Will BestBuy exchange stuff after 14 days though? Or can I do this via Apple?
I don't know about Best Buy, but you have 1 year of AppleCare that will let you exchange it for a good one at the Apple Store, regardless of where you bought it.

how do people feel about the smart cover so far??

im in australia and ipad2 hasn't released yet... wondering if i should get one... it seems like u kind of need it if u want to put it to sleep with the cover as most third party covers dont

but to be honest just looking at it, it seems anything BUT smart, no portrait view keyboard prop, when you fold it into the triangle its the inside part collecting dirt and grit before u put it back over the glass, doesn't cover the back etc. etc.

Not really. It's the first time I've done something like this, and to be honest I'm enjoying the experience. It might not be your cup of tea, but it's far from being sad. Lighten up.

UK UPDATE:

An Apple reseller has said that it is going to be a 5PM launch.

Apparently all models are going to sell for £20 less than the original pricing. People are reporting this when you put a pre-order in at HMV. Don't know if it's specifically for there or if it will be everywhere at that price.

Would they even have stock right now though? And I'd feel like a huge jackass if the new one had it worse. Mine is quite minimal and only noticable on dark borders

you should get about 6 months use out of it first then exchange for a new one.

How hard is it to find these in Apple Stores? I'm thinking of asking a friend who is in the US right now to try and get me one.

Probably pretty hard unless your friend is willing to get there super early and camp out.

$500 Is what I want to spend on an ipad. 3G I would use, but not the camera. Would it really be dumb of me to pick up the 64gb 3g model that at&t has on sale instead of the a new WiFi 16gb model?

It depends on your needs. I think the spec bump is easily worth the difference. I've already noticed games that had issues on the regular iPad get cleared up without any changes by the devs. The load times and choppiness in Puzzle Quest 2, for example. If you're just using it for email and reading stuff, it won't be as noticeable.

And the smart cover absolutely rules. I couldn't go without it at this point. YMMV.

I'm leaning more towards just getting an iPad, rather than waiting for the 2. I can't seem to find one in the Nashville area at all. I've tried Target and Walmart. Best Buy has an automated message saying they're out, and I'm sure there is a line at the Apple store.

The only thing I really would like would be the camera for video chatting, but it's not too big of a deal.

my ipad's "light leakage" problem has almost gone..

the camera is utter crap. but the device itself is just so awesome! thin, light, well made, very zippy.

Plants vs Zombies HD being on sale has already been mentioned in the thread, but it should be noted that all PopCap games are on sale for the weekend and all proceeds go to the Red Cross for relief effort in Japan.

So if you have any interest in Bookworm or Peggle and don't have them yet, might want to jump on those too.

It would be dumb to do the opposite. 48GB extra, 3G and GPS for about the same price trumps the speed bump unless you're buying the iPad as a gaming device.

well. unless capacity and on-the-go internet are not going to be important to the user.

considering how much I use the iPad as a web browser, the 2X page loading speed increase and extra RAM is worth more than more capacity for media and apps.

plus you know the iPad 2 will get one more year of OS updates compared to the iPad 1. you just know it :)

I'd say the 3G is the decision point. The og iPad is a good deal at that price, but I have no desire to pay another monthly fee so I was never looking for 3G. So the speed bumps and new form factor will probably trump for me.

Though I'm not buying for a few months, so I probably won't have the choice at that point anyway lol.

Yes, but he doesn't have to stick with the iPad 1 for life. If the iPad 3 sports a retina display it will be a mandatory upgrade for ALL iPad users =P

For me, lots of storage is important. I like to have all my music and all my photos on the thing. I hate to micro manage that stuff (reason why I crave for a 64GB iPhone).

Of couse, the overall user experience on the iPad 2 is better, even if you're mainly just an "app user" (as opposed to gamer) and internet surfer on it. But it's not like the great experience on the iPad 1 that made the device "magical" turned to crap all of a sudden. It's like, huh, there are better, faster Macs, but I really don't need more than a low-end MBP 13" :)

Not saying the ipad 1 is trash. just that performance and form factor improvements may be more important to some people than capacity and 3G, price being equal.

the biggest problem is just tying to find an ipad 2 right now.

