Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Did you guys see this? I don't know where it's from (I've seen it on twitter)

I was reading about it few days ago in this article , stumbled upon it pretty randomly and was very surprised

http://asidcast.com/index.php/2014/11/ex-ubisoft-employee-talks-experience/

Personally i believe it , and pretty much agree with what writer at the end says.

Reading this, it clearly shows that game development has become more of a business rather than a passion thing. This also might explain the idea why Assassin’s Creed: Unity was such a mess at launch....

Is this old? Cause I remember when this happened http://www.pcgamer.com/pc-gaming-has-around-a-93-95-per-cent-piracy-rate-claims-ubisoft-ceo/ Any long time pc gamer probably remembers this.

If this isn't old well then he still thinks we're all pirates which isn't surprising considering the love/hate relationship ubi has always had with pc gamers.
If he really thought 90%+ of PC gamers are pirates, they'd have stopped making full priced titles for PC. That's obviously not sustainable. Nobody would keep making PC ports of games if they weren't moderately profitable.

How do I find out if this game is operating properly using my 970 SLI setup? I don't think this game is running right it has bad shuttering.

Tried it today (I got it from the nVidia coupon earlier this week but didn't play it until now because of WoW) and I have to say I am very disappointed in the performance so far.

i7 2600k, 4.4 Ghz
GTX 780 SLI, stock
MX 100 512GB SSD
8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM
2560 x 1600 Dell monitor

I am averaging sub 30 FPS with default settings the game booted with :-/ .

So I got this game yesterday. Retail of all things as well. Grabbed the Bastille edition for equivalent to 30 dollars because a store had clearly mispriced it so I thought why the hell not. 5 (!) DVD install but still better than having to do a lengthy download.

Getting great performance on my rig. Much better than I expected. The game is smooth and looks great. I just got to Paris and I must say I'm very impressed. Had a few isolated instances of npc pop in but nothing severe. This is what I get running the latest patch and latest nvidia drivers:

Indoors 60fps
Regular gameplay 50-60 fps
Heavy crowds 40-50 fps
Cutscenes 30-40 fps

Running at 2048 x 1152 (downsampled to 1080p) , everything maxed apart from AA on FXAA.

i5 3570k @ 4.6 ghz
GTX 660 SC 3GB SLI
16gb RAM

I must say I'm pretty chuffed as I thought that I would need to upgrade my GPUs this year but they are still going strong and spanking everything aside provided I don't push the resolution too far above 1080p. Think I'll stick with what I have until I get a 4k TV towards the end of next year, don't need much more TBH.

What if you don't downsample and just run at 1080p? Wouldn't you get near 60fps? I would prefer that to be honest.

Really? Ports don't cost that much. Ubisoft said before that a WiiU port costs ~1 million euros http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...says-wii-u-ports-costing-under-USD1-3-million and I'd wager that a PC port would costs less + NVIDIA kickbacks.

I noticed minimal difference in the framerate (literally ~5 fps give or take) switching up to 2048 x 1152 from 1080p. I got a huge drop off when I pushed it to 2400 x 1350 though. 1080p doesn't improve the minimum framerates when in densely crowded areas either. That's down to the CPU.

Happy to sacrifice a couple of frames to slightly improve my IQ and clear up some of the shimmering on gold fittings in the indoor areas.

Could be the connection to Uplay. My game looses connectivity all the time and everytime it does it stutters for a second. Going offline solved that for me.

Was wondering if the G3258 OC'd + R9 290 would be able to run Unity at 1080p/30fps, medium quality? It's for a PC i'm building for a friend.

Hey is anyone else having high CPU usage with the game?? It's always in the 90/100 on all cores constantly... I mean I'm sure that's whats causing my lower than normal frame rates..

I'm in the 50s mostly with everything on ultra except shadows on High and FXAA.

I have a 970 and 3570k 4.4ghz.

Whats the best way to lock it a
smooth 30fps?

Through nVidia cp or Rivatuner?
how should I set everything up. The stuttering/framedrops become worse and worse the more I play

What's it Oc'd to? If it's at 4.5 ghz and above you might be ok for 30fps at 1080 with most things maxed.

Inspector or NVCP use half-refresh vsync. But to get more stable frametimes set RTSS to 30 as well. I tried it but it was way too hard for me to play , i start to feel sick after short time. Strange how some games like Dark Souls on PC run at 30fps and i have zero problems. But AC:Unity for example is totally unplayable for me.

