I've tried lots of headphones over my years. Yes, The airpods gen3 are the BEST headphones I've ever used.
I'm sure maybe giant over ear connected to wires to a large electronic box in your living room in a sound quite environment will sound better, But I don't live like that.

Right... and I'm sure these prices have nothing to do with Apple's decision to continue with the unupgradable nature of their devices. These two images are from purchasing pages for the new MacBook Air and iPad Air respectively

If it was really about performance and energy efficiency, they wouldn't need to fleece their customers for what should be relatively inexpensive upgrades.

For comparison's sake, here's the cost for upgrades on Lenovo's new Snapdragon Elite Yoga Slim 7x.

Yes earbuds,
Bluetooth audio quality has improved greatly over the years.
Not to sound like an apple commercial, but Sound Quality, Battery Life, portability, usability with iPhone and Ipad auto switching. Is incredible. And I can use them talk on the cell phone.
I'm talking about the Gen3.
The Gen 1 had some sorta flaw with the battery life. Sound quality wasn't much better than any other bluetooth device. kind of crap for how expensive they were.
The Gen 2 fixed the battery but didn't do enough for the sound quality. Had issues with device connecting and switching.
The Gen 3 they went ham on the audio quality. Has some neato features about positional audio relative to where an Iphone is. Kind of fun. I can switch seamlessly from ipad to iphone.

I don't know if it's possible to try them out at a Bestbuy but these little buds are really good.
