Apple 'Special Event' on September 7th

I don't want any small capacty iPod cell phone that doesn't work with my cell phone provider.

I want an 80GB G5 removable battery video iPod!

The iTunes phone doesn't look all that special to me. Nothing I'd want to drop $200 on. But then again, I don't want to listen to music on my phone.

I'm squarely in the "The phone thing is cool, now show us the real iPod upgrade" camp. I'm not sure if it'll be the video model, but that does seem to be the next step for the iPod. Adding more capacity is more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Besides, a number of competitors already offer video playback on their mp3 players, I'm just interested in seeing Apple's take on that. I'm sure the Video iPod will be slickly designed, have a great interface, and a nice screen. But iTunes delivering content to it will make all the difference.

Engadget is reporting that a flash based mini will be revealed next week, as speculation has suggested. They say they'll have color screens, will be about 3/4 of their current size, and have a slightly smaller, but color, screen. Available in 4, 6, and 8 GB models, with pricing to remain about the same and the 8 GB model coming in at $299. For that price, I'd rather pay for the 20 GB iPod with a hard drive.

Edit: Oops! Thanks for the catch! ;)

If you have, or want an ipod, then the ipod phone isn't for you. Its for people that are aware of digital music players but aren't willing to pay lots for a big ipod.

If it was going to take significant market share from Apple it would never have gotten off the drawing board.

BTW, rumour is that O2 in Europe will be bringing it over here - possibly with over the air wireless access to iTunes. (although if that happens it'll cost you more in packet fees to download a song than it did to buy it)

The Engadget article says that it will have OTA access for iTunes here in the states as well, and songs will be $2 a pop. Guess we'll see next week.

I'm even more sure then that iTunes 5 with a mobile music store and aacPlus support is coming soon then. There's no way anyone would download the current 128kbps aac songs over a phone network, far too big. aacPlus could reduce that to as low as 24kbps (!) or more likely 48kbps which is still a big saving.

Apple have been rumoured to be supporting it for a while, it seems the perfect match for a mobile music store. Some info about aacPlus:

It seems crazy until you try it, but Mostly Classical proves that aacPlus can sound great at 24 kbps. At 48 kbps, it's almost as crisp as a CD. At 128 kbps, it can deliver 5.1 channel surround sound. AacPlus works by combining three technologies, each of which shrinks the size of an audio signal. The first is AAC, the Advanced Audio Coding technique that Apple licensed from Dolby for iTunes. AAC analyzes the sound and throws away any data it knows human ears won't be able to hear, which is a lot. Then, aacPlus adds Spectral Band Replication, which strips out all of the music's high frequencies and replaces them with a tiny bit of analytical data. AacPlus players reconstruct the highs as a mathematical function of what's left. As a final space-saving trick, aacPlus tracks are recorded in parametric stereo. Instead of a left and a right channel, one channel is the sum of the left and right signals (L+R), and the other is their difference (L-R). This takes up less bandwidth, and the player can easily flip the two channels back to the original left and right.

One thing I notice with that invite - it says "1000 songs in your pocket..."

Well, the pocket is empty in that photo, which seems to imply that the person is holding it in their hand. The only reason I can think that you'd hold an iPod in your hands is either your pockets are too small, or... you're watching a video.

I dunno. I'm most likely reading too much into it, but it's fun to speculate.

well, all of this news may just push me to buy an ipod now..

not really interested in the minis.. well, kind of interested but not really. not at all interested in the shuffle.

I am slightly curious about the size bump they are saying the regular line might get, but honestly 60GB is good enough for me at this point.

will think about it for a few days

also, do iPods EVER go on sale? never seen in yet. might have to use my sister-in-law to get a student discount.

Apple doesn't check the student stuff, they just go by the honor system. Just pick a school when you're ordering online and that's it. They really don't care. If the 5G models come out soon, and you don't need one, the best time to strike would be then. They always offer the previous-gen models for much cheaper in their clearance section and you can use the student discount.

