And this is -against- the Zune. Any sales figures for that, or would they be too emasculating for Microsoft to admit? :D

Absolutely incredible. That blows away the most aggressive estimates. 0_o

And shares are down 2.2% right now after hours. W.T.F.?

Maybe some people believe in the classic "buy on the rumor, sell on the news" thing? Short term investors would sell now.

Don't worry, by 2039 MS will be able to make their big stand with Zune 3000.

Wait till they get that iPhone interface into their regular iPods too ... wowza.

I want a Mac or a Macbook Pro but I don't know whether to buy now or to wait.

Just buy two IPhones instead.(Of course you would be sending the second one to me!)

I saw a top 10 list for December and Ipod had 8 spots and Sansa had the other two. Zune couldn't even crack the top 10.

Some detail in a Reuters article:

But the forecast for the current quarter lagged analysts' targets and shares of the company, known for its cautious outlook, slipped in after-hours trade.

"The guidance is pretty conservative, more so than what people were expecting," American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu said. "The iPod business is stronger than most people were expecting."
This is yesterday's earnings. It's all about the forecast. Same thing bit Intel yesterday when we reported - beat expectations, lagged on the forecast.

Holy shit, these are beyond amazing numbers. I remember analyst's speculating that it would take an act of God to top 2005's Q4 fiscal year, but this is unbelievable.

Amazing.

I didn't think they would reach those numbers - the iPod video was barely upgraded at all (just software and it was given away in a firmware update too for older iPod 5G owners). The nano wasn't really much different either (besides more colors).

Pretty impressive how much they sold with just minor changes to the line (aside from the shuffle). Imagine what the touch-screen iPod will sell when it's released.

I like to see MS get their asses handed to them.

However on the other hand ... I do sort of worry that Apple themselves might be getting too powerful. Oh well.

I really want a ipod similar to the iphone, without the phone part.

I want a widescreen ipod, and the tilt and touch functionalies are icing on the cake and nice inclusions which should be made.
