Apple releasing first Public Betas of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra today

Even Apple softies like John Gruber basically admit what I said at this point. The Watch wasn't built with "overhead" space, they merely optimized the OS to work with the sluggish hardware as Apple did with the original iPhone.

iOS 1.0 was limited in functionality, but it was a great OS because it was focused on doing a few things really well. watchOS 1.0 and 2.0 were unfocused, lacking a real vision and purpose for the product to exist. I still don't think they totally understand why the product exists and they seem to be trying to retcon a purpose as they got public feedback, but watchOS 3.0 is a hell of a lot better and much closer to what 1.0 should have been.

I'm not disagreeing that it was a little unfocused, just disagreeing that it was prematurely released.

I guess what you say is premature and unrefined, I just define as Apple releasing earlier in a product lifetime than they usually do nearly for the exact purpose of of being able to let the audience discover what place it holds for each user. It's a much more personal device by definition and apple are aware this is very different to their other personal electronics, even the phone. That's why they built in more personalisation than they usually do in both hardware and software.

They learnt what the device is to more people than less. The cynical would say it's "beta" testing a product and premature, but that is t how I see the Apple Watch. It seemed pretty purposeful to me.

That's … irrelevant.

We don't want to have to physically push the Home button to unlock Touch ID.

Before, just resting a registered finger on the button would unlock the phone.

Raise to Wake just makes the screen illuminate as if one had pressed the Home or Lock button.

This does not bypass Touch ID, which is requiring a full button press to unlock the phone as opposed to the former, superior method of just making contact.

Saw a video on 9to5 Mac about the resting your finger on TouchID option. Apparently it's made to address your issue, but isn't working properly in the beta yet.

I can't figure out how to get into the Sierra Beta! I'm still stuck in El Capitan's Beta. The Redeem code doesn't work anymore because I redeemed it yesterday, App Store said it was downloading, but it didn't. Instead it started a secret download of the installer app (Saw it in LaunchPad) but got stuck on 0% downloaded. So I deleted it and tried to start over but they keep giving me the same unusable code and App Store still says no updates available.

Ugh. All I want is to try Sierra! I don't want to have to jump onto the Dev train to do it.

Go to Purchases in the App Store.

That make no sense for the Iphone 6 to not have this feature as well, sometimes Apple is too much with the "need to upgrade to have better" narrative...

6 doesn't have the low power extra chip that operates Hey Siri and the always on Touch ID. It's a battery concern

ugh, the connect tab is a permanent fixture in the music app if you disable Apple Music.

The entire music app just feels slower overall on my 6 Plus.

I'm currently running Sierra on a 2013 15" MBPr/2015 15" MBPr (work) and iOS 10 on an iPhone 6S Plus and iPad mini 4.

I'm pretty happy with iOS 10 on the iPhone so far. It's a bit sluggish, but that's to be expected at this point. I haven't noticed too much of a difference with macOS.

Anyone else getting 'Failed to update software' after trying to download and install the iOS beta?

I had it on my iPad Pro with iOS 10 Dev Beta 1. I ended up having to do a restore to a fresh 9.3 and then do the update before restoring an iCloud backup.

...what is even happening here. Holy crap.

Anyway, the display on my iPhone 6 seems noticeably darker on iOS 10. Even turning the brightness all the way up, it seems dark. Particularly, there's less brightness coming from my wallpaper/background.

They have always dimmed the wallpaper in order to give better visibility to the icons depending on the color of the picture. I do think they made it a bit more dim though

Go to General>Accessibility>Display Accomodations

How do you downgrade Sierra? because now my Macbook is EXTREMELY hot, and won't wake up form sleep...

I have the occasional wake from sleep problem too. It wasn't in beta 1.

As for your MacBook running hot, open up Activity Monitor and see what it's doing. It's probably analyzing your photo library.

iOS10 PB isn't pleasant. Not that it's buffy or crashy but the visual and UI changes just don't seem for the better. Areas now have bad contrast (NC), things rake longer (triage notifications), things are so different muscle memory is no good (swipe to unlock).

I'm not really happy with the changes. However, I'll stick with it, submitted around a dozen bugs so far.

i can kind of understand why people are saying that the control centre got too cluttered, but there's now a huge button for night shift that seems to serve..........................no important purpose, given that it could have just been a small one.

Decided to give the iOS 10 Public Beta a whirl, though I think I'll probably hold off until the final release of macOS before updating that...much more to go wrong on my computer than on my iPhone.

My iPhone 5c is finally starting to feel a bit long in the tooth. The typing lag in Facebook was dreadful, though I haven't used the beta enough to know if that's an OS-wide thing or just Facebook being funky at the moment. Still sticking to my plan of using the 5c until it dies on me, though I may change my mind if I switch cell providers in the near future and decide to take advantage of the $500 savings on a new phone that most carriers will throw at me for signing a two-year contract.

Decided to treat myself to some new wallpaper for the first time in years to celebrate the occasion.

Now to look into what iOS 10 has actually changed and improved...

I wish I could permanently have the time right justified as it appears when you view the widgets screen.

Widgets are all busted at the moment, so that's a bummer.

Also all the messaging options seem overbloated. It'd be nice if you could turn off those individual features separately...how does my iPhone know my heartbeat, for instance?

I still can't get used to pressing the home button instead of swiping to unlock.