Some online stores will sell them for a few bucks off or so everyone once in a while, but that's it. Outpost.com has the silver 6GB mini for $229 right now.

OH TEH NOES!

Jobs cancels Apple Expo Paris keynote >
Related entries: Misc. Gadgets

Alright Apple conspiracy theorists, now you’ve got something to chew on: Steve Jobs just cancelled his big keynote for this year’s Apple Expo in Paris. No official (or unofficial) word on what happened or why Stevie J. won’t be doing his “Just one more thing” thing for us in France, but could it be that they’re just going to make all their big announcements at the press event they have scheduled for this coming Wednesday? Or are they just not ready to announce all those new iPods they’re working on? Not sure, but we do know that instead of a formal keynote Apple will be holding a more informal press conference with Jobs and other company execs.

Since the conference is in about 12 hours I thought I'd share what Kevin Rose said in his blog this week.
Apple has sent out invitations to a "Special Music Event" to be held at 10:00AM in the Moscone Center West in San Fransisco on September 7th..

Why wait till Wed?

New Products:
- Cingular will announce an iTunes compatible phone - the "Rocker"
- New 2GB ipod called the "Nano" - it will sport a color screen and will be much smaller and thinner than a mini. Price = $199

No video ipod.. You heard it here first.

- New 2GB ipod called the "Nano" - it will sport a color screen and will be much smaller and thinner than a mini. Price = $199
Wow, sounds pointless. Hopefully it's not true.

Newest rumor.

Apple invited media to a special event to take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Moscone Center West in San Fransisco on September 7, 2005. The teaser invite featured a pair of denim jeans and the caption "1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again."

ThinkSecret reports that Apple's event will be devoted to the new iTunes-enabled Motorola phone that has been long discussed. The new phone is reportedly available in two capacities: 256MB and 512MB allowing users to store 70 and 130 songs respectively.

According to the rumor site, users will be able to buy songs over Cingular's network for approximately $2 a song. This contradicts previous comments by Steve Jobs.

Meanwhile, analysts reported that interest in an Apple-branded iTunes phone appears to generate a significant amount of interest based on a small 200-person survey.

ThinkSecret also notes updates to Apple's iPod mini are on the horizon. The new flash-only based design is reportedly 20-25% smaller and will likely be introduced at Apple Expo Paris. Sizes are reported to come in a 4GB, 6GB and 8GB sizes and sport a color screen with slightly higher resolution. Meanwhile the high end iPod shuffle is expected to be bumped up to 2GB ($129-$149) with the 512MB and 1GB iPod dropping in price respectively to $69 and $99.

Buzz about an entirely Flash-memory based iPod mini first appeared in late August amidst reports that Samsung had negotiated to become the primary Flash supplier for Apple.

Meanwhile, many were surprised of Apple's announcement that there will be no Keynote speech for the Apple Paris Expo which will kick off on September 20th.

I thought the flash chips from Samsung would play into this. I'll be disappointed if all they do is make a smaller, color Mini with'em though.

well, the good news is it sounds like more than jut the phone. the bad news is no 5g ipod :( hopefully we at least get itunes 5 and maybe a subscription service...

I think the world has enough freakin cell phones.

And this is coming from a person who likes Apple.

$2 songs and a capacity of 70 to 130 songs sounds like backwards progression to me.

But maybe thats just me. :/

a couple of things to remember. while it may not seem like that much capacity, remember that first and foremost this thing is a phone. for me to get that much capacity out of my phone I have to buy a 256MB or 512MB MMC and then I still only have a couple of average apps, certainly nothing as good as an ipod interface, by which to control the music. AND I have no stereo headphones that I know of. so basically this is a phone that has the addition of being able to hold 70-130 songs. also remember that most people will take their phone with them to workout. 70 songs is easily enough for any workout meaning one less device to have with you when you go.

I certainly wouldn't call this "Here we go again" but at the same time I would hardly call it regression.

$2 a song would only be if you download OTA - you pay more for the benefit of instant access, wherever you are. Plus I guess it has to pay for Cingular to take the damn thing.

