Those fucking
deadite screaming children
were fucking nightmare fuel. Last episode was like evil dead movie we never got. Whole season was great over all. Though I hope we get longer episodes next season even if it means less episodes. Kelly is a top tier bad ass. And I hope they find a way to tie the remake into this.

The last three episodes delivered on the creepy factor which I felt was missing from most of the episodes in general. I hope we get more of this uniqueness in season 2.

I don't think they were Deadites but more like newborn demons that will grow into something similar to the one Ash summoned in an earlier episode. Ruby seemed to be writing new pages for them in the Necronomicon. I think from what Pablo said about Ash not knowing what's out there, these little things might be bigger problems in season 2. So glad a friggin' Deadite did say "I'll swallow your soul!" ... I think that catchphrase was completely absent up until the finale. Wish Deadites got uglier or progressively more deformed like in Evil Dead 2.

Well the show exists in a universe where time travel is possible, so who knows.

I just hope Evil Dead's mythology doesn't turn into convoluted nonsense.

I don't mind the loosey-goosey continuity of the franchise but things should at least add up within the same TV show.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to wait for season 2 to find out what the hell is up with that character.

I was catching up on Colbert a few days ago and heard Campbell say that her character is
the daughter of the archaeologist who found the book
... now I'm really confused.

This is what Ruby tells Amanda early on to explain how she knows so much. Clearly Ruby is not an entirely truthful character though.

Great ratings for Ash and to think that when it first began to air that it was nearly dead in the water. It has certainly been one of those rare shows that has actually gained viewers then lose them.

I would imagine that so long as the ratings continue to stay around these numbers next season then a season three and more would be likely.

Finished Season 1 yesterday. Pretty much the Evil Dead sequel I've been waiting for all these years.

Everything at
the cabin
in the last few episodes was perfect.

The ending was also classic Ash.

No new Ash vs Evil Dead today. :-(

There were some brief update tidbits on the status of season 2.

http://www.slashfilm.com/ash-vs-evil-dead-season-2-script/

Starz presented to the Television Critics Association this morning and Starz CEO Chris Albrecht announced new series collaborations with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alejandro Brugués. We asked the status of the second season of Ash vs. Evil Dead, which was greenlit before the season one premiere. Albrecht says development is moving full speed ahead.

“Saw the first script a couple days ago,” Albrecht said. “Looks really good. Second seasons are so important for series. That’s the difference between making a movie and making a series. The cast really gelled through the first season. They appropriately got a lot of acknowledgment from the fans and press. We’re really excited. This is a series. I think it’s got the legs of a real series. The storylines and what I’ve seen on paper back that up. We’re on track for another season in 2016.”

Also showrunner, Craig Digregorio, mentioned that next season will delve more into Ash's past (don't know if that's a good idea). Meanwhile on Bruce Campbell's Twitter he seemed to confirmed that next season will be half hour episodes as well, stating "Less is more".

And as I was typing this, RIP Angus Scrimm. :-(

It's a TV show on a movie channel that plays everything uncensored... Argument invalid.

I think what you were trying to say is that a TV show doesn't have the budget of a movie and that would be somewhat accurate. The budget of Evil Dead was about 20-30 million but the budget of the show is about a million per episode and a lot more is going on.

Personally, I think the show would have been great had it not been for the filler.

Ah. Didn't know it plays on a movie channel over there. If it is a dedicated movie channel then, yes, my argument would be invalid as age restriction doesn't apply. The only thing left then would be what you said correctly, the cost comparison.

I hope they get the Raimi's on board a little more in season2, but was happy with how the first went and ended.

I hope so too, but with no mention as to who is writing the pilot script, and a fairly recent Raimi interview where it sounded like he is just handing off the series now unless he felt he's needed (can't remember where I read it), I get the sinking feeling we won't see his name in the director's credits next season.

I put the apostrophe in the wrong spot, as I'd like to see Ted and Ivan involved as well (in front of and behind the camera respectively) as Sam.

I'm sure Ivan would be involved with some of the writing again as he was for a few episodes this season. Back when they were doing the Comic Con panels they did say Ted would probably be in the second season if there was one as he couldn't make the first one due to scheduling conflicts.

Just finished it. I thought the series was great before the finale. I don't even know what to think afterward. That was probably the most enjoyable 1/2 hour of television of all of 2015.

I really can't believe they went there with that last choice...so fucking awesome, haha.

Yup. That caught me by surprised and made me shout "Oh fucking hell, ASH!!!" lol. That thought quickly changed to "Oh gosh, I think you guys are kinda fucked" and the best part was that Pablo and Kelly looked like they were thinking the same thing. Completely unexpected ending and that was what made it really great, it was unexpected. Now the path is completely clear for series 2 which is, what heck are they going to do now? What is going to happen to them and the world around them? It's a mess... I hate it's a mess to this degree as it leaves a bitter sweet that is stuck in my chest, but this approach is definitely better for the good guys cannot win ALL the time for it is too typical and expected. Good stuff... but that sweet. UGH! Series 2, please hurry so that sweet can quickly go down.

