Are there any more traditional third party covers that take advantage of the magnets? I picked up an ipad 2 for my father and knowing him the official cover isn't going to be enough.

I didn't see any at the Apple store last night. I'd give it a couple weeks and you'll have a lot to choose from.

i can't have it until march 25th =(
I'm exactly on the same boat =(

Flying on the 25th to NYC, and then the first thing I'll do when I get there is hunt for my iPad.

I'm not saying iOS doesn't have good games. I'm talking about the totality of experiences on the DS/PSP are deeper and different than iOS. A lot of you sound like Wii gamers using The Conduit to show that it can match the other platforms. You'll find gems on every platform, but would you seriously suggest an iOS device for someone who likes to play games like Dragon Quest, Mario, God of War, etc etc?

iOS excels at games that use the device and do not try to mimic other platforms. The board game adaptions are fantastic. Adventure games are a lot more fun with touch controls than buttons, to me. The experiences are different. I was replying to Whitta with snark.

I wouldn't suggest any iOS device for someone who only wants to play games as you can get a much cheaper device if all you want to do is play games, but there are many good games that fit the molds of those game you mentioned.

For JRPGS I would recommend to someone check out Chaos Rings, it's a great iOS only game. For Mario there are tons of great platformers, and for God of War there are, again, a ton of clones of it that are very good.

Anyways, I think the point I'm trying to make is that if someone decides to play games on iOS it's not just lol, waggle or lol, swipe anymore, the games are only getting better and companies will, if they aren't already, be developing on iOS as their primary platform sooner than later.

Edit:

I haven't played console games in years, and even hand helds have fallen off the radar for me. iOS is my primary gaming platform now and has been for the pas couple years. Mostly it's about time and want. And I still have loads of games I haven't started. On the single platform alone I have a huge backlogue.

I've been buying handhelds since the original Game Boy, I own a PSP and DS but I doubt I will ever buy another one. I don't like carrying multiple devices and there are more than enough of the kinds of games I love on iOS to keep me happy from now on.

I sold my DS and PSP. iOS has me covered for portable gaming.

The 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld ever I won't be purchasing. The NGP is interesting, but if I get one of those it's to replace my consoles.

In the words of Danny Glover, "I'm getting too old for this shit".

Yup. You can get it plain. I already pre-ordered one. I have a Grove case for my iPhone and lurve it so much.

I don't like it when people demean the handhelds. There isn't the need to. Both offer content and there is enough diversity in the content offer between the platforms and within the platforms. I would love for the iOS to offer me better and more content because I really don't like having to carry in my bag my Nintendo DS, iPhone, and now the iPad. If I could have have everything regulated to the iPhone and iPad, I'd love it.

Speaking of which, one thing I absolutely hate about iOS are developers like EA that want me to pay twice for the same flippin' app! I want to play Risk on the iPad? I have to rebuy it to get the HD version when I already bought it on the iPhone. Drives me nuts that I had to do the same with Angry Birds. I'm more willing to buy more of your games if you're not trying to gouge me of every penny you can. Release your app to be compatible with both the iPhone and iPad. I think I am only going to start supporting developers who do that.

EDIT: Until a game of the quality of say Dragon Quest IV, V, VI or IX are on the iOS and in great enough numbers, I'll always need the other platforms. Well, when it comes to some games I'm going to buy whatever platform they turn up on (as in Dragon Quest). But, my main game use for iOS have been the board games. I moved to Milwaukee and I don't have any friends here so finding people to play Carcassonne isn't possible. The iOs version is rad and I hope more of them end up on iOS. I want my iOS version of War of the Ring. Get on it Fantasy Flight!!!

I agree on both of these points, dedicated gaming handhelds are still pretty great even if I don't use them anymore and I absolutely hate it when companies don't make universal apps and instead force me to pay double. The exception to that is when it really is a well done port that takes advantage of the iPad more than "Hey, here's the same iPhone game you already paid for but now it's "HD""

Edit:

As for that groove case, I just pre-ordered one, will I be able to pick a plain cover later or did I mess something up? - Never mind, figured it out.

Apple will do 3D if and when they can deliver Retina Display resolution independently to each eye without a need for glasses, viewable with the screen at portrait OR landscape, and with Apple's traditional sense of polish.

That's a long fucking way away.

It'll be very amusing to read the comments when Apple opens up the AppleTV for games.

Don't get the black leather smart cover, unless you never intend to remove it from your iPad. Get a cover with easily recognized front and back sides.

Even then, I don't think 3d makes sense for an iOS device.

Went to Target and an Apple Store and they were cleared the fuck out. I already knew they didn't know when they would be getting more. Also called two other Best Buy's and a Target and they didn't have it.

But, I just put down $100 on an iPad 2 Pre-Order for Best Buy! My first tablet, I'm excited.

They'll call me when they get it in, but they said that they call in the order of who pre-ordered first. I asked the dude who was working with me and he said that only 12 people were ahead of me in the pre-ordering. Best of all, those people wanted versions of the iPad I didn't want, only one person pre-ordered the same thing as me: A 16GB Wifi, Black.

