Ex-Bungie artist plagiarizes art for marathon (Up: Bungie confirm, offer to do right by the original artist)

James is preparing a response when the ban lifts

I thought it might just be an artist carrying on, no it's just blatant copy and paste lol.

They couldn't even be bothered for AI to generate images in 'style' of this artist and many others which is a definable style reminding me back to Wipeout, Finals touches, cyberpunk advertising etc.

What have they been doing for 6 years?

At what point do we consider there is something wrong with bungie's hiring vetting process, if they are continually hiring frauds that steal work from others.
What are you talking about? Bungie only hires the best blue haired woman/They/Thems/PoC? How dare you draw their hiring practices into question :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The main unique, interesting thing about the game wasn't even originally created by Bungie.

Shitposting aside, there needs to be some sort of personal responsibility from artists who are hired and scrape the Internet nicking things. You can't actually expect the studio to cross reference every piece of art etc.

not being ass, as I'm also logo designer as well...
but... simple geometric like that is so easy to make, and doesn't even know if there is also people made before them,
it's because super simple shape, everyone can do that even without reference, or without even know if other people made it already.

I clicked on this thinking it would just be stuff in a similarly generic style.
But this looks quite blatant .

jup, that row with the small icons is extremely blatant. some of it is a bit too generic, but that part is pretty cut and dried

I'm sorry what?
this is extremely blatant, literally the same designs even partly in the same order, just in a different orientation.

image this, but with A. I.

Imagine those praising and defending Bungie's so called "unique art graphic realism".
Tbh and it goes for any game, I couldn't give two shits about who designed the art.

It's between these companies and the artists to solve any legal issues.

But if what the Marathon dev team said is true, they should compensate the artist and credit him for his work.

Its a bad PR regardless and shows Bungie simply copy paste whatever artwork they could find and declare it to have a very meaningful symbol to the Marathon lore. Cheap and lazy.

Sure, it definitely is.

But it doesn't concern me as a consumer, is what I meant.
And not just this case, but in general.

public humiliation.

From the article. Bungie seems to have a history of ripping off artists.

This isn't the first time Bungie has been accused of using the work of independent artists without permission. Just last year, Bungie admitted fan art was used while designing a Destiny 2 Nerf gun, and promised to compensate and credit the artist. In 2023, Bungie said it would do the same for another artist after an in-game Destiny 2 cutscene featured near-identical similarities to their artwork. And in 2021, Bungie confirmed that fanart of Xivu Arath was "accidentally used" in a trailer for the Witch Queen expansion.

I'm sure it was a "former artist" the other times as well. Stolen art has now appeared in or on gameplay, trailers, cutscenes and merchandise, yet the higher ups are apparently clueless to it all.

At least it gives them an excuse to delay it now.

"Conducting a thorough review of our in game assets" and "implementing stricter checks to document all artist contributions" ....says company on it's 4th plagiarism offense...

Sure champ, I'm sure next time things will reaaaaally be different.

Yeah, in the twitter thread there's a zoomed in image that shows they literally stole the accent icons from the dudes artwork. Absolutely blatant ripoff.
