Finally finished Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Man, what a ride. I'm not going to give a synopsis of it considering how popular it is amongst a lot of normie anime fans. Just going keep this review short ands sweet. This probably has to be one of Trigger's best work. And they should be proud of it. There's a lot of love and effort that went into this for sure. How dynamic the camera work is. How the camera lingers on a character's face to get across the emotion that they're feeling. Not only that, it definitely has 90's anime aesthetics to it. With its over-the-top violence and sex, it definitely reminds me of Cyber City Oedo 808, Wicked City, Armitage III, and Angel Cop (albeit not as great animation). Trigger really nailed the look and feel of the game. They made Adam Smasher look like a complete bad ass. They made David Martinez (the mc) a compelling main lead. And Rebecca... well, I get to her later. But yeah, it's definitely an unique series that doesn't along quite often. We rarely something that has that 90's grit and grim to it and this is it. Only caveats I would say it has Trigger's animation which isn't the best but is still good, over exaggerated and very colorful. Also some characters and some of the story don't really get that much and aren't that fleshed out. But beyond that, there isn't too much to complain about. If you know that this is a prequel to the game, then you can kinda figure out where it is going. Also shout out to Trigger for standing behind their project and putting their foot down on the character Rebecca. Rebecca is probably a lot of people's favorite character. She brings a lot of fun and wildness to the series. Originally, CD Projekt Red wanted the character removed because she's a loli. And they simply responded, no the loli stays. This definitely put Trigger high up on my list of favorite anime studios. Anyways, this definitely one of Trigger's best works for sure and definitely in the running for AOTY. 9/10

I haven't really kept up with macross at all over the years despite it being what got me into mechs. Would the watching order be frontier -> delta -> and this show you just posted?

Also all these new shows showing up is real nice
Yup, that's the right order. the video is from Macros Delta movie 2 (zettai live, new original story, the first movie was retelling of the tv series). You can also watch the two movies of Macross Frontier.

Right now is the 40th anniversary of Macross. They announced the last live for Walkure (music unit in Macross Delta), So most likely we'll got a new Macross in the near future.

it definitely reminds me of Cyber City Oedo 808

Just finished Call of the Night, gf and I both loved it. Pretty funny and some nice art throughout.

Edit:
Also watched Edgerunners, never played Cyberpunk, but thought it was amazing. Trigger continue to prove why they’re one of the best studios in the industry. Great art, good music, touching story, overall wonderful.

I’ve actually not watched the anime version yet, only read the manga. I’ve heard the anime is really good though they do leave out a few things that make the characters feel more fleshed out in the manga.

The story takes place in the early 1900’s after the Russo-Japanese War. Sugimoto is a former soldier who made a vow to a fellow soldier who died to raise money for the soldier’s wife to get surgery to fix her failing eyesight. He soon learns about a local tall tale about Ainu miners who discovered a massive amount of gold with one of them murdering the rest of them. The man was arrested and he resisted torture by police to give up the gold‘s location, and instead put tattoos on the back of many fellow convicts that when all viewed together reveal the gold‘s location. Eventually these convicts escaped and scattered.

After Sugimoto discovers proof that the tall tale is real, he manages to survive a ferocious bear attack with the aid of a young Ainu girl hunter named Asirpa. They decide to work together to find the all the escaped convicts which can lead them to the gold, as Sugimoto only wants enough for his friend’s wife’s surgery, and Asirpa feels the gold should be used to aid the Ainu people and she also hopes to find her father’s killer as she reveals he was one of the Ainu miners.

Sugimoto and Asirpa soon gather allies, but also face against two dangerous groups. One led by First Lieutenant Tsurumi who wants to use the gold to finance a military coup in Hokkaido, and another led by Hijikata Toshizou, a former vice commander of the Shinsengumi and heralded as the final samurai, who wants to use the gold to recreate Hokkaido into an autonomous country. And for you history buffs out there, yes the manga has quite a few actual people from Japanese history in it though the events are mostly fictional (the real Hijikata died decades before the year Golden Kamuy takes place).

The manga also excels at highlighting lots of interesting details about the culture, hunting, and food of the Ainu people and others during this time period. And does so without making it feel like the story went on pause to just be educational.

I’m not sure I could find an exact comparable anime or manga. It’s a seinen manga, but while characters can die, the body count (so far where I’m at) isn’t super high nor is the tone depressing. It can go from a sad moment to a fun, goofy moment in the same chapter and not feel like mood whiplash. The humor can feel vaguely like JoJo’s but nowhere near as extreme for the most part.

I just think it’s an excellent read. I’ve never felt bored and it always keep me invested. That’s all I can say.

The HiDive app and service are terrible. It always resetsthe language to Spanish or Portuguese no matter how many times I set it to English. It’s always going into “maintenance”, and the interface loads slow and cuts between menus. Horrible service compare to crunchy roll.

Glad I finished Call of the Night before the free trial ended. The site is utter garbage. Beware if you are thinking of signing up.

