I don't think any of Apple's online/cloud stuff solutions are strong. iCloud itself is kind of a joke besides syncing/backup, I can't imagine why anyone would want to use their icloud.com email or calendar, for example, and even notes and reminders are this huge fullscreen monstrosity. It doesn't even have Photo Stream which is the one thing I would use it for

Photo Stream is great, between that and calendar syncing it's the stuff I like iCloud best for.

iTunes Match is great in theory but in practice I've had to turn it off more than once because it doesn't "just work".

Sometimes you guys just mystify me. It's so easy for me to buy through Apple and propagate the media to everything. It's like we live in a different world.

I guess it's because I've embraced their ecosystem end to end.

Haha then why did you ask the question?

Why would you ever need to use it except for in a case of emergency? My iPhone, MacBook, and iPad all have access to that data at all times. It's a courtesy that they even have a web interface.

but why can't I have Photo Stream on icloud.com? It would be so much easier to take a photo on my iPhone and have it uploaded so I can use it/show it on any PC instead of emailing it to myself

You don't think iCloud is a good thing except for its most important and useful feature? All right.

Uhhh why wouldn't you want your email/calendar/notes/reminders accessible on any computer? At work, at a friends house, on your non-Mac PC...

Where would I ever be where I don't have my phone or iPad, and need to use some random web browser? This would never happen.

I hate iTunes as much as the next guy (I really, reeeealy despise it) but I don't think it is fair to state that it is trojanning shit. Quicktime and Safari are built in to OS X, and iTunes uses their frameworks, they are needed on whatever platforms it is installed on, it's about modularity. iTunes started it's life on the Mac, it is put together like other Mac apps from the era it was built. It is however inexcusable that they hadn't done a rewrite like they had everything else since then. It is also becoming less necessary because most things can be managed on the devices themselves these days (save for the smaller iPods). I'd say it's also a bit unfair to compare it to Amazon and Google's solutions which are brand new, unless you have amnesia and have forgotten what the web looked like in the early 2000's - even web based email access was a joke until 2004. iTunes came out in 2001.

Apple should have an online solution, and likely will once things like sprout core and HTML5 reach more maturity, but Apple has always favored native solutions, and at the time it was the ONLY solution.

It always wants to install Safari and Quicktime when it updates. Neither are necessary for its operation. Thankfully they killed Windows Safari and I imagine Quicktime will go soon.

And yes I understand it was necessary then but it's not now and they have been slow to move. HTML 5 media is nothing new it works now in all major browsers and has for quite some time (not to mention Apple's Quicktime plugin is at least a decade old). Apple isn't at a disadvantage to Google and Amazon, they are worth as much as both combined and they are a huge part of the WC3 and produce one of the most used browsers. To not have adopted web interfaces in that position is almost criminal. And as I said they don't have to kill native. All they needed was a separate team and some foresight.

It is, because of iCloud, but I honestly can't tell you the last time I used a friends computer to check my mail. Isn't that what my iPhone is for? Why would you use a web browser over an IMAP compliant email client on a computer you personally own?

It's fine for checking email, but doing anything else with it? Gmail is so much better. Of course that's why I don't use iCloud web services (and just sync photo stream, notes and reminders)

Isn't that on iCloud.com

Yep, but he was asking "Why would you ever need to use it except for in a case of emergency?"

Who uses email clients on desktops unless they are corporate Outlook users? Everyone I know uses Gmail on the web.

meekly raises hand.

I use gmail in Apple's mail app on the Mac. I prefer the UI over their webpage and like having all my mail (gmail, work outlook, ISP mail) in one program

My lady friend does too.

EDIT: and i personally dislike using the web page for my Gmail.
I only use my iOS devices for it.

It installs webkit (used for rendering the store) just the same, just not the tiny wrapper around it for general web access, aka Safari.

I suspect it may install Quicktime (even if it uses the Windows media playback engine, I am not sure what APIs they call currently, but I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that it no longer uses QT7) due to licensing reasons. They need to pay to license the codecs, and I'm sure Apple does that within QT.

Still a valid question. Not having my phone would constitute emergency, why would I access these things on a computer not my own when I have a perfectly good phone in my pocket?

