I'm squarely in the "The phone thing is cool, now show us the real iPod upgrade" camp. I'm not sure if it'll be the video model, but that does seem to be the next step for the iPod. Adding more capacity is more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Besides, a number of competitors already offer video playback on their mp3 players, I'm just interested in seeing Apple's take on that. I'm sure the Video iPod will be slickly designed, have a great interface, and a nice screen. But iTunes delivering content to it will make all the difference.
It seems crazy until you try it, but Mostly Classical proves that aacPlus can sound great at 24 kbps. At 48 kbps, it's almost as crisp as a CD. At 128 kbps, it can deliver 5.1 channel surround sound. AacPlus works by combining three technologies, each of which shrinks the size of an audio signal. The first is AAC, the Advanced Audio Coding technique that Apple licensed from Dolby for iTunes. AAC analyzes the sound and throws away any data it knows human ears won't be able to hear, which is a lot. Then, aacPlus adds Spectral Band Replication, which strips out all of the music's high frequencies and replaces them with a tiny bit of analytical data. AacPlus players reconstruct the highs as a mathematical function of what's left. As a final space-saving trick, aacPlus tracks are recorded in parametric stereo. Instead of a left and a right channel, one channel is the sum of the left and right signals (L+R), and the other is their difference (L-R). This takes up less bandwidth, and the player can easily flip the two channels back to the original left and right.

Well, the pocket is empty in that photo, which seems to imply that the person is holding it in their hand. The only reason I can think that you'd hold an iPod in your hands is either your pockets are too small, or... you're watching a video.
I dunno. I'm most likely reading too much into it, but it's fun to speculate.

Apple doesn't check the student stuff, they just go by the honor system. Just pick a school when you're ordering online and that's it. They really don't care. If the 5G models come out soon, and you don't need one, the best time to strike would be then. They always offer the previous-gen models for much cheaper in their clearance section and you can use the student discount.borghe said:well, all of this news may just push me to buy an ipod now..
not really interested in the minis.. well, kind of interested but not really. not at all interested in the shuffle.
I am slightly curious about the size bump they are saying the regular line might get, but honestly 60GB is good enough for me at this point.
will think about it for a few days
also, do iPods EVER go on sale? never seen in yet. might have to use my sister-in-law to get a student discount.
Apple has sent out invitations to a "Special Music Event" to be held at 10:00AM in the Moscone Center West in San Fransisco on September 7th..
Why wait till Wed?
New Products:
- Cingular will announce an iTunes compatible phone - the "Rocker"
- New 2GB ipod called the "Nano" - it will sport a color screen and will be much smaller and thinner than a mini. Price = $199
No video ipod.. You heard it here first.
Wow, sounds pointless. Hopefully it's not true.- New 2GB ipod called the "Nano" - it will sport a color screen and will be much smaller and thinner than a mini. Price = $199
Apple invited media to a special event to take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Moscone Center West in San Fransisco on September 7, 2005. The teaser invite featured a pair of denim jeans and the caption "1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again."
ThinkSecret reports that Apple's event will be devoted to the new iTunes-enabled Motorola phone that has been long discussed. The new phone is reportedly available in two capacities: 256MB and 512MB allowing users to store 70 and 130 songs respectively.
According to the rumor site, users will be able to buy songs over Cingular's network for approximately $2 a song. This contradicts previous comments by Steve Jobs.
Meanwhile, analysts reported that interest in an Apple-branded iTunes phone appears to generate a significant amount of interest based on a small 200-person survey.
ThinkSecret also notes updates to Apple's iPod mini are on the horizon. The new flash-only based design is reportedly 20-25% smaller and will likely be introduced at Apple Expo Paris. Sizes are reported to come in a 4GB, 6GB and 8GB sizes and sport a color screen with slightly higher resolution. Meanwhile the high end iPod shuffle is expected to be bumped up to 2GB ($129-$149) with the 512MB and 1GB iPod dropping in price respectively to $69 and $99.
Buzz about an entirely Flash-memory based iPod mini first appeared in late August amidst reports that Samsung had negotiated to become the primary Flash supplier for Apple.
Meanwhile, many were surprised of Apple's announcement that there will be no Keynote speech for the Apple Paris Expo which will kick off on September 20th.
a couple of things to remember. while it may not seem like that much capacity, remember that first and foremost this thing is a phone. for me to get that much capacity out of my phone I have to buy a 256MB or 512MB MMC and then I still only have a couple of average apps, certainly nothing as good as an ipod interface, by which to control the music. AND I have no stereo headphones that I know of. so basically this is a phone that has the addition of being able to hold 70-130 songs. also remember that most people will take their phone with them to workout. 70 songs is easily enough for any workout meaning one less device to have with you when you go.AB 101 said:$2 songs and a capacity of 70 to 130 songs sounds like backwards progression to me.
But maybe thats just me. :/

They have it listed under november 9th, I wonder if there's any credibility behind this.Timbuktu said:
but none of those drains a phone anywhere near actually talking on it does. as to the phone dying when someone really needs it, well, keep your phone charged. The same thing is able to happen now if you don't charge your phone usually every few days.AB 101 said:Games on cell phones.
Music on cell phones.
Pictures on cell phones.
We sure are creating a nice battery drain on phones now.
Hate to see what hapens when someone gets in a real emergency and finds their phone dead because they were playing music on it all day.
Or taking pictures.
Or playing games.

Apple Video iPod: A New Avenue for Consumer Content
Buzz has hit an all-time high for the much hyped Apple Video iPod that may be released next week. Several blogs like Gizmodo and Engadget have photoshopped their best guess what it may look like. Om Malik is more definitive: "Apple Will Do a Video iPod. Apples big announcement is expected to make the announcement at a special event September 8th in San Francisco.
Probably, but don't bet on it right away. It took Apple over 6 months to give previous gen users the basic firmware upgrades that came with the 4G (shuffle songs on the main menu, etc).borghe said:I have no interest in a video ipod. really. I went ahead and bought my ipod photo now because I am hoping that any non-video/music-related improvements they do make will make it back to my photo.
Apple's iTunes Music Store did not roll-over today as it has historically done on Tuesdays, hinting that content announcements may be part of Wednesday's special media event. The store also failed to offer visitors an "iTunes New Music Tuesday" track and podcast.
As part of its content offerings on Wednesday, Apple is expected to announced that the iTunes Music Store will feature Madonna's new single "Hung Up" a full week before it's available in stores. The iTunes Music Store will also begin selling the pop singer's new album one day in advance of retail stores, complete with a special bonus track not shipping on retail CDs.