I checked out the White and I didn't really like the tint on it. Something that made it seem "off-white" and not "pure white." I prefer the black, that's classic.

I'm thinking about whether or not I should get a smart cover. Also making a list of apps.

What? Front and back of the smart cover confuses you?

I think Charred's talking about how the front and back of the black Smart Cover are essentially identical in color. The microfiber cloth on the interior is black.

So I got back form the apple store in Aventura Mall and they are sold out of iPad 2. I returned mine to Best Buy cause the light leaks on it were just too much and I guessed it was better if I purchased the next one at an Apple Store. Oh well least I got a red leather smart case to keep me company ; ;

Ok, I called another Verizon store and they said again that there is a $35 fee. But then called the main 800 number and was screaming at him and found out that they originally had the $35 dollar fee in place but Apple won't allow them to charge it and force them to do it pre-paid instead. No activation charge. They said the confusion was because they didn't hear back from Apple until 2pm yesterday and that's why it wasn't clear. Thank you Apple for not letting Verizon take advantage of people. I love when big companies bully other big companies.

My wife picked up a cream leather cover at Best Buy for me today. They didn't have anything dark. Not impressed with it and will be returning it when 3rd party guys like InCase get their act together.

That's true of all the leather covers, same color front and back.

Got the last 32gig wifi that best buy in memorial city in Houston had. My gf was nice enough to wait in line for me, she was about 50th or so.They had 70 total they had no 32gig 3G's which some got mad about. Its white and it's looks better than the pictures show. My only problem is that there are two areas on the screen that show light areas when it's displaying black or dark colors, only on the edges though. Don't if I'll exchange it or not. But other than that I love this thing, posting from it now.

For next time, Apple Store will exchange your Best Buy defective purchases for non-defective products. It's part of AppleCare.

Does anyone know if the material for the non-leather smart cases is similar to the material that the old Apple cases used?

oh, and when I predicted it would be called the iPad 2, and a few guys told me there would be no 2 in the title:

NYEH-NYEH-NYEH-NYEEEEEEH NYEH

The weird thing is, it says iPad 2 on Apple's front page but everywhere else - on the Apple store site, on the box, on the device itself - it's just iPad.

Much like the iPhone 4 on-case branding. It's a little odd.

Ha ha, OK. I'll give you that one. :) I thought it was gonna be iPod-like branding where there are no numbers used from year to year. but it does seem like they're tossing that number around almost everywhere.

let's see if they keep numbers for next year and do something else. (not taking any bets, tho)

Maybe they'll keep the iPad 2 at $399 and have the iPad 3 at other prices. At that point you will need number differentiators.

So does every iPad 2 have the backlight bleeding?

The same thing happened with the iPhone 4. The speculation is that the glue/epoxy hasn't finished drying, but once it does it'll be perfect. A "hot off the presses" kind of thing.

Definitely not. Mine is perfect. Sucks for the people with the issue, but you can get it replaced once they have stock.

This is different. That was a yellowish tint on white screens, this is light leakage on dark screens.

Yes the iPad 2 is faster and thinner, but overall I'm having a large case of buyers remorse. I love the thing, but I easily could have been happy with my first gen for another year...I don't think apple did enough. Zero wow factor for me. I'll get over it soon enough I suppose.

That is exactly why I am calming down on getting mine come the Euro release - even though I was 100% set to do it a while ago. I am still not 100% decided though. Right now, I am on an iPhone 3G, so I will probably get an iPhone 5 later this year. That will be a huge upgrade, and I am more excited about that

...I have a few more days to decide about iPad anyway. I still use my iPad each and every day, and love doing so. I would hate to feel buyers remorse every time I pick up the product if I got the new one.

Tobor, so what exactly is causing the difference? iPhone on light areas, iPad on dark ones .. Do you know?

Are there any free or cheap VNC clients for iPad that let you actually drag the mouse? All the ones I see for free move the viewport when you drag your finger. Even if I zoom out. I can't drag at all on the computer. The nicest I saw was Connect My Mac by Hana Mobile as well as the craptastic Mocha VNC. I want something that will zoom the screen all out then let me use the finger exactly like a mouse.

Also, what does the full Friendly have that the free one doesn't?

Try Remoter, .99 cent VNC app. Extremely easy to use.

The yellowing on white screens is caused by glue that hasn't dried, like was said, but that will go away as the glue dries. The iPhones all cleared up rather quickly, and any iPads with that problem should clear up as well.

The light leakage is probably a batch of iPads with a defect. If I had that issue with mine, I would just take it back and get it replaced.

Hey gaf lovin my iPad. Just wondering if there are any fun 2player games to play with my gf? I got checkers and a few others.

I have used the ipad2 for 24hrs without noticing the bleeding but I bet I'll find it if I go look for it lol

Sure enough, I can see a little bleeding in one corner. It's only noticeable if you're watching a movie with borders. I hate the internet lol

It's like antenna-gate for the iPhone 4, I didn't realize that my phone had a problem until people told me to start covering the bottom left corner of the phone.

Monopoly, Risk, Carcassone and Fruit Ninja are some good ones.