You will still be able to sync with your home PC and iTunes - nobody is forcing you to pay $2, you are just getting more choice.

If they are downloading AAC+, I hope you can redownload (for free) the same song in AAC 128k on your PC when you get home.

I also hope they update iTunes to downsample your tracks to AAC+ for your phone.

Basically what you people are telling me is the new Nokia 5gig phone is better?

the whole idea of an ipod phone is stupid in my opinion. I have a cell phone to talk to people and in case of an emergency. Lets just say im listening to music on my ipod phone and the battery runs low or dies. The last thing I want is to be dependent on the same device for my pleasure and business/life. It just doesn't make sense.

my treo 650 disagrees with you :D

i would love for treo to integrate a HD ~ 5 gig and let you directly sinc it with itunes

By all means, I know a lot of people will take the risk, but I dont mind carrying around another 12 ounces to be safer.

me personally, I am never at a worry about losing power on my phone. however I have a 20 minute each way drive to work which my phone is charging during.. so it might be different for others.

Well I know we have seen the size of the phone, but what about the weight / battery life. Whenever you combine two devices like that which need lots of battery life, its gotta raise the weight.

For me, I've been hearing about an iTunes phone for over a year, so it's kind of old news. I'm not going to go out and buy a new phone so I can listen to music on it. However, I was prepared to buy an iPod if they brought something new out that offered new features and/or designs. I'm still interested in what they have to show, but if it's a phone, and an iPod "nano", I'm not all that excited.

in theory it won't. phones have had flash ram and msuci capable apps forever. about the biggest concern I see is giving reaosnable (10-12 hours) of listening time. Though I believe most of what drains a phone during talk time is the GSM/CDMA connection and modulation/demodulation. I imagine that just playing songs will give even current phones not too bad a battery usage.

We'll see though.

Games on cell phones.

Music on cell phones.

Pictures on cell phones.

We sure are creating a nice battery drain on phones now.

Hate to see what hapens when someone gets in a real emergency and finds their phone dead because they were playing music on it all day.

Or taking pictures.

Or playing games.

I have no interest in a video ipod. really. I went ahead and bought my ipod photo now because I am hoping that any non-video/music-related improvements they do make will make it back to my photo. if they have an 80GB version, that will be nice, and I'll upgrade to it when I run out of room on my 60GB.

also one small ipod tangent, went biking with my 60GB yesterday. 2 hours and there was some nasty terrain in there and not one skip.

but none of those drains a phone anywhere near actually talking on it does. as to the phone dying when someone really needs it, well, keep your phone charged. The same thing is able to happen now if you don't charge your phone usually every few days.

Apple Video iPod: A New Avenue for Consumer Content

Buzz has hit an all-time high for the much hyped Apple Video iPod that may be released next week. Several blogs like Gizmodo and Engadget have photoshopped their best guess what it may look like. Om Malik is more definitive: "Apple Will Do a Video iPod.” Apple’s big announcement is expected to make the announcement at a special event September 8th in San Francisco.

Sounds like speculation.

I hope it's the 80 GB iPod, I dont care if it's a video or not. I have a 4 gen 40 GB iPod, and I ran out of space about 6 GB's ago. 80 GB iPod = instant buy.

Probably, but don't bet on it right away. It took Apple over 6 months to give previous gen users the basic firmware upgrades that came with the 4G (shuffle songs on the main menu, etc).

I'm an idiot. I got all excited to come home and see what went down, but then realized that this was happening at 10 AM pacific..

more info, thoug not ipod related (itunes related)

Apple's iTunes Music Store did not roll-over today as it has historically done on Tuesdays, hinting that content announcements may be part of Wednesday's special media event. The store also failed to offer visitors an "iTunes New Music Tuesday" track and podcast.

As part of its content offerings on Wednesday, Apple is expected to announced that the iTunes Music Store will feature Madonna's new single "Hung Up" a full week before it's available in stores. The iTunes Music Store will also begin selling the pop singer's new album one day in advance of retail stores, complete with a special bonus track not shipping on retail CDs.