You can also try and OC your monitor to 70hz and then halve it at 35fps for a little smoother experience.

Same here , same settings except i got 4670k , although i don't seem to get CPU bound 99% of the time , there are few scenes that make my GPU usage dip by few percent. OC didn't help at all , it was bit strange

Man...i know what you mean. Difference between 30 and 60Fps is huge. But since i dont have a high end rig currently, might as well set it to 30-35fps and turn everythng up and enjoy this beauty (even though it seems like i still have to set textures to High, ultra high makes fps all over the place it seems)

For the people with stuttering and bad performance, this simple fix solved ALL stuttering in my case too:

http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/957078-100-working-fix-for-bad-lag-stutter-mouse-movement!!

So what you do is, when at main menu in game, open your task manager and right click ACU.exe and set Priority to NORMAL!

Techical information:
Since the CPU gets ordered to prioritize calculations for ACU game instead of basic window's functions that is in task manager, it does not have the equal priority for all the processes, instead you could say it puts lower priorty for ex. mouse than the game itself.

So by putting the game to normal, it CAN happen that you may loose...1FPS at highest, but instead get totally smooth mouse movement

After trying all possible combintations of settings, forcing TripleBuffer, limiting framerate, etc. with RadeonPro, DXtory, RTSS, ... this is the only fix that makes the game smooth for me, and I am playing with an Xbone controller, so this is not just a mouse related fix.

Kudos to totte115 for the great finding.

Excellent find. If it works for me I'll report back. I basically have a solid 30fps at max settings, but there is some very subtle stutter from time to time that hopefully this will help with.

Update:
Same computer specs but I moved the game over to my TV (1080p) and set the settings ranging from Very High/High and with FXAA. I am getting absolute shitty performance and to make things worse there is hitching in the game that I can't explain what's causing it. This is so fucking infuriating.

This makes no sense... How can you have so much better performance at a higher resolution and better settings...

Same exact thing here, about to give up and wait a few weeks until they fix everything

No idea mate. What frames are you getting at 1080p? Only thing I was going to suggest is to try using FXAA over any of the other AA solutions since you are limited to 3GB but that doesn't seem to have helped in your case.

Might point towards a CPU or system RAM issue? Maybe 8GB is a bit low?

Which Nvidia drivers are you on?

AMD 7950
Intel i5-3450
Latest beta drivers

Running the game limited at 25/26 fps seems to do the trick. Everything on Ultra high, FXAA, 1680x1050
I won't complain. I can live with the sub-par framerate as the game is seriously a beauty to look at.

EDIT : ok the 5 sec. freeze is annoying though. Should I wait for another patch or play the game anyway. Mmm I don't know...
EDIT : ok that's it I give up. The freezes are unbearable, especially outdoors in large npc crowds. I only have 4gb of RAM though. Could be related but I think this is an engine issue. Other than the technical issues I'm bored to death "playing" these games as usual. The whole interactive movie aspeect doesn't appeal to me anymore (then again I enjoyed The Walking Dead so I don't know...)

It's running fine on my R9 280x but I find the game quite underwhelming graphically speaking, only the light amazes me, the rest of textures don't

edit: I have settings on high/ultra

Getting seriously pissed off with this now. The game has taken to crashing almost every 15 minutes. Only get this, it only happens when playing on my TV @ 1080p. If I play on my 1680x1050 monitor, its fine. But for some reason, it crashes constantly @ 1080p. Not only that, but when it crashes, it fucks up the audio on my TV and no matter what I do post crash, I have no sound whatsoever, and only a reboot will fix it.
I got it to crash less frequently by putting uplay in offline mode (lasted 58 mins without a crash then), but this is bullshit. Having to reboot the fucking PC every time this shit crashes is just unacceptable. Id been enjoying the game up til now but this is indefensible.

The guide by AndyBNV on geforce.com suggests the following settings for a 770 to keep above 40fps:

Where does the MFAA run into this?

Seen the screenshots for this on high end PC and decided to use my Free-coupon to get AC: Parity, wasn't gonna pay for it with Ubi's crap but the shots look absolutely stunning.

I haven't really played much, just to the opening scene with Arno, temped to wait until the tessellation patch comes out (whenever that is) as got plenty to keep me occupied, dragonage still to purchase + obsessed with dayz.

Curious how MFAA would run on a 980GTX @1510mhz, 7480mhz, 4.7ghz 4790k @ 1440p DSR compared to the other variations.

