Amplitude (Harmonix) PS3/PS4 - KS (Funded, final day)

I'm still willing to bet PlayStation will throw in some bones if this get's funded. There must've been some conversations on how much this would cost and who could help who, and I doubt a sub-million dollar budget would cover this entire project. It's a little risky, but if the $775k gets funded I can't imagine they wouldn't bring some love to the game, considering they own it.

It might even be as simple as "We'll let you use the IP, but it's got to stay PS exclusive."

It makes me nervous that this has launched and has barely changed in the last few hours.

They game needs 10-20% of the people who bought the original one new to back the game. I'm not sure if it will happen :(

Give it time for news to spread around. It's bank holiday monday here in the UK. Won't be hitting most big sites until tomorrow.

by giving away I meant sell it. I'd be more willing to put money into a kickstarter of Harmonix doing this with the costs of buying back the IP included in it

what is sony gonna do with amplitude? then again at that point we're just guessing I guess

I just think there's plenty of better ways to go about this. A "spiritual successor" with a different name and some tweaks would have gone just as well considering Amplitude is still pretty niche. People would have gotten the idea and back it.

Companies don't usually sell old IP except for special circumstances or if they are literally shutting down / going bankrupt.

It depends on a lot of things, but the big factor is incentivizing with stretch goals. They were afraid launching with stretch goals would look pompous.

How the page evolves over the next few days will be critical to getting more than the just the rush-day kickstarters.

Amplitude was awesome, but Frequency was better.

I saw on the FAQ they're consider a Vita version in the stretch goals. Gonna pledge if the vita version is close by.

Will definitely pledge if a Vita version appears, but I don't plan on buying a PS4 for at least another year. Pretty curious as to why there is no PC version, but I'm assuming they explained it somewhere.

Just to make sure I understand this correctly: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/05/amplitude-reboot-announced-for-playstation-4-ps3

1.) This is Sony's IP, so it's exclusive to Sony platforms.

2.) Sony isn't funding it.

3.) Despite having a multi hundred million dollar payout from Viacom and multiple venture capitalists/angel investors backing them over time, they need to do a kickstarter for $775,000 to fund a game in an IP they don't own that the IP owner refuses to fund themselves.

This is... one of the odder kickstarters I've seen I've got to be honest.

After getting burned by ESP/Twisted Metal, not surprised Sonys hesitant to revive older IP's. They usually just don't flesh out business wise.

Amplitude was awesome, but Frequency was better.

True. The horizontal layout made it a lot harder to jump from the first track to the last track and still continue your chain.

Is there any way this will meet the Kickstarter needs?

It's hard to say. I can't even remember another Kickstarter that was only funding a console version. They should have gone with a spiritual successor so they could do more platforms.

Better that this Kickstarter exists than not exist. Not really understanding those who re complaining about this being an exclusive Kickstarter. Don't like it? Don't back it, simple.

The game won't release until February 2015, so if you'll get a PS4 in about a year, you'd already have one game to play on it if you pledged money for this and it makes the goal. :P

And there's no PC version because this is Sony's IP and I'm assuming they haven't okay'd a PC version, they've let Harmonix use the IP probably by them agreeing to make it PS exclusive.

This might sound weird, but Amplitude would be a great game to support Morpheus. It'd be a huge rush flying through the tunnel at high speeds in VR with all the trippy visuals, aside from just being fun to play.

Seems like there is some unwritten rule that kickstarter = mandatory PC version. Hopefully mods will start squashing the platform whining/port begging soon.

The thing to understand is that this is a message board. A free exchange of ideas is encouraged!

True, but port begging is frowned upon on Gaf because it limits discussion on the game in favor of the developers platform choice.

This is not port begging though. It's an odd kickstarter in its premises and it's natural people discuss its ramifications and its success possibilities.

So we have an american developper wishing to make a game with an IP hold by a japanese company and for that using kickstarter.

Iron Galaxy + Paon + kickstarter : Windjammers HD

Do it

it won't ever happen :(

How about they get Sony themselves to fund it? It's their IP.
Sony doesn't want to, this is the the only way we are going to get this. Why whine about this? Wouldn't you rather get sequels to great games this way than live without them? Why does it bother you than it goes through Kickstarter? That's just silly.

That Rock Band money seems to have run out quickly for them.
Didn't Harmonix spend a lot of money on retaining the rights to Rock Band when that whole peripheral rhythm game apocalypse was going on a year or two ago? They really aren't as rich as you assume they are. Certainly not rich enough to spend almost a million dollars in a game's development when they aren't sure they can even make that money back.

Ramifications are that this game either gets done or not. Success possibilities without Kickstarter 0, with Kickstarter > 0.

As hyped as I am for this, this is a pretty weird Kickstarter

Im actually really curious why they didn't do this..They dont have any of the music from the original.

BTW they are answering pretty much all the questions addressed here in the livestream.

This Kickstarter is essentially a test whether they will dedicate their resources to this.
775k is the minimum amount on whether or not they will make this game =/

Put down 20.

Never played amplitude, but it does sound interesting. Also strange that this is probably the one kickstarter game that isn't coming to pc.

If this game gets done through Kickstarter the direct ramification is that old console exclusive IPs can be revived if the IP gathers enough interest and the KS goal is reasonable.

So they just said in the Twitch stream that 775k isn't even the whole budget of Amplitude HD, like I assumed. They are putting in some of their own money.

Like they are being so open about the funding and such....I did figure that the 750,000 was not the whole budget, but was in fact a hole in their budget they needed filled

Amplitude was a wonderful game.

Except for the Slipknot level. Not only because Slipknot isn't my kind of music but because I could never, for the life of me, work out what the rhythm was in the verses, which made the song almost impossible. I did complete every song on the hardest difficulty available, but I will never score perfectly on that Slipknot song.

Of course now, thanks to LCD TVs, I can't play it any more (that and Gitaroo Man *sniff*).

Drake just said they will be taking out roughly a million of their own pocket even if the 775k is funded.

Why such a short campaign? Did they say anything about that?

Basically that guys are coming off of the fantasia project and 18 days is the point where they need to move guys onto new projects. It was intended to go up at PAX but it took longer to sort out ( making sure sony where OK with the licensing etc)

If it gets mentioned on the right shows this week and next, it could have some strong ones.

Maybe. I feel this type of kickstarter will have a strong core group of backers that will be active within the first day or two of the launch of the campaign then peter out. I suppose I don't know how popular the original amplitude was though. Being PS3/PS4 only doesn't really help in that regard either not that I mind it directly

I dont really understand the complaints about the Kickstarter campaign. What is the difference if you pay $15 now and get the game when its out, or wait and pay $15 when its released? You still get the game (assuming that the Kickstarter campaign goal is met that is). Its not like you pay $15 or something and get nothing.

Oh my god, please put Funny Break by Orbital from the original Frequency. Please, dear lord please. They had the best remix.

I LOOOVE Amplitude. One of my favorite games ever. I don't know how the Triggers on the DS4 will feel, but I hope they pull it off. I never play with the face buttons.
