Clutch of the generation, holy shit. Way better than I expected.
Good:
- graphics. it looks insane
- world density. There's so much happening on screen at all times. Foliage, particle effects, tons of geometry, NPC's, animals. Technical masterpiece of sure
- vibes. Sneaking through the shadows as a Shinobi is just cool as fuck. This is literally what every AC fan has been waiting for since the first game
- hideout. Seeing this in previews and trailers made it seem super retarded and a waste of time but it is great and works incredibly well. Some dev team spent an insane amount of time polishing this whole system
- physics. They have drastically improved their physics engine so the amount of jank is reduced exponentially
- Naoe story is legit cool so far. Her motivation makes sense, her actions make sense. She's a good character
- checkpoint system. It's great!
- prone. Long overdue, and it's is great
- weather effects are insane. Wind blowing, rain coming from rooftops, puddles and mud forming on the ground.
- seasons are awesome. The idea feels superfluous at first but it actually is super cool to see areas move through the seasons
- Japanese voice acting is great. Lip-sync is not super but it's not a dealbreaker at all. Play it on Japanese dub
- respect for the culture. This game is a clear love letter to Japan. Ton of focus on traditions, honoring shrines, etc. There are entire databases explaining traditions and customs. A lot of time went into this for sure. I haven't had a single moment where I thought "wow this is mad disrespectful".
Bad:
- combat. Still clunky, but nowhere near as janky or as button-mashy as previous AC games. It's just not very rewarding, or fun
- flow of the game is a bit weird. Prologue seems to be missing quite some stuff, it feels like they straight up cut out a huge chunk of Yasuke. Which is great, I don't give a shit about him. But I'm 7 hours in and I've played as him for maybe 10 minutes tops. No complaints here though
- no wait mechanic or anything else to change the time of day. This is a HUGE oversight and I honestly don't understand how they forgot to add such a crucial mechanic
- some of the mechanics are a bit vague, like the spy system. I read the tutorial three times but I still have no idea what this is. The game dumps a ton of mechanics on you and at some point you're just like "wait what the hell is all this again"
Might still be the honeymoon phase (I'm seven hours in) but this game is legit a banger so far.
