Anti-Trump Conservatives react to state of the Republican Party after Trump's Win.

Obama should withdraw Garland's nomination and put out a less palatable and more progressive candidate. Just to ratchet things up a bit.

I'm torn on that. On the one hand, he should do absolutely everything that he can with his time left to fuck with the republicans in congress, because they deserve much worse. But on the other hand, it's a pretty shitty thing to do to Garland, who would certainly be a totally reasonable and qualified SCOTUS judge.

Agreed. And Breyer, RBG, and Kennedy are probably gone next term, so Hillary will have the ability to shape the court.

Someone else said it best in poligaf,

"Clinton: God she's such a phony. All she does is pander, you can't believe a word she says!
Trump: He's a real genuine guy. All the crazy stuff he says is just pandering, you know deep down he's a liberal and a-ok!"

It's pure tribalism.

You get the same nonsense in sports. But at least it doesn't matter there 99.9% of the time.

Game Change 2016 will be the best one yet.

The Bernie-Tad-Jeff trinity sounds like its own special kind of shitshow.

It's hard to say if this will cause the party to pivot. Trump's successes have very little to do with ideologies and parties and more to do with his astounding skills at getting over on the news media. He could very well be an outlier should the party face crushing defeat at the end of this election. I know most on GAF would like a pivot to occur but most analysis I've seen point to that being unlikely if they lose the general. Then again, he has a way with defying early estimates so who knows.

The fact you have some establishment republicans saying they will vote for Hillary instead of Drumpf should speak volumes. Not to mention his horrendous polling with women and minorities.

It's not even that surprising. Hillary's tax increases are known, and pretty reasonable. To the business wing of the GOP (that couldn't give a rat's ass about social stuff), that's a godsend compared to the likely havoc a Trump presidency would cause to the economy. The dude is poison on the market (the only reason he's rich is because of his initial massive start from his dad). No way do the business-first people pick that over a moderate tax increase. It'd be insanely bad for their long-term investments.

Stability > short-term cost.

And my relatives were all Cruz or Bust. They're super religious, and they find Trump to be immoral. They'll likely hitch onto Gary Johnson, but that's still a bunch of GOP votes that go somewhere else.

I really want to see who Trump picks as a running-mate. I mean, Christie has clearly been vying for it (I think he actually wants a chance at punching Hillary Clinton in the face), but I wonder if Trump will go with someone else.[/URL]

Kasich, perhaps? I have to imagine it's going to be an establishment sort.

Nice username.

I know people are enjoying the implosion of the GOP, but I really do hope there is some genuine self reflection.

Not all Conservatives have contributed to the hateful rhetoric that's enabled people like Trump to prosper. Their party has been hijacked by radicals and it's sad.
the modern republican party (Nixon and later) has been held together and has won elections on social conservatism. of course the true agenda of the party is fiscal conservatism and protection of the billionaire boys club.. but that ideal and that ideal alone made Republicans more and more difficult to elect in the 50s and 60s (between 1933 and 1968 there was only one republican president elected).. hence the attachment to anti-civil rights rhetoric (aka social conservatism) in the late 60s and beyond to boost votes from southern evangelicals

So the big question then comes down to..... what IS social conservatism........... if it's not hate/fear... then what is it?

That hasn't been true for a long time. All Republicans do when they get in power is blow out the budget with unfunded tax cuts.

If anything this makes reflection on part of the GOP more unlikely. They can just attribute their election debacle (if it comes to that) to Trump, who is not a true conservative. A true conservative would have clearly won against such a weak candidate like Hillary. And Trump was forced on the GOP by the MSM, and true conservatives already know that the MSM is out for them.

If anything they will try to put in some presidential qualification requirements to prevent someone like Trump again.

Ted Cruz would have been a "better" candidate for the GOP because there would have been less excuses after his loss (though MSM probably would still be brought up).

Well, this is what Republican voters wanted.

Trump took the bigoted undertones of the party and brought them to the surface. Made a platform out of it, even.