Not for me. MFAA works wonders. Put it at 2xMSAA, activate MFAA and judge for yourself honestly. You have the hardware, give it a try :)

i have. the shimmering and flickering is unbearable with any option besides fxaa.

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Nvidia-Geforce-Grafikkarte-255598/Videos/Nvidia-MFAA-Video-1143013/

first video is fxaa compared to txaa, 2nd video is msaa 2x compared to mfaa 4x. ill stick with fxaa unless something is fixed.

Bullshit fearmongering/trolling at a time when people are most likely to believe whatever bad news they hear.

The PC version of Unity isn't even horrible technically, its just the game in general, on all platforms.

I know Reddit has one of these things every other week, with half of them turning out to be bullshit, but nothing in that image seems outrageously improbable to me.
It's basically: Higher ups at Ubi don't give a shit about a game's quality, just to hit the fiscal deadlines.
I don't need an insider to tell me that, it's very much evident by what they release year in/year out.

stick to fxaa, it works better

Did some testing with MFAA/MSAA, MSAA, FXAA... I personally found FXAA to be too soapy, similar to MFAA....

Do not know if it is just me, but seems that MFAA screws up the shadows, the smaller detailed shadows.. for MSAA x4 (with MFAA off) seems cleaner, sharper, no soaping, with full shadows, I get around 55fps on streets with crowds (start of the game) with jumps staying over 60fps so performance gains seem negligible with everything maxed out at 1080p.

Admittedly though my eyes are a little inexperienced with the comparisons.

So any fixes currently for the constant freezing when playing on a TV? I basically turned down most setting to low-high and turned off AA, and while the game runs fine and smooth most of the time (heck even the cutscenes) the constant 5-15second freezes every now an then is unbearable.

Anyone?

Edit: im guessing maybe the auto-saving has something to do with it?
Any way to disable it?

Like 40-50 FPS with some terrible "hitching" every 2 seconds. Latest nVidia drivers.

Between setting nvidia inspector and cpu priority set to normal, seems like a decent port, looks pretty stunning for the amount going on.

Edit: Ipad typing, lolz.

Like 40-50 FPS with some terrible "hitching" every 2 seconds. Latest nVidia drivers.

Is that at 1080p?

If so, thats actually suggestive of SLI not working for you since the performance on my 2 cards in SLI is normally just above what you would expect from a single GTX 780.

Make sure you have the 344.75 drivers installed. Download them from Nvidia's website and manually install them even if you have done previously on geforce experience. I had to manually install those drivers as Geforce Experience didn't install them properly.

Ok, the game seems to have fixed itself now. I disabled SLI and launched the game as requested above and to my surprise the hitching was gone. So at this point I pretty much believed that SLI was causing the hitching and to confirm this I enabled SLI and restarted the game.

No hitching. Hmm.

So at this point I went full YOLO mode and maxed the game out except I used FXAA and the game was pretty much locked at 60 FPS. So I don't really know what happened here but the game seems to have fixed itself? I mean I haven't updated any drivers and the game hasn't received an update as far as I know.

So I can join the people saying this game is absolutely beautiful. I mean it was beautiful before but it's also running smooth as butter now.

Cross quoting myself from another thread. The problem fixed itself after I disabled SLI and re-enabled it. Weird. But at least it works now.

Everything maxed out except AA (Using FXAA) I am 60 FPS locked.

Cut scenes drop to 50s sometimes but I am happy with the performance now.

Is Unity the only "next-gen only" game that is currently on PC?
I am trying to figure out if the high requirements of unity is a one-time thing or if i should expect similar requirements/performance from upcoming "next-gen only" games.

How is the framerate when playing it on your 1080p TV?

The requirements turned out to be highly exaggerated. An HD7970 (one of the minimum cards) can run the game at ultra settings, FXAA and get mostly 30fps at 1080p.

GTX 970
4770k
16gigs vengeance ram

everything maxed out + TXAA @ 1080p

Avg around 40~45fps running around on the streets and 50~60 on rooftops. cut scenes drop into the 30's and mid 20's.

Just bought a 2nd 970. Hopefully it will lock things in as close to 60 as possible.

Is your card or CPU overclocked or something? because I have pretty much the same setup as you (3570k) I'm in the 30s when running around on the streets with those settings..

Heard nothing about it. Last update on their 'update blog' was dated 13th Nov

One thing I hate about late November games is that patches will be half assed until December due to the holiday season. I don't think we'll get any patches this week.
