Kill... Me...

The iPad Pro is a mess

...what is even happening here. Holy crap.

Anyway, the display on my iPhone 6 seems noticeably darker on iOS 10. Even turning the brightness all the way up, it seems dark. Particularly, there's less brightness coming from my wallpaper/background.

So why do I need to press the home button after using Touch ID to unlock my phone? That defeats a lot of that appeal for me.

Do you have the reduce white point option on?
They made the effects of that much more drastic.

I've tried it on and off.

Doesn't change anything for me.

Yeah I believe the setting's there but it's not functional.

Personally I love it because I have a 6S Plus with raise to wake and I was constantly unlocking my phone upon raise because of the way I generally hold the phone. Makes it easier for me to check notifications without unlocking the whole thing.

So, not sure what's going on. I *had* Reduce White Point on at some point in the past, but the option is missing from the settings in iOS 10. I can't find it anywhere (yet).
Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations

All the same for me.

But I hate it. I want it to unlock without pressing the button.

Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations

Thank you so much! They moved it from Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast >

So, it's also a slider now, not just a toggle. My slider defaulted to 80%, reducing it to 50% gets me a similar result to the previous versions "On" toggle.

iOS 10 control centre is ugly AND they've removed the ability to control sound playback? Why?

[edit] oh they've added a swipe right for no good reason

as others are saying.. it is actually nice once you understand why. control center was becoming way too cluttered, and most people were going to it for one of two specific reasons.. either to do something on control center OR to control music. splitting it up with a swipe (and retaining which one) gives a way less cluttered interface for what you do most. Most people I've seen dislike it at first (change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but then come around to it being better. you virtually never end up swiping while using what you use most.

I did submit feedback for the Bedtime portion of clock. I love being able to say "I'm going to bed now". But I want for a way to preemptively turn off the alarm for the day without turning it off completely. Preferably from the lock screen. They could even use that as an "Ok I'm awake" indicator for actually tracking your total sleep time. It's like they got the "I'm going to bed now" portion completely right, but then were like "meh, close enough" on the waking up portion.

Wasn't it always like that? When the screen is off, you need to press the button and keep your finger on it to unlock.

Although I guess when the screen is on, you need to just rest the finger on the button to unlock. Is that what has changed? But to get the screen on you usually have to press the button anyway.

All you had to do was put your finger on the touchpad sensor and just hold it there. With this new method you have to put your finger on the touchpad sensor and then click the button.

But you can raise to wake now.

Yes that keeps happening to my 6SE too, gave up last night. Are you in the UK? My iPad managed to update to the public beta.

i'm sure i'll get used to it. the new look for the control and notification centres absolutely is hideous though.

That's … irrelevant.

We don't want to have to physically push the Home button to unlock Touch ID.

Before, just resting a registered finger on the button would unlock the phone.

Raise to Wake just makes the screen illuminate as if one had pressed the Home or Lock button.

This does not bypass Touch ID, which is requiring a full button press to unlock the phone as opposed to the former, superior method of just making contact.

Re: Touch ID, because I think some people get confused by this.

If you unlock your phone typically by:

1) Pressing the home button to wake the screen.
2) Leaving your finger on the sensor until the phone automatically unlocks.

This still works as always. However, if you wake the screen with the lock button, then you have to click the home button to unlock the phone.

I usually use the first method, which was always faster anyway, and don't consider the change to the second method to be all that much of a problem.

I know, the guy I quoted was saying that it shouldn't matter because you have to press a button to turn the screen on anyway.

I'm not sure about 6S / iOS9, but on 6 / iOS9, this is only true when the screen is already illuminated (and you had to push the button to do that).

Although I can see how this is pretty dumb now in iOS10 that the screen can be illuminated by raising the phone and then you need to also press the button to unlock.

6S correct? 6 people may be confused because on 6 you always had to press a button to illuminate the screen first, then just leave your finger till unlock

It didn't matter how the screen was illuminated: by Home or Lock button or by notification or by Siri—resting the finger on Home would unlock it.