Finally got around to seeing what Vinland Saga was all about and I have to say I was throughly unimpressed. The animation looked cheap, the character designs were not compelling, and some horse riding scenes looked like amateur hour levels of animation. Have no idea how this got so much praise when it came out.

It loads so slow for me too

Not to mention I hate how you can't change the color of the subtitles. It either yellow or white. Can get hard to read. Wish I could change the subtitle color to black so I could read the subtitles much easier

I’m waiting for Mob Psycho to build up a few episodes first, but I 100% plan on watching it. I loved the first 2 seasons and rewatched them both recently.

First episode of Mob was great, as usual. Still haven't watched the second episode.

Spy x Family is every bit as enjoyable as the first cour too.

Gundam G-Witch is interesting too. Give me 2D mecha animation and I'm in.

Anime kyodais, is Mob Psycho interesting? I keep crossing paths with recommendations of it on reddit.

And I need something to binge while I wait for new Bleach episodes.

It’s really good. The animation is great, there are a lot of funny scenes, and some nice food for thought too. The dynamic between Mob and the scammer exorcist he assists is the highlight of the show. Mob is a psychic who can banish spirits and the blonde exorcist guy takes him with him to do his job for him, all while fooling Mob into thinking he’s a brilliant exorcist. The twist here is that Mob ends up learning important lessons from his “master” in ironic ways.

I also LOVE that Mob, who is a shy guy, is actually making consistent efforts to improve as a person in his daily life. You don’t usually see that in anime.

I really like Mob Psycho.
It's similar to One Punch Man in some ways (same author after all) but Mob is a better and more developed character while Saitama is very one note and at this point basically became a side character in his own manga/anime.

Well, Summer Time Rendering was quite a ride. A shame that this wasn't as talk about as it should have been but it's easily in the running for AOTY. The story is as follows: Following the death of his parents, Shinpei Ajiro grew up with the Kofune sisters Ushio and Mio before heading to Tokyo to live alone. Two years later, he returns to his hometown of Hitogashima Island, Wakayama Prefecture to attend Ushio's funeral following news of her drowning. However, Shinpei becomes suspicious when he receives news of strangle marks around Ushio's neck, implying that she was murdered intentionally. Now haunted by her "ghost" and assisted by Mio, Shinpei tries to find the answers to what really happened to Ushio and possibly save the residents from a strange dark enigma. (Source: Wiki)

The studio behind this is OLM, who famously worked on '97 Berserk. And they had no problem adapting this as well. Animated superbly and had some amazing action set pieces. I was actually taken back at how well animated the action scenes. The slower scenes were animated pretty good as well. The island that the characters on island feels live in and I can see myself there. OLM did a terrific job on this.

The characters even from the villains were really fleshed out and something happens to them, you can feel the loss. When a character Shinpei knows from childhood dies, they have a moment to reflect on his and his friends' memories with that character. I really appreciated that. Shinpei, himself, is a pretty likable character and isn't some op character with time powers. He does have vulnerability and weaknesses to his power and it plays well into the story and it felt never contrived or out of place.

The real weakness I would say the anime has is that it does shy from some of the more heavy fanservice-y scenes. Other than that, it's a fantastic show that you shouldn't miss out on. (finished 8.9/10)

Anime was like a spit in the face(kinda like Berserk 3d stuff). Original drawing a super detailed while animation(and overall feel) look soapy as hell.

Gundam 08th MS Team is now available on the gundam.info youtube channel. Someone recommended it and I really enjoyed it. Plus it's only 11 episodes long so it's not as long as some of the other series. Actually, there's also a 12th episode but I had to watch it elsewhere as it's not available with the others for some reason. Looks great too for a show from 1995.

I also recently watched Cyberpunk EdgeRunners and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It reminded me of MS Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans - you saw that tragic ending for the main character coming from a mile away but it was still sad to see. I wish this had been the plot for the game with these characters.

Now my anime backlog is down to 29 shows remaining...

I think this is why I did not like it. Never liked 90s Cyberpunk stuff and this was still too close to that.
I liked a lot of background details but overall still too much 90s Cyberpunk.
Maybe it is different if you are a fan of the game (never played the game either).

Personally looking forward to Tearmoon Empire.
The narrator's voice will make or break this series.

I was surprised how much I really liked that series. I have yet to watch season 2.

The 'go toubun no hanayome' movie is also screening in the west over the next few months, has anyone seen it or going to see it?

I have to watch The Quintessential Quintuplets though. Didn't know there was a movie coming out

The movie is the adaptation of the final arc and ending. The first anime season was very low budget, the manga was way better.

I'll start reading the manga than

I haven't watched The Promised Neverland since I heard the animes not great and that they rush to the ending. I'm going to start to read the manga instead

Watching Aoashi at the moment. This show is for football dummies. As someone who watches and plays the game, I roll my eyes a few times per episode at some of the stuff being spouted. Not that it’s necessarily wrong but they dramatise even the simple things in football.
