He's both semi-villain and anti-hero. A mercenary-for-hired kind of character. Think Catwoman, but more morally grey and selfish.

Long Story Short: Slade in the show has nearly nothing to do with the Slade in the comics to this point. And he currently is a much better character in the show than he has been in the comics in a very very long time.