Having to press the button now no matter what is stupid.

I'm a little unclear on how face tagging works in this new iOS photos app. I had a bunch of faces tagged from Photos on my Mac, but it looks like these are TOTALLY separate

I'm not as actively upset but it's definitely a strange adjustment period for me.

The face tagging is way worse than Google photos. Also the notification banners are way too big. The pop up from an email pretty much blocks everything from view.

there are two aspects to face tagging: recognition and categorization.

the latter SHOULD carry across your entire iCloud Photo library. IIRC pics I already had tagged in Photos now show up on iOS as that individual person.

the former is DEVICE DEPENDENT. Apple stated this right out. They consider this identifiable information and do not want this stored in iCloud.

So.. you have pics of your SO in iCloud. Your iPad, Mac, and iPhone will all independently determine (based on facial, scene, etc recognition) which pics are the same people/scenes. On any device you acknowledge "yes, it is this person" thus grouping them. That GROUPING will now persist across all devices.

That make no sense for the Iphone 6 to not have this feature as well, sometimes Apple is too much with the "need to upgrade to have better" narrative...

it's the same as "Hey Siri" unplugged from power requiring the 6s/SE. It's (supposedly) not about arbitrarily making people upgrade but about battery and energy efficiencies in the A9 CPU allowing them to "listen" for these events 24/7 without seriously impacting battery life. The 6 and lower would (according to apple) have a noticeable impact on battery life. Of course you can attribute as much skepticism to that as you want, but that's the reason.

I believe it's because the M9 motion coprocessor lies inside the A9 chip on the S series/SE, while the M8 chip is separate from the A8 processor which means it's not always on/less efficient to keep always running to detect motion

Sure, the side effect of this is now that when I search for said SO, two results pop up. One is her of the photos I tagged in Photos on my Mac on 10.11, the other is photos of her that my iPhone on iOS10 had determined was her, along with any others I confirmed. So now her name pops up in searches with two totally different results showing different amount of pictures

ahhh.. ok, so when you go to those results on your phone, there should be an option at the top saying "Add Name" or something. Pull her from your contacts (the same contact you used on your Mac) and then a box should pop up asking if you want to merge and say yes. It should now be the same on both iOS 10 and macOS 10.11 SHOULD BE. Have not tested it yet except for how it shows on my phone (which has my daughter merged with the stuff I tagged her in ages ago on Mac)

I miss pulling down on a banner notification for a text and being able to quickly reply.

I wish they had kept that, but also added the new 3D Touch version that's more comprehensive.

But maybe the new way will just get faster as the OS matures, which is fine by me.

yes.

Nah, it never prompted me to merge stuff, I just get two totally different results now

Honestly I don't have an obscene amount of pictures, if I can find some way to scrap all face tagging in photos when I actually get a Mac again and start from scratch I'm totally willing to do that. But I feel like this is going to be a chore

Edit: Here's what I see. Top one is what was recognized by iOS10, bottom one is what I manually tagged on my Mac. No option to merge and as far as I know I used the same contact card for both

I can't figure out how to get into the Sierra Beta! I'm still stuck in El Capitan's Beta. The Redeem code doesn't work anymore because I redeemed it yesterday, App Store said it was downloading, but it didn't. Instead it started a secret download of the installer app (Saw it in LaunchPad) but got stuck on 0% downloaded. So I deleted it and tried to start over but they keep giving me the same unusable code and App Store still says no updates available.

Ugh. All I want is to try Sierra! I don't want to have to jump onto the Dev train to do it.

Love the opening/closing animations for apps/folders

I think I know why they changed the folder animation – some people were getting nauseous from it – but it loses the feeling of going in and out of 3D space. I think it looks rather boring now. My bigger complaint is that they've made the animation much slower than iOS 9.

yeah, that lack of "merge" is what sounds bugged.
