The apple apps are built into the operating system, but they suck. So if o say hey Siri give me directions to home it pulls up iOS maps, which is significantly inferior to google maps. Same for music, podcasts, etc.

I'm not sure if this is actually better on android, but I happen to prefer googles apps much more so it's less of an issue (I think there was a study recently hat way more people, even iOS users, use google apps.)

Is "ok Google" useable by other apps? I haven't found any non Apple ones that hey Siri works in.

I believe these apps are integrated with Google Now(i.e. "Ok, Google").

In fact, here's a very comprehensive list of commands that can be done.

I get my Nexus 6p tomorrow allegedly!

/excited!

How do I get one of those cardboard thingies for VR?

You don't want Google cardboard. Well, you don't want to pay for Google cardboard. Especially not after they gave a load of Star Wars ones for free.

Search for "free porn cardboard".

I can't decide if it's worth moving from my LG G3 to the 6P. That phone looks so good, but it's not like my G3 gives me any issues... and I'd surely miss the SD slot and removable battery.

How do the cameras compare?

the Nexus 6P's camera is the best Nexus camera thus far (not exactly an achievement). It supposedly uses a Sony lense meant for a point and shoot camera.

Compared to the Note5 and V10, it seems to hold its own ground too. I think Android Authority rated it as the Best Smartphone Camera of 2015. MBKHD rated it as one of the top 5 for him too.

i do not think it is worth. I'd wait for 2016's flagships and/or a price drop for N6P.
I am in a similar situation. I do not need to upgrade my Note 4,I really enjoy it, but the freak inside me wants the latest.... but this hasn't been a great year. Not many improvements and instead fe seem to lose features.

So this app Chromer, is pretty damn dope. It opens all links in Chrome custom tabs, even if the developers of the apps you use haven't implemented the feature yet. It's so much faster than using the regular Chrome app, but you still get your passwords, history, cookies, all that jazz since it's essentially still Chrome.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/12/22/chromer-opens-all-of-your-links-in-a-chrome-custom-tab/

Been using it for a few days, and it's a lot faster than even webview, and that was faster than normal chrome.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Bought a pair of cheapie BT earbuds. I know they are gonna suck, but they were only $25 on sale at Target.

I tend to kill earbuds anyways even nice pairs so I figure if I can use these for 6 months to a year for the price fuck it I'm good.

Only worry is they didn't say what BT spec. They probably 3.0 and not 4.0. Oh well it was a cheap throw away purchase.

This year is the easiest ever. 6S/6S+, 5X, or 6P.

Well I have an iPhone 6 ATM so I'm switching back to Android which makes it easier, but even then there's a lot of choice. I'm looking around all 'ooh the 6P looks good, oh but the screen and camera on the Note 5 look great too, oh but now the 5X is one sale' and I'm back to square one :S

Plus there's the fact that the new flagships will be out in a couple months which muddy's the waters, but then they'll be hella expensive so...

If you're OK with the size get the 6P.

Done.

Well it's a toss up between that and the Note 5 right now. What puts the 6P over the edge for you if you don't mind me asking?
if you get note 5 over the 6P I'm going to PM a mod to have you banned from GAF.

It's slick hardware if you don't mind the size, good camera and display and all that jazz. Most importantly though is it has stock android which gives you the latest updates. I still don't have marshmallow on the S6 I own and samsung just delayed it for the note 5 apparently. And marshmallow isn't that major of an update. Imagine the next one!

Stock is always best imo. Samsung phones have good features here and there but the problems outweigh anything else.

Good display is pushing it. Viewing angles are terribly bad and direct sunlight visibility is abysmal. Otherwise it's a too notch phone, too large in my opinion but enjoying it otherwise.

Goddamn, phone shopping can be such a pain in the arse sometimes. Too much choice!

Decisions, decisions...

Get an S7 in March. Yes, you'll pay more but it comes with microsd support, allegedly.

--

I'm the opposite of you as I'm damn picky about what device gets the privilege of being held by me. 5.2 inches is my limit and every smartphone approaching G3 height is not allowed in my palm. None of this mandatory two handed use fuckery either. By this time next year this narrows it down to:

iphone 7
The Z6C (hopefully the version of the Z5C meant for Merica without the camera problems or lag)
Maybe the Moto X 2016
S7

^^ That sounds about right in my book so here's to another of year of Android OEMs telling me to buy an iphone because small hands. Knowing One Plus they'll skip on NFC because screw the west.

How to buy an Android phone:

Do you know what you want? If yes, get it.
Does cost matter? If yes, consider options.

Otherwise get a Nexus. It's the Android phone you get. People without a Nexus either knew or didn't know what they were doing.

What problems does the Note 5 have?

Was this posted? Google planning a new smart messaging app according to WSJ.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/google-plans-new-smarter-messaging-app-1450816899

this is gonna be the one guys!!!!1!

For its new service, Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., plans to integrate chatbots, software programs that answer questions inside a messaging app, the people familiar with the matter said. Users will be able to text friends or a chatbot, which will scour the Web and other sources for information to answer a question, those people said.

edit: and a sick burn because why not:

slow ass updates software updates, runs touchwiz which comes with its own set of problems (worse battery over time, memory problem is still unfixed as far as I've read, etc...). It's definitely not a bad phone but stock4lyfe.

I'll give you the software updates are an issue. Touchwiz isn't bad, I use it everyday and I actually like it. I have no memory problems with it either. I haven't had it long enough for the battery thing, if it's even an issue. The battery issue I did have was an app running all the time. Oh, I have a Note 5.

it's not so much a battery issue as it is a performance issue, for some reason the more you do to a samsung phone the worse they get over time. It's a good phone don't get me wrong but if you don't mind size and don't really care for stylus features I find it impossible to recomment it over the 6P.

Your right. I've owned Samsung phones exclusively for the past 5 years. They have the worst background data management. Things just get garbage over time. Not even cyanogenmod can fix it.

Millions of people use TouchWiz every day. That doesn't make it ok. Also doesn't magically make that stupid overly aggressive RAM management go away, either.

Gottcha, this is my first Samsung phone, so I'll see how it goes. So far it is the best phone I have owned. I'll see how much I like it come October 2016, which will be one year of ownership.

I believe the RAM management issue was on the S6, I have no issues with the Note 5 with the RAM management. Everyone has their opinion on Touchwiz, today's Touchwiz is very different than earlier versions.

touchwiz is completely fine. If every phone looked the same software and hardware wise then might as well get Iphone.

seriously I love how each manufacturer puts their own spin on how android should be. If you do not like it use nova for 99 cents and look will change.

Note 5 or others like that will also get you Samsung pay which is awesome.

I love android but I hate people insisting on everything looking same way. Software touches are required to differentiate and improve software.

Vanilla android is very dry and does not have enough features. Honestly it should be only in background.

It's not just about the looks (frankly that's the least of Touchwiz's problems) performance greatly suffers too with these OEM customisations and it delays Android updates for those devices. I will have been using Android M for 9+ months before non-Nexus users, that's if they get it at all and if their carrier also doesn't delay it.

Stock Android is fine for features.

The Galaxy s6 is noticeably faster than the Nexus 5x. The 5x also has lag when multitasking or using Snapchat. It's probably the worst performing phone I've ever used when it comes to snapchat. Stock android isn't the end all be all.