I am late in watching the finale, but damn! Fantastic final episode. The cliffhanger of the penultimate episode was great, but I knew I was in for something special in the finale when Ash caught the spinning chainsaw midair before impaling Deadite Amanda.

Great way to finish the season, and sets the stage very well for season 2. And the direction in the final episode was the closest we got to Raimi the whole season. They need to bring him back for more.

Just watched the first episode. It's stupid and ridiculously entertaining. Love it! Totally Sam Raimi. Does the rest of the series hold up?

I liked the first few eps quite a bit, then there was a good one or 2 later in the season. YMMV. I've always been a big Evil Dead fan but overall I thought the series was a little disappointing, would much rather have had it be a 90min hollywood movie than a 5 hour TV show with a Starz budget.

I think it was the second to last episode but one show director just nailed the Raimi-style of filmmaking. You could tell he did his homework.

The three initial episodes are my favorite but I am in the minority.

Rest of the show is pretty good but I felt Raimi's absence.

I expect nothing less than Ted Raimi in all the episodes from the second season, playing a different character each episode.

Ted did play a deadite sidekick in one of the games. I'd rather see Ted Raimi in there as Ash's sidekick then the other characters.

Rest of the show is pretty good but I felt Raimi's absence.

For me the first and last episodes were the best even though the last one felt a little drawn out and lacked Raimi's presence. Everything in-between (especially with the cop character) was ultimately filler.

I finished watching the first season.

Main thoughts -

The lack of Sam Raimi after the first episode kills a lot of the energy in the later episodes.

The Evil Dead is a series that is about it's raw set pieces and weird inventive action. It's not known for it's writing. Unfortunately the writing here is also very weak, but it's way more noticeable since there's much more space to fill as a mini-series.

The character motivations and choices that move us from episode to episode are not very convincing and are a very weak glue to get us from set piece to piece, of which there are very few memorable ones between the first and final episode, with the main highlight being the diner sequence in the middle. The sense of urgency that is created in the first episode is diffused over the middle portion of the season.

Another problem with the weak writing is how disjointed the events feel from episode to episode, which is also a product of how short they are. Very few of them had any kind of dramatic sense of completeness and almost always ended super abruptly.

The Evil Dead is a series built on bold style, which Ash vs The Evil Dead lacks through out most of the season. The vast middle portion of it felt like a cheap CW show. This comes down to execution and a lot of the parts that are supposed to have impact - things like the stinger leading up to the opening titles and the endings for the episodes - generally lacked dramatic punch.

Ash as a character - I feel like a bit more could have done to give him depth since we're dealing with a whole season of episodes and he's also quite a bit older than he was in Evil Dead 2 - one would imagine he'd be slightly less shallow. He's one-note to a fault, even though the first episode goes to some lengths to show what his life has become - I wish some more pathos could have been injected into him, as the pay off for the fever dream sequence and the final episode would have been way more effective.

To sum up - the first and final episodes are strong - the rest, at varying levels, lack a cleverness or inventiveness which it basically substitutes with over the top gore. The main trio of characters get the job done I guess, with the rest feeling wasted for the most part.

I'm hoping for a stronger second season.

There are a few fan edits floating around on the web that combines all the eps into one continuous "film". Some just simply lop off the credits and title cards, but there is one out there (called the "Evil Dead 4" cut) that goes a bit further with its edits. It runs roughly about 3 hours and 40 minutes. The length of your average Peter Jackson film.

Transitions feel mostly seamless, and some are creatively done. Some scenes are rearranged (ex. Fisher is introduced much later). Some fat is trimmed (most notably in the middle episodes), and some of the awful dialogue is snipped ("I'm going to rape you"). Most importantly the whole Fisher/Ruby subplot is completely excised along with the references to it. I'm surprised nothing felt lost with those scenes gone, and it works pretty well in the edit's favor.

Unfortunately not everything works (a few jarring edits in the middle episodes, and the transition between ep 4-5 are nearly as smooth as the others), and I do feel that some moments shouldn't have been completely removed (ex. the book attack with Pablo in the trailer in ep 6), but for the most part it works. A few tweaks here and there and it could be perfect.

I've only watched up to the cabin eps, but this cut may be the way to go for future re-watches. You can see the show's quick run time helping out with a seamless cut like this as the pacing doesn't drag down a whole lot. On the flip side, you can really feel the moments of poor writing and directing in the weaker episodes when directly transitioning into them.

Not going to post a link, but you know you found the right one when the first title card that pops up after Ash says "Fuuuuuuuuck" is "Bruce Campbell as" then cuts to him peaking out of his trailer.

I watch it this week, pretty alright show. The show does have quite a few bad performances from the secondary characters and the dialogue is straight up awful some of the time, that could add to some of the charm with a 90 minute movie but it got too much with a long format show, a few of the middle episodes were there was a lot character work was sometimes middling at best because of this. The cabin episodes though were just fantastic, everything I wanted out of a show like this.
