Most seem to be arriving earlier than the stated date.

So it's safe to say every single person who ever takes their iPad out of the house is here on GAF right now. Which means my dad is the fifth. I wonder which GAF user he is...

lol, right.
I also take my iPad out of the house all the time. I use it on campus (or rather, in classes) and since I have a wifi only version I bought an extended battery for my phone and use that to tether it wirelessly to the iPad all day.

Does anyone here have the Star Walk app? If so, how well does it work?

Very cool the play with. The 'sky view' or whatever features really work well. Loaded with info.

There's a new update out but I haven't had a chance yet to see what it does.

I will tell you guys this. I travel with an assload of technology every time I go somewhere. On this trip I forgot to take my iPad with me and even though I have my iPhone, Android phone, Macbook Pro , Lenovo and Playbook (I develop apps) - I am suffering without my iPad.

Why can't you use the Playbook?

What sort of witch craft...

So I had my brightness set to minimum and watched a 50 minute TV Show (Re-Watching Breaking Bad, so good!)... After I finished the show my iPad had 99% battery life still.

Is the iPad like many other electronic devices, in that it will show a strong battery until about half and then it drops like a rock?

I noticed 431 gave a decent battery life boost to my ipad2. Before I got 9 hours, now it's 11 hours with normal use. Its been on for 40 minutes now, and it's still at 99%

Have Facebook commented on why they haven't made a real iPad app yet? Surely it's long overdue.

they made one comment at a press event a while back that they're focusing on mobile (I suppose that means pocketable) apps and they don't consider the ipad to be mobile.

for them, the ipad is more like a regular laptop. use the webpage. /shrug

That's really odd. It seems like, for a company as prolific as Facebook, setting aside the resources to adapt the iPhone app to iPad would be relatively trivial.

Why wouldn't you use the webpage on the iPad?

I don't know. I haven't used facebook in months.

for the people who want an app: is it for UI considerations like bigger buttons for fingers or are there functional aspects of the website that just don't work on the ipad?

I like nice big finger sized links on touch devices. On the iPad there is definitely enough room to hit a regular link, don't get me wrong, it just doesn't feel optimal from a UI perspective.

Edit: I didn't see you ask that question. I answered it at the same time as you asked it. Spoooooooky.

My MBP is basically my programming device at the moment. That and torrents, I guess.

I hope you are downloading Linux distributions on that bad boy :P

I'm getting mine on monday and its so haaaaard to wait :( I bought like 100+ apps the last days to pass time.

You know Facebook... Can afford the technician to make a universals app. How much work would it even entail. Surely the Facebook app is already retina ready??

Is there any app that you can download on the ipad to use for torrenting?

Would that even be possible? Assuming Apple allowed the App.
I remember seeing a jailbreak app a while back that allowed torenting straight to iPad, but you can use the utorrent mobile access to download them from your iPad to PC.

Possible? yes. Would Apple allow the app? No and they've said as much to people who've submitted torrent apps before.

I hope that one slips through the cracks eventually... Or Apple comes to their senses and realizes there are legit reasons to use a torrent program.

Background notifications are the big reason why I like the iPhone Facebook app; unofficial iPad Facebook clients like Friendly don't have access to those. They're REALLY handy.

So I remember the Garageband app being announced in the iPad 2 conference, will the app work for the first iPad? It's probably a stupid question, but I just want to be sure.

Also, should I go for a refurbished first gen for $350 or is it worth it to pay the extra $150 for the iPad 2?

Why not use boxcar? You don't have to worry about notifications when choosing apps, then.

I use BoxCar. Its great, except thar it does not support ALL the popular FaceBook apps. Friendly sucks ass. I use the superior Friended, but Boxcar doesn't support opening it.

By other than that, BC is great with the Growl plugin. I have it set to send me notifications when Transmission adds and finishes torrents. I'm looking for other Growl uses for it too.

anyone know a way to get software that is only released in certain regions?

I want to play bwin poker on my ipad but it isn't in the Dutch appstore. It's only for UK and Austria.

Anyway around this? The app itself is free, I can't have to trick my way by the stupid apple regulations. I think setting up a new account doesn't work because you need a creditcard and the creditcard must match an address :/

Follow these steps, and it won't require a Credit Card:

Go to the bottom of the iTunes Store (on your computer), and find the flag of your country. Click on it. Find the country you want an account for. Click on it. Now, find the free app you want to download and attempt to download it. Now it will require you to setup a new iTunes account in this other country. When you come to the Payment Method screen, there will be an option for "None" when it asks for a credit card.

Pretty simple, but you have to sort of "trick" the Store into not asking for a credit card. The key is attempting to download something free.

Hope that helps.

it did, I'm about to be playing poker on my ipad :D

Found out last week that as part of my bonus my boss ordered me an iPad2. :D

I'm hoping it arrives before the end of the month, but I know 2-3 weeks is standard right now. Waiting sucks...

Yeah the closest you're going to get without jail breaking is using the iPad to control torrents on some other machine...which is fine by me since I imagine torrenting entirely on the iPad itself would be quite a battery killer, and for larger files I'd probably want them on my computer to begin with.

Assuming you've never had one before, might as well get the original for cheap first. If you ever feel like it should be faster or whatever the iPad 2 addresses, then you can just resell it (probably without much of a hit, if any) and put that towards an iPad 2.

Picked up a 32gb wifi for my wife today and she loves it. Going through the links in the beginning of the thread for handy apps and info. This thing is freaking cool. WEEEEEEEEEEE

Is there a way to add multiple payment methods to an Apple account?

Friendly really took a dive with their latest update. It completely broke the app for me, even after a re-install and reboot on my iPad. All I get is a black screen and a "Netpad" loading error upon launch.

Glancing at the App Store, this is happening to a LOT of people, resulting in a ton of one-star reviews. Friendly was the #1 app for Facebook, but this could literally knock it into obscurity given the broad range of competition for an unofficial facebook app.

How's Friended? I've been using the regular facebook mobile website, which isn't that bad actually.

I just wish, and I said it many times, that the Twitter developer would take over the FaceBook app andmake an iPad version that feels exactly like the AMAZING Twitter official app. The panels, the swiping, the removing and scrolling and opening of links in the Twitter app feels so fluid. FaceBook would be AMAZING if it had an app exactly like this.

I have tried most of the popular FaceBook apps. Friendly first, it was just a shitty wrapper for the Touch mobile site. MyPad which does have a Twitter-style look, but it just did not feel right. Friended, which is more panels and an ACTUAL FaceBook API instead of just wrapping the touch or mobile sites. It has pull to refresh and all kinds of stuff. I just wish it had some options to turn off some of the stuff I don't want. Like the photo feed and the chat box that I will NEVER EVER USE EVER and have disabled. I still don't know. I just want one that is exactly as polished as Twitter and not just a poorly done ripoff or a wrapper for a site.

Problem with BoxCar is I can't set it up to open Friended or open iCab to FaceBook.com. Instead it would open Friendly or Safari. The two apps I do not use. I can probably just email them. They might be open to suggestions for more apps.

friendly is pretty broken with the latest update. Don't update if you use, you'll end up getting a blackscreen and an error that says something about 'reference:NETPAD'

suck.

How does Friendly, Friended, MyPad+, Facepad+, Facely and Buddies compare?

Is Friendly the best one? (Even though its currently borked)

I heard good things about MyPad+ but it only supports landscape mode which kinda sucks.

Words With Friends needs a landscape mode. :(

Is there a decent way to upload images to a TinyPic like service from iPad?