It's the ultimate case of if you make your bed and now you have to lie in it.

Social progress will continue to advance as it always does, and once again hindsight will remember social conservatives on the wrong side of history.

The whole GOP platform has the change. They are finished if they aspire to be the KKK and religious imperialism party.

Craziest part about this is like Hilary and Obama to some extent are way more centrist than they are as far left as the fox news has led people to believe.

Yeah, as someone who normally votes republican I will have no problem voting for HRC. She is not gonna shake up status quo like Bernie would've tried to.

Reading RedState last night was non-stop hilarity.

Unfortunately, we're almost certainly doomed to a Cruz nomination in 4 years as Republicans try and rationalize the loss as being because they didn't nominate a "true" conservative.

And considering Hillary is insanely unpopular and I can only imagine will become more so as President, that makes it a scary proposition.

I think what's feels the worst for them is that beating Hillary would be trivial for even a halfway decent candidate. But they couldn't muster one.

Donald Trump is backed by the KKK and Neo-nazis. He advocates war crimes, is a massive racist, and has a terrible grasp on politics. Why would anyone think he's not that bad?

Yeah but have you heard how Hillary sounds when she yells? I think that's the real issue we should be talking about and also we should talk about how horrible she is, for like ten pages until everyone forgets whatever horrible thing Trump said or did.

Oh right, rational conservatives are out there.

It's also talk. It'll come down to women's rights again-- mainly, abortion-- and they'll all vote for Trump.

"The rights of the unborn" Jesus Christ. Just not the rights of the kids eating one meal a day.

As a non-American watching this from afar I've been constantly stunned at the media-circus this election is. What happened to the issues the US is facing?

I'm sorry to say but the current state of the United States has brought this on themselves.

So uh...Trump as President is actually potentially a thing given the seeming hate (I quite like her) towards HRC?

Where is Josiah Bartlet when you need him??

lmao "hope for genuine change for the GOP after Trump loses in general."

lmao at """"moderate""" or """"rational""" members of the GOP reforming the GOP.

No no no no no the whole GOP establishment gotta burn the fuck down for me to even remotely care for an opposition party.

The capitalists, the imperialists, the fascists, the theocrats, the NRA defenders, the industrialists, the jackals that profit from disabled workers getting paid below minimum wage for a honest day's efforts, those who defend abusive and shitty HMOS in America, everyone and anyone who has aided and abetted in the GOP effort to make Obama look weak in the eyes of the world in the last eight years, can go fuck right off.

Conservatism is an ideology of those who cannot cope with the general concept of globalization in the 21st century.

Republicans are nationalists, not conservatives.

This is exactly what people thought would happen after 2008 and 2012.

He MUST choose a woman right?

He needs to choose someone with credibility, and preferably someone who is coherent.

Adding a woman on the ticket will not prevent him opening his mouth in the future about issues relating to women and then consequently insulting them.

Republican are imploding, Democrats are imploding.

Who will really win?
Lol what?

Dems have their candidate, Bernie staying in it isn't a big deal. Now that Trump is the GOP nominee Hillary is going to start looking much better by comparison, her approval ratings are already improving significantly (she broke even in the latest CNN poll). Trying to equivocate the two is foolish.

I'll be disappointed if it isn't his daughter

You mean Ivanka, right?

He needs to choose someone with credibility, and preferably someone who is coherent.

Adding a woman on the ticket will not prevent him opening his mouth in the future about issues relating to women and then consequently insulting them.

Ivanka is all of those things, but I don't think she's even publically supported any of her father's positions, has she?

I think he has two other grown ones, though, so there's a well of potential VP candidates straight from his loins.

(ETA: Apparently Donald only had two girls. Ivanka and Tiffany. And Ivanka has been campaigning for her father quite hard, apparently. And she barely makes the cutoff to be his running mate, as she'll be 35 by inaguration. Not that he will choose her in reality, of course. He's more liable to choose Trump Jr.)

This is going to be a national "legitimate rape" story every week until November and it's going to cause havoc on down ticket races. It's amazing