Anyway, iOS betas a much more stable than Android betas

Your home screen is Spaceship Earth :)

Anyone have an issue where after typing certain punctuation the keyboard doesn't go back to letters automatically? Just happened right now with that question mark, and right here with that comma. Makes what I'm typing total gibberish and I have to go back and redo it

Edit: 5)8/

Yep, that's what it looks like when I don't correct it

I really like that we finally have home screen widgets even though they frequently break on PB1. Having widgets to the left, my most used apps in the middle and all my other apps on the right is a fantastic 3 page setup.

Sierra's PIP is great. Less useful on the desktop as I have a second monitor but I've already used it a lot on my laptop.

I do have they keyboard correcting words that are spelled correctly. It just corrected "handle" to "handel" when I was texting someone just now.

Yeah, I think iOS 10 is going to prompt me to do a long-overdue reorganization of my apps.

No real issues with the iOS beta thus far. My ESPN widget is broken, minor freezing or slugginess occasionally and somewhat poor battery performance. Otherwise, it feels fairly stable.

Apple Music on iOS is now pretty good.

It's still awful on Sierra. Why are the Apple Music splash screens and pinwheels still a thing? Is it really too much to ask for some sort of background loading/refreshing and local caching? It's been a year and Apple Music on the Mac is still slow and unresponsive.

I put the beta on my iPad, because I rarely use it, and so far I like it. I really like the new iMessage app, and the notification screen.

The lock screen takes a bit to get used to, but its a nice change.

And what would be the gain from that button being small instead of big?

The music app in CarPlay is significantly worse for me. The Love option is now two taps and you can't even tell if you've loved a track already. I don't know if I'm a crazy outlier (I probably am), but I use the Love function to make note of songs I REALLY like in a playlist. Not every track is loved, just my favorites. While driving and skipping through songs, I could quickly glance down at the screen and see if it's a loved song or not. Now, there is no visual representation of that. I used to use the 5-star ratings religiously in iOS until they buried it behind taps and was really happy when the Love/heart system came into place. Now it seems to be getting buried again. It's just a nice way of organizing music for me.

Yes, I reported this to the feedback assistant already. Has anyone else found this issue to be frustrating as well?

Don't use CarPlay (thought I'm hoping to get a car with it later this year/early next) but Like behavior is the same on the iOS app, hidden behind a menu. I agree that it should be right on the Now Playing card, I reported it on feedback assistant as well.

Also, triaging/clearing individual notifications feels, for some reason, more sluggish than on iOS 9, even though the actions are the same (swipe then click on X/clear). Probably due to a slower animation, but anyways I'd like for a long-swipe to clear option to be added as well like you can find in many mail apps (I'm thinking of outlook specifically, though I think mail.app added this as well in iOS 9 or thereabouts)

Yes, it's doing it right now and pissing me off. If I space twice, then backspace it sometimes fixes it. Doesn't happen in texts, only Safari.

Safari and delay with actions after switching apps are the buggiest things I've encountered aside from my broken bank app.

So checking the Purchases tab indeed had the download in there. So I'm happy. I'm going to install it shortly once I back up everything.

Not sure when I want to switch to iOS 10 yet though. I kind of want to start fresh when I do. But I want to export my text messages. At least a couple specific threads. But I don't want to pay $40 for a utility to do it that I can't be guaranteed is going to work right or even continue to work when 10 or 11 comes out. I dunno.

I agree, the Loved indicator should be way more prominent. Now Playing card, the lock screen, the control center, CarPlay, everything. They seem to be backing off it and I don't know why

Current annoyance: in Safari, scrolling through a text box scrolls the whole page as well. Case in point, making long GAF posts!

Also I went ahead and reorganized all my folders and my home screen. My muscle memory is messing with me

Weirdest thing. I got Sierra running on my iMac first (Took forever. I'll install it on my MacBook later) and opened Safari to test out PIP (After rearranging my menubar icons. So awesome. Why did it take 16 years to finally allow third parties this ability out of the box?) and suddenly I lost audio completely. Couldn't even unmute it at all. Had to reboot and now it's working. So awesome. I'm going to get a lot of use out of PIP on my laptop. So often do I play a YouTube video in a split view with Safari, but then it's only attached to that one window. Now I'll be able to watch it while doing whatever the heck I want to do. So happy it finally came. Interesting you can resize it to up to a quarter of the screen size.

Thinking of turning on Documents and Desktop syncing but I need to buy some more iCloud space first. I have too much in my Documents. I'll have to do some rearranging of files. I wish I could enable each folder separately. And let me also sync all other folders like Photos, (Anything that's not the Library) Music and (Anything that's not my iTunes Library) Movies. (Anything not iMovie stuff) I'm just weary of it right now. If I turn it on each machine, will it merge the contents of my two machines? I don't want to accidentally lose anything. (That's why I have backups of course. I could also move the stuff out first then move it in once the option is turned on.)

Siri could be useful. Look forward to playing with it. I just wish it was designed to pause any playing video instead of muting the audio. (I'm pretty sure that's why my audio disappeared. Siri got stuck.)

Also, 16 years and we still only have blue and graphite. All I ask is a red, orange or dark yellow option. Maybe green. Purple. Come on. OS 6, 7, 8 and 9 all had more options than this! I want to theme my OS red!

Edit: Also, in the Finder if you use Icon view and have labels on the right, the icons now tile left to right on a row by row basis like "label on bottom" mode instead of on a top to bottom column by column basis. Also it seems they have more padding now too. So all my icon view folders are a bit wonky but I'll fix it in time. Actually I'd rather it have remained the old way. I'm so used to knowing where the folder is in the list. Now I have to retrain myself.

Carbon Copy Cloner doesn't work on Sierra yet. Well then. I guess I'll wait a little bit for them to fix it. They say they're working on it right now. Hopefully it's soon.
