Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Downtown SF had a line that wrapped 3/4 around the block! Asked an Apple guy before I started in line and he said that only 1/16 of the people would actually score one so if you're not there camping out at like 4am, don't expect to get one.

If a web app is run from the iOS 4.3 home screen - in other words, if it is saved to the screen alongside local apps downloaded from the Apple App Store - it runs roughly two to two and a half times slower than it does in the browser, according to various tests. It appears that whereas Apple has updated the iOS 4.3 Safari browser with its high-speed Nitro JavaScript engine, Nitro is not used when web apps are launched from the home screen.

"Essentially, there are two different JavaScript engines," says Alex Kessinger, a mobile application developer and blogger who has focused on building web-standards-based apps for the iPhone. "They're not using the new JavaScript engine with applications that launch from the home screen."

This is really weird. Why would Apple do this? So if you make a book mark for NeoGAF on your homescreen, it will run much slower than if you open Safari and choose a NeoGAF bookmark??

and it sounds like Apple is doing this on purpose to discourage the use of web apps.

UWS Apple store had a pretty long line but I was able to get one. It's amazing how many people behind me stayed in line when the Apple clerk specifically said "We don't not have enough to serve you guys." They were still waiting when I left when I KNOW they only had a handful left.

Regardless, ipad2 in my hand!

Wow cannot believe the lines are still that long. Apple competitors must be fuming mad.

Maybe those people are hoping someone's card might be declined or do not have enough money to pay. Wonder how long these lines will last and if the international launch will be delayed due to the stock.

Out of curiosity, did they have the full range of models available?

It's a bug. Chronic explained it earlier.

What about:
In addition, web apps saved to the home screen are unable to take advantage of HTML5 web caching capabilities, preventing them from running while offline.
Apple has reportedly acknowledged, however, that at least some of the issues, including ones related to the use of lower-quality synchronous mode rendering for home screen web apps as opposed to asynchronous mode used for content loaded directly in Safari, are not scheduled to be addressed by the company.

Was it worse trying to get a hold of an iPhone 4 post-launch or trying to get a hold of an iPad 2 now?

Comparable?

The day after the iPhone 4 launch I walked up to the Apple Store, had to wait in a 20 minute line and get mine.

I was pretty sure it was working before then. So, em, why wasn't this fixed already? I only use 3 web apps semi regularly, and always while connected to the internet, so it doesn't really affect me. just curious...
Yeah it did work before 4.2.1 so I'm not sure what's the hold up.

that's pretty much the exact same js delta when running a third party browser vs. Safari. iCab had the same result as the webapp

something's wonky with the Nitro engine implementation.

edit: giga's post is great. info straight from the dev.

No, the bookmarklet for Neogaf just opens up a page in Safari. This is for web-apps that are made to work in a specific web-app mode, and open in their own instance like an app.

as you can see...I am clearly not. :)

good cause that guy sucks except for that hbo show he made and that one comic he released on vertigo was also pretty relatable. i haven't read anything else he did.

Yeah, as far as I know. The line was pretty long, and lots of folks were buying 2, the Apple employee told me (big surprise - buy one, sell one). I think I was number #130.

How about if he sets up a VPN at home and connects to it from work?
I bet that would work. You have to jump through a lot of hoops for the app, but you can get HD channels even if you're not on a HD package.

1. Time Warner Cable subscriber (any package)
2. Time Warner Internet subscriber
3. Register a Time Warner online account
4. Your iPad must be using Time Warner internet.

I guess that prevents say, a guy with an iPad from asking his neighbor/friend for his Time Warner login/password, since it still wouldn't work unless the guy also has Time Warner Internet.

I always wonder how Netflix/Hulu Plus makes sure people aren't sharing accounts...

Honestly, I think they just wanted to get it on sale ASAP without sufficient stocks. I think they felt just enough pressure that they wanted to say it's on sale next week instead of next month.
I don't think it would've been possible to have sufficient stocks, there's only so much that can be physically produced in a time frame.
badcrumble said:
For those who ordered online: apparently if you got your unit engraved, those are being produced and shipped from China (a very few of them are already getting delivered), whereas non-engraved units will ship from US stock that's being held until the 18th for some reason.
Where did you hear this? They're all made in China afaik (costs too much to build crap anywhere else).
badcrumble said:
My order is in at 12:58, but it hasn't shipped yet since it's (a) 64GB and (b) non-engraved; those factors slow it down considerably, it seems.
Mine was also 12:58 and it's on the delivery truck today (west coast, which may matter). And it came from China.

