Apple iPad 2 |OT|

why can't it update automatically?

I have this cycle where I try and keep up to date with apps, but eventually fall behind. Then I just ignore the number of updates for ages, and eventually just use itunes to update everything (takes two trips as I need to switch accounts) and then do a big sync with my ipad.

But now they have auto download of purchased apps etc, why can't I just check 'keep my apps up to date' and leave it?

I absolutely hate that, because the app store is already such a shitty and slow app. I annoys me that I have to navigate back, every time I update an app. So yeah, when will Apple fix the app store?

absolutely agreed. Yes Tobor i do buy 5 things at once i dont go to the app store all that often but when i do and I want to buy shit, its annoying as fuck to be taken out of the store then I get to watch the app download, i dont actually get taken to the app...
Then have to go back and continue searching.

As usual tobor is wrong.

Oh my god new iBooks update is glorious. Night and full screen mode (hides the skeumorphism).

Night mode

New annotation tools and full screen mode:

iBooks 1.5 adds the following new features as well as some stability and performance improvements:

- Nighttime reading theme makes reading books in the dark easier on the eyes.
- Full-screen layout lets you focus on the words without distraction.
- iBooks now features an improved selection of fonts, including Athelas, Charter, Iowan, and Seravek.
- Beautiful new classic covers for public domain books.
- Support for pop-up footnotes, included in select iBookstore titles.
- A redesigned annotation palette makes it easier to choose a color for your highlighted text.

Really nice update. I like the new fonts (Using Athelas now) and the night theme as well as the fullscreen option. I mean I like the faux book look, but really, it's a gimmick and it wore off so it's nice to have more room for reading words. And the new interface for highlighting is really nice.

Question, if I get an iPad 2, would 16GB be enough if I'm probably just going to keep apps on the HDD and stream music and video?

Wow, night mode is one of those additions you don't realize you needed until you use it, so awesome.

As usual? Lol.

That iBooks update is awesome. That font will look great when I'm reading classics.

It's enough for me. I keep all the apps I actually use on the iPad and only select playlists using the "encode to AAC" option to shrink them down.

I'm looking for a really classy leather iPad 2 case. I want something that doesn't add a ton of bulk and fits snug on the iPad. Anyone?

*i also want to mention I'm not looking for a sleeve either. I would like one that opens up.

I didn't realize iBooks had "enhanced" children books on the store until today. Found a couple free books for my daughter and I must say they're pretty rad. Some books have a read-a-long feature with full colored illustrations and all. I was really impressed. Does Amazon offer something similar on Kindle because this is a potential game changer for children's books at least.

Ordered a 32GB iPad 2 this morning and it should arrive next week. Pretty excited but I am imagining my partner won't be impressed when I rock up one day after work with it under my arm :P

Yeah, it'll probably be enough. As long as you don't store music or movies, or play a lot of big games at the same time. I just delete stuff off my 16gb as I'm done with it.

As long as you don't download many big games and comics, you should be fine. I complained earlier about the lack of storage on my 16 GB iPad, but after getting over those iOS games, I don't have that problem anymore. It's enough to store some manga and stream my music and video. I still hope that Apple will make the 32 GB model the new entry version.

If you want to download many games and keep them on the HDD, then no, it's not enough. Nowhere near enough. I hit the 16 gig limit within the first weekend of getting it and have had to delete around 150 games so far. But it depends on how many apps you you plan to get.

Personally I'm gonna go for the biggest HDD available next time I upgrade.

64GB isn't enough for me anymore. I'm hoping they add a 128 GB option with the 3.

It's looking more and more likely. Intel and Micron just announced their 128Gb samples, which means viable small chips for 128GB arrays are ready to go. The only question is whether they can overcome price pressures and go to 32-64-128 as a lineup rule, really...

Headphones, keyboards...probably various other devices

Thanks.

Has anybody here used a bluetooth headset with the iPad 2 yet? Does it make video chatting easier? I'm thinking about getting one so my wife can Skype with her parents.

16GB seems to be fine for my family, for now. We have a good amount of apps, some games, and still have over 9GB left.