My local at&t store has the 32gb at $529, they are out of 16gb models. It seems the 64gb at $529 is online only. Its still heck of a deal for the 32gb. I won't use the 3g every month, but I travel a few times a year where I would want that functionality, plus GPS on that would help a ton on road trips. Its kinda hard on small screens when you're trying to explore a locale.

This is my view exactly as well. If you don't need all your media stored locally (use Plex/Air Video and iTunes Home Sharing!) and have a smartphone which can provide 3G/GPS, then you're better off going with an iPad 2 W-Fi only.

You have a WP7 smartphone, right? If you aren't going to use 3G that much, couldn't it suffice if needed?

With the amount of money you are going to be spending you aren't *that* far away from a 32gb wifi. Kind of a middle ground storage wise. Plus, better resale value down the line I would think.

Yeah, I'll see if I can get that online deal for the 64gb, the 32gb is not a big enough deal to skip out on this year's version.

The 3g would come in useful a few times a year, mostly for the GPS functionality. It would be nice to have that extra storage for the digital copy movies I have on iTunes. Plus I would use it as a photo frame at work. The tethering solutions aren't really ideal for the few times I would need it, plus it would be basically free with the online discount. We'll see, I can just as easily walk away, I'm not desperate for a tablet right now, but it would be nice to have if i can get a great bargain.

There is no monthly plan for the 3G. It's pay as you go.

I'd say the biggest reason to get 2 over it is for web browsing. Gaming is better and all (as long as the games don't have a stupid framerate cap) but the original is generally not too bad with it, particularly since devs have been making games with the original in mind. Browsing on the other hand is pretty much the worst thing on the device, and 2 is a massive improvement in that area. I wouldn't bother with the original if you plan to use it for browsing a lot.

Okay. Still, a lot can be done to improve that on the software side (except for image heavy webpages). Here's hoping that iOS 5 brings a new and improved Safari.

On other subject, the multitouch gestures really get in the way of some apps :( One of them being GarageBand (or any other screen mashing music app). Disabled the gestures and already miss them sorely.

Hard to think of what Apple can do to eventually fix this. Clearly they haven't abandoned the idea so here's also hoping that multitouch gestures will be a shining feature of iOS 5.

Heh, they did address image heavy pages in software in 4.3! Probably not completely but they did improve it massively. I'm hoping for WebKit2 by iOS 5, it's already in the Lion beta so it's at least getting ready for release on the Mac side.

...and yeah app interference was the main reason I thought it wouldn't be released. No clue how they're going to get around that or if they're just going to do it by blunt force.

Anyone buying an ipad 1 and don't have a case? Since i have my ipad 2 with the griffin case i am going to give away my official ipad 1 apple case. it is a bit used and I put an apple sticker on the front of it, but it's free. send me a message if interested.

I should add I can only mail it within the united states and Canada

Edit. Taken

Just installed iCarbons skin. The installation is fairly easy.

Was it easy to apply? Better than the invisible shield?

What's the retail situation looking like this weekend? Still lines?

I think they are getting little to no shipments..

My 3-4 week iPad case shipped a week early, I wonder if the same will apply to my iPad..

Why would you put a giant sticker on your iPad? Just enjoy the design of it! Who cares if it gets a few scratches..

I might try to pick up a red leather smart cover at the mall today, although I don't like my chances. Should have got one when I had the chance on launch day!

I bought the red smart cover originally and then returned it. It gets scratched up really easily and leaves marks. It might not bother most people, but it bothered me. Went for the black and it holds up much better.

I saw the black at Tested's offices this week, I didn't care for it. Too boring and businesslike, I like to have a splash of color!

Also got to see the white model for the first time and didn't feel strongly about it one way or the other. Looks slightly cheaper than the black model I think.

The pics around here and macrumors sold me on a red smart cover.

kinda kills me that I'll be spending 70 bucks on a flap with magnets but, damn, it looks nice. :(

Gary- What do you recommend to protect the back? My iPad 2 comes Monday and I ordered an invisible shield. Is that the best option? I already have smart cover for it.

BTW- Loved the iPad 2 discussion on Tested this week! Norm will come around.

I'm not putting anything on the back right now, I think that Invisible Shield stuff is bullshit.