Huh? Are you sure? Doesn't sound like it from that article.

My gf has Time Warner Cable. I have Time Warner Internet. With the magic of technology, I can watch TW Cable from my iPad 2 mirroring to my TV. It's not quite full-screen, but it's damn good for free. Now if only I could get ESPN on my Xbox, I'd be really happy.

There's a difference between a bookmark and a "web-app" on the iOS home screen. They behave functionally different. Ckohler's mobile neogaf app is just a bookmark.

thanks whoever recommended splash top, but it doesnt work. I need how logmein works where i log into my account and can see any computer i need to access including my work computers. you have to port forward and a whole bunch of other crap with splashtop.

The whole point of face time is that it's less like an online chat and more like a phone.

I have it on my mac, and people can call me when no app is open, it just starts ringing.

I get that and I guess that would work fine if facetime didn't just pull every contact I have from my adress book. At least 8 out of 10 people in my adress book don't have iPhone 4s and don't even get me started on how many email addresses I have in there. Right now it's impossible to know who has a facetime compatible device and if they do it's also just as hard to figure out what email address is associated with it.

You could go buy a couple and flip them on ebay. Easy $150/profit for each one.
I went to a Target at launch and was the 3rd person in line. In front of me were 2 Target employees and they were buying 2 iPads each at $100 off with employee discount (these were 64Gig/3G). The target only got 10 in. They were all giddy about how much money they will make on eBay selling these. I ended up leaving the line and going to Walmart to buy one there.

I'm a manager at another big box retailer. Thats a terminable offense at my company. Should have told mgmt and fucked up their day.

People buying iPads and selling them on ebay are bad enough, but that is a whole different level of sleazy. I hope karma bites them in the ass and they get shafted buying something they actually want.

Have you tried TeamViewer? The interface isn't as nice as Splashtop, but getting it up and running (especially across WAN) was much easier for me.

Edit: The paid version is really steep, and the free version leaves a small notification window open on the PC you connected to when you're done. Fair warning.

The first day or so yeah but not anymore.

I got a 64GB for only a $63 premium over retail+tax.

And then from that $63 he's got to pay eBay, Paypal, and overnight shipping costs.

Prices have mostly settled down on eBay.

Sadly i'm stuck with optimum online and cannot change to TW.

Oh god how much i hate optimum.

I was also surprised how good the ipad picks up sound with face time. I was across the other side of the living room and my friend told me he couldn't tell the difference in sound.

On ebay, I agree. On craigstlist, different story. I put up my 64 gig wifi up for $1000 to test the market this morning, and I received an offer to buy within minutes of posting. I'm not selling, but the demand is still there... if you can avoid the ebay/paypal fees, that helps!

Damn I realize ESPN isn't listed, freaking baloney! also all the local channels should be included.

Just got off the phone with Target and they have an OG ipad 16gb with 3g for 529.99. If i am mainly going to be using it for a web browser and streaming data from my desktop should I jump in? Or would the difference in browsing with the ipad2 be worth the wait and difficulty to acquire one? The plan would be to get the OG now and then ipad 3 when it comes out. I don't really care that much about gaming on it.

This is exactly what I did (only got the wifi, my phone can wirelessly tether with 4g to my iPad so I basically have mobile 4g everywhere I go) and I love it. I'll be upgrading to the iPad 3 when it comes out a year from now. For now, the iPad 1 is doing wonders. Make sure you get Air Video too.

Any hotspot tests and results with the iPhone 4 up?

Want to know how much battery actually gets drained when using your iPhone 4 as a hotspot...really my deciding factor if I get a 3G or not.

Right now, leaning towards black 64 GB WiFi.

Did anyone get the iPad 2 dock? I was considering it b/c I have the iPhone dock but it seems kinda pointless especially if you have the smart cover as well.

Got an iPad 2 64GB/Wi-Fi and iPod Touch 64GB with the HDMI adaptor and a MacBook Air for my girlfriend (her first Mac). Done buying Apple stuff for a while, lol.

Put my name on a reserve list at Best Buy for another 64GB ipad in case I want to return mine because of light leakage. I was told that my BB here got 250 units on 3/11. Far more than I would have thought.

Apple will replace it with a better unit at the Apple Store as part of AppleCare.