Lol, no idea. It's just weird watching people constantly try to jam square pegs down round holes

It really is. I guess everyone has their own ideas of creating a solution to solve a problem, and when Apple's and their ideas don't match, it's instantly Apple who is at fault.

Somnid: Never had a problem with Mail.app. Works great.

Webkit isn't installed. It's part of the app. The Quicktime playback engine is as well I believe. I'm talking about full applications along with iCloud control panel it wants to install every time you go to the update screen. You can uncheck the boxes, yes, but it's an annoyance of mine.

Man, this is weird, I just assumed everyone here uses Gmail. Do you guys reply to a lot of emails?

I just worked on a homework assignment with my group where we emailed each other a lot and worked on a Google document and I can't imagine doing that without the web interface

lol, that's so minor.
I do the same though, uncheck those boxes.

I only use Gmail for my main account.
I don't see why it would be difficult to accomplish without the web page?

I use Gmail for my personal mail, but not the web interface. It routes through Apples mail app on all my devices.

Work email is through Lotus Notes on my computer at work. We use a third party iPhone and Android service/app for mobile.

It's been a couple of years, but I remember that dialog having a preference to say you never want those apps and they never show up again.

Dead battery? Forgot phone? Lost phone? Switching phones? Travelling? I haven't had an occasion where I've needed it but my friend dropped his iPhone in water and the only way for him to retrieve his contacts was to go into iCloud (since he doesn't use everything Apple). How are people even questioning this?

It really is. I guess everyone has their own ideas of creating a solution to solve a problem, and when Apple's and their ideas don't match, it's instantly Apple who is at fault.

Easy accessibility to the things you've bought is a bad thing now? Again, not everyone uses all Apple devices.

According to Apple Support Articles, QT is installed so iTunes can play older media files (probably due to the Sorenson codec). Newer versions of iTunes also appear to use an embedded version of Webkit on Windows, not sure when they changed this.

KingKong: It's pretty easy to attach a document in a reply in Mail.

Disclaimer: I don't use Google Docs.

buhdeh: I could of sworn I said emergency. Not having the use of my phone is equivalent to not having a phone. Good thing iCloud.com exists. Who cares if it has a crappy interface if you only access it when you drop your phone in a pool... That happens how often?

You're right. I think my post should have been directed to Tobor instead.

Attaching a doc isn't the same as live editing, chat, commenting, organizing, etc

And again, if you're just checking for new mail, that's fine, but for anything more, gmail.com is so much better. And yeah, iCloud is great for syncing, but the whole point of the cloud services is to have access to your stuff everywhere and it's not a very good service for that

yeah, but that's no longer just "gmail". that's a bunch of google's services working together. the original question was just about gmail.

If I was still in school and collaborating on projects, I would probably use the web interface for this stuff for all the benefits you mention. But I got out of school 12 years ago so I just need plain old email these days.

Man, I used to have to collaborate with damn floppy disks. and we had to save the portions of our lab reports and papers on multiple disks because they were so flakey and couldn't be read around 1/3 of the time. ugh, man, that was so long ago. So happy I don't have to so that anymore (work uses MS sharepoint to edit documents with multiple people.)

Yeah, we use sharepoint as well. There's a 0.00% chance the company would switch to google docs. Lol.

I am interested in the mini, but $330 for a 16GB can go take a walk. All the apps in the world could not justify 130 bucks more than the Nexus 7 if they are dropping the 16GB 50 bucks.

It's pretty good with regard to the iCloud website, but yeah, iCloud really badly needs collaboration stuff built into it.

I LOVE Photo Stream but its also because all of my stuff is Apple. Whenever I take photos with iPhone 5 it's instantly on my MacBook Air an when I transfer photos from my DSLR onto the MacBook the photos are instantly viewable on my iPad and iPhone through Photo Stream. And I can share it instantly with Shared Photo Streams with the family as they now all got iPhones.

I just bought the new iPad 4 days ago. I don't want a mini iPad but, now I hear that the new iPad is also getting a refresh. Is that legit? Obviously, tomorrow we shall know what are the chances though?

The refresh sounds legit. You are well within the return window.
