's apparently and a New York Jew.

Still banned.

I'm taking a vacation in November and just realized it lines up with the first Hex games.

You have no idea how tempting this is to at least go to Columbus for USA-Mexico

TFC is also very good at using their young players.
