Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I tried iChromy, and while I love the feel, it lacks soooo much I have grown to depend on with iCab. I hate that it has a "Read later" list, but doesn't integrate itself with "Read it Later". And iCab's last update added an awesome swipe to switch tabs option that Safari on Lion is also getting (And I assume maybe Safari on iOS in iOS 5) that is just awesome. Swiping it much easier for switching tabs than aiming for a small tab area. Very convenient. Also I haven't seen any option to import bookmarks. Or any options at all really. I guess it'll develop over time.

I with the Chromium team would actually port the real Chrome and its support for extensions to iOS. THAT would be amazing. Especially if extensions worked OOTB the same way they do on the desktop and if the app had the same syncing options. Then I could have Chrome on everything across the board.

But I would pay top dollar to whatever iPad/iPhone browser gets native Xmarks support. Seriously, how has no one done this yet? Xmarks is well known and so convenient.

It does.

It sends links to Read it Later, but I have not found any way to make that button show those links. There are no options at all. Anywhere.

Ah! Thanks for the tip. Yep, the screencap shows nothing wrong... will have to replace this damn thing. Just hope that the Apple store have one to exchange for me... they're still pretty hard to come by I hear? (UK here)

Apple Stores try to keep a stock of replacement units, so don't necessarily equate stock for sale with stock for swapping.

Is that in addition to the 'swipe to navigate through history' or has that been removed completely in favor of switching tabs?

I dunno. I couldn't and still can't get gestures to work in iCab at all. The swipe is one finger drag to the left or right to change tabs and works by default. The gestures you set up in options never worked well at all for me. Always activating when I didn't want them and never when I did.

I was asking about Lion, I haven't tried the newest developer releases. The last time I used Safari in Lion the dragging pages was for reloading previous pages not switching tabs. The switching tabs in iCab is very cool, would love to see it in Safari too.

ICab has been such crap lately. It lags, freezes, and chugs along. If you recall, I posted the email I sent to the dev and his response. Sucks that Apple is gimping third party browsers.

I'm back on Safari and it is SO much faster.

so that's what happened. I'd been wondering.

Yeah, it's such a disappointment. iCab was full of features. I went to Safari temporarily but I'll be using iChromy for the immediate future.

Weird. I'm still using icab daily and have not noticed this. Maybe it's just the sites I visit. Gaf, nytimes, tech blogs mostly. Everything seems the same as before the latest icab update and before iOS 4.3.

GAF chugged for me. Even typing out posts, you can feel keyboard lag.

I'm definitely not noticing ths as I type right now.

Oh wait... Web app site from ckohler or full site? I always just use the mobile site on the iPad.

Edit. Logged into the full site. Still typing with no lag. Loading up pages ok.

Oh damn. You're right. Oh well, not that it matters for me. I'm a Chrome user.

Yup, full site. Try it for a bit on iCab then move to Safari. Night and day, IMO.

Like I said, I posted the email I had with the dev. He basically said Apple made him remove an API and that's the reason for the poor performance. Shame as I love the stuff in iCab :(

OK, so i did some searching and found a thread on Macrumors about this and then tested some other, more image heavy sites myself.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1153162

yeah, there's definitely some hitching on engadget and other blog roll pages when scrolling quickly across the page. i do not get any hitching when scrolling slowly across story headlines.

but it doesn't seem to be a deal breaker for me and wouldn't make me switch back to safari. it is, for me, isolated only for quick scrolling on big image heavy pages and does not affect keyboard lag (it shouldn't really - that's a system thing) or scrolling on mobile gaf (even on big pages) or page loading.

my experience closely matches this video for scrolling performance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KqfY2fra_o&feature=youtu.be

If you were having keyboard lag and general performance problems aside from scrolling in icab, it may have been some isolated issue - like a "running out of memory" scenario (i had occasional keyboard lag much more often on ipad 1 and the iphone 3GS, for example, regardless of the open app). you may want to reinstall it and give it another shot, imo.

I know this isn't the gaming thread, but people should really check out Sword and Sworcery. It's amazing!

I disagree. I found it to be incredibly boring and highly overrated. But, then again, I'm not into artsy fartsy games.

I just put the Speck matte screen cover on my iPad 2 today. It feels really class and I was surprised I was able to get all the bubbles out of the main screen. You can hardly see finger smudges and it really does a great job in the anti-glare dept.

I thought it was my just my iPhone but yes Icab has been lagging a bit on gaf for about a month. I'll try safari again.

Edit: much smoother on safari:(

I'm thinking of getting an ipad, I want internet access anywhere. Do I have to get a plan with AT&T to have this?
Or Verizon. It's whatever your preference but more people get the AT&T one in the states considering it's unlocked for international use.

And iChromy is pretty nice so far. Much quicker than iCab.

Fuuuuuck iTunes!!!

Ever time I connect my iPad, iTunes freezes up and I have to crtl+shift+esc and kill it.

Whhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy111111?!!!?!111!!?!

Have you tried waiting a while?

My iTunes freezes a lot too (not iPad related), and if I leave it a while it seems to sort itself out. One time it took 10 minutes before it decided it wanted to work.

Yes, Fuck iTunes!

Anyone else read manga here? I bought Magna Storm. The reviews were good so I figured why not. Has a good selection of titles. Wanted to see what others thought.

So, the rumor about iOS getting a new notifications standard is pretty much in the bag according to a buddy of mine who's always been a good source for software info. Only question in my mind is whether they show it of at WWDC or not. Personally, I can't see why they wouldn't.

How common is iWork on college campuses these days? I know macbooks are quite popular, amongst both teachers and students, but are assignments accepted in the .pages format or do they still have to be exported as .doc?

Not common. I submit assignments as PDF since it's virtually a clone copy that can't be altered and includes whatever fonts you used.

My college had iWork in every lab across campus

So after a lot of consideration I am gonna get an ipad 2. Probably a white one. I'll go check later this evening if there is any way to combine my iphone 4 3G plan with it or something, and if they don't offer that I'll just go with the wifi one.

I may also get one of those fancy smart covers, in pink or baby blue or something like that (ain't I corny?).

So I have one question. I really don't plan to jailbreak the thing. I don't jailbreak my iPhone because even though you can do shitloads of customization and whatnot, I really like the way iOS works and for a phone I'd rather have a closed system.

With the ipad, however, I plan to watch movies on the go and here comes the big question: how good is the codec support and overall hassle with the built-in apps? Because if I must transcode, I will transcode but I'm more interested in ease-of-use rather than going through many hoops.

Ripping my own movies is no big deal, though. As long as I don't have to fiddle with settings for hours on end.

So, any of you guys can give me some starter's advice?

Thanks in advance!

I personally use XBMC on my jailbroken iPad 1 and it supports pretty much every codec up to 720p mkv's fairly sure no AppStore app can do 720p mkv on iPad 1. However apparently GoodPlayer on the AppStore supports up to 720p mkv's on the iPad 2. Should have no issues with divx/xvid either. Can transfer video files using iTunes. There are a couple of other players too so I think pretty much every codec is covered. Can also use AirVideo to transcode on the fly instead of transfering to the iPad.

I really would recommend jailbreaking whenever the iPad 2 is jailbroken. XBMC is an amazing piece of software. I'd personally jailbreak just for it.

Cool, thanks for the info.

Browsing this thread backwards I found a link to this

http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

Which apparently is a great piece of software to convert videos to h264 and saving on battery life and whatnot, since the decoding is made on a hardware level.

Many options, I like it.

If anyone's struggling to find an Incipio Smart Feather cover, I recommend the Nuu BaseCase. Mine arrived today, and it's perfect. It doesn't have the lip that surrounds the Smart Cover hinge, so it's less 'secure' than the Incipio I suppose, but I prefer it that way. The Smart Cover is designed to be removed in a flash, and the Nuu allows you to do that.

It has a small cutout for the Smart Cover hinge, and it doesn't obstruct it from working in the 'typing' and 'photoframe' positions.

It's semi transparent, just enough to read the text on the back of the device. It is sturdy plastic, but has a very nice rubber finish. Immediately better to hold than the bare aluminium. I bought the 'white' one for my white iPad, and it is pretty seamless. You can barely see there is a cover attached at all from the front, as the parts that clip onto the frame are transparent too.

The only criticism I can think of is that the 'Nuu' logo on the back is a tad ugly. It's been done in a silver print, and as such looks slightly cheap. Would be nicer if it had been embossed.

Found it on amazon for £20, which is a bit steep for a piece of plastic, but it's competitive with the others.

Just got an iPad 2 16GB Black. Do they come charged or do you need to charge the battery before using it?

I can't remember what kind of charge the battery had when I first got it, but you don't need to "calibrate" it or anything. Use it, charge it, whatever.

There should be some battery charge in it. Don't remember if it's 100%, though.

After using the Speck matte shield for a couple days, it made me wonder if they're ever going to release stock matte iPads in the future. I'd definitely pounce on one if they did.

Mine arrived charged. I plugged it to my iMac anyway to set it up but yeah it seems most Apple products come charged (my Day 0 iPhone did anyway).

Read some posts about iCab and although it seems it's being a pain lately, I just bought it, because I when I browse GAF I open like several threads worth reading and the whole "Open in new window" option is such a tiny yet large nuisance to me.

Is there a reliable way to convert PDF or Kindle files into iBook mobi files?

What are some good cases? I was looking at the smart covers but I'd prefer something close to the Apple case for the original iPad.

calibre will convert any document files into iBook files, but depending on the DRM situation you'll also need the calibre DRM-stripping plugins. You can find both the application and the plugins in the Kindle thread :)