But when I get another iPad (probably the iPad 4 in a couple years), I'll definitely be getting at least 64GB

I think I'll skip the iPad 3 now as well, and stay with my iPad 1 until the fourth version in 2013, then I'll go for 64GB. It's gonna be tough.

I use one fairly regularly with both my iPad2 and iPhone 4. Well, more with the iPhone, but the same principle applies. It certainly makes it easier to be hands free but depending on the BT set you get, it can affect how good/bad your voice sounds compared to the iPad mic. I use mine maybe 95% for music/podcasts, though

depending on how awesome the A6 is, and whether devs are allowed to release ipad 3 games at ipad 1 resolution to get the most out of the GPU, I might just buy a cheap clearance ipad 2. My ipad 1 is getting a little clunky now and then, don't think I can wait until 2013 for an update

I have a 32 GB iPad 2, and if (when) I upadte to the iPad 3, I'm probably gonna get a 16 GB one.
There's plenty of games I have that I will never play (or never play again), that I don't delete because I'm just lazy.
If I needed more space to put some videos in for a trip, for example, I would have plenty of means to free space.

I would have bought iPad 3 instantly if I had a job, but I quit at the end of October, so I don't think I'm entitled to buy such a device being jobless. I gotta write some job applications tonight!

"A little clunky" is cute. Yesterday I had to use Splashtop, because my browser always crashed when I tried to load a site with many pictures.

Something like this?

Not sure about branding, i have Yoobao one (looks identical to the one in the link) and it's great. Was looking for something like official Apple case for ipad1 and this one is perfect.

I'm surprisingly liking reading on this iPad 2 a lot, but I'm sure it's due in part with how disappointed I was with the Kindle Touch, what a downgrade that was for me.

Your iPad is also your porn archive or do you use it for music production?

I keep tons of stuff on it(all non-porn). Movies, music, comics, games, documents, and I don't like deleting stuff to make room when I shouldn't have to. The iPad is my most heavily used computer, why wouldn't I want lots of storage?

I have 9.4 GB available right now.

Already asked in the gaming thread.. didn't realise there was an iPad 2 thread..

I'm thinking of getting an iPad 2 for Christmas.. (my Dad wants to pay half of it!) - thoughts?
Should I get one or wait for iPad 3?

I'm not going to be gaming on it ALL the time (I have a 3DS and PSP for that) - it's mainly for email/calendar/books etc. during my commute.

Thoughts/advice?

Thanks in advance guys.

General response here is to wait untill Feb/March. I'm doing the same too.

Buy now.

Always something new round the corner. No point sitting on your hands.

Get it now. It's always nice to get something cool for christmas. If the iPad 3 has a fancy Retina screen then you can maybe upgrade, and unless it comes with a fleshlight hole or something I can't imagine it getting much better than iPad2, it's a great device.

Came across Pulse recently, an app that gives you a nice RSS aggregate service and I really like it. Are there similar or better alternatives available? I also have Flipbook, but I'm not too fond about that one.

Then 128 won't be enough for you either in the long run.

Stop being a digital hoarder and clean up your damn room!

I would kill for an iPad before Xmas as I spend about a week away from my PC at family houses but I can't justify £400 on the iPad2 when I know that the next one is due out in 3 months and will probably be a big upgrade.

I know they re-sell well but it's still a fair amount to shell out, what I AM after is a second hand iPad1 which I will be able to use until I decide to get the 3 (probably April / May to make sure there are no issues) but it's hard to track down used 1st gen models, at least ones that are not stupidly overpriced (some people seem to think the 16gig 1st gen used is still worth £300).

I know this isn't the place, but I have to ask. Is there an official iPad/iPod touch/iPhone accessory thread? I'm looking for something specific.

Pulse is the best visual RSS reader. If you want something heavier on text but more industrial strength, a lot of folks here like Reeder.

By the time I fill up 128GB, 256 will be around the corner. :)

I do delete some stuff, by the way. That's how I have 9GBs available.

If you're trying to put everything on your iPad, you're probably using it wrong and should just use a laptop. Like an Air or other Ultrabook.
