Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/lg-34um94-ultrawide-monitor

Not sure what the difference is between the 34UM94 and 34UM95.

Was curious too, i snagged this from Reddit;

  • Anyone know the difference between the LG 34UM95 and this LG 34UM94?

  • It looks like the only difference is with the warranty; the commercial version (i.e. the 34UM94-P) has a 3-year warranty while it's just 1 year for the consumer model.

  • The bottom part of the stand is also black instead of silver. But yeah, that's about it.

On overclock.net someone posted a screen of them talking to asus customer support and they said the monitor will be $650
Here I was thinking my recently purchased VG248QE with AG film removed would tide me over. Shit. Just need to find someone that will remove the AG off the Swift for me.

The demand for this is very high. Not sure why they would release it at $650 vs the original $800 price point.....skeptical of this but I'd like to be wrong.

Asus themselves comfirmed it on fb. Sauce is on overclock.net forum... 650$ for na.

If it makes you guys feel any better i paid £671. If you convert that in to $ its $1128.86

The UK gets totally fucked on price for electronics.

I'm happy with the price either way since I've been planning on $799 from the beginning. Granted the lower price would be a nice bonus but at the same time I'm worried it would make it even harder to find since people on the fence might jump at that lower price.

So when is this coming out in the US? I thought the release date was the end of July, but can't find it on any US stores.

No. When the facebook post was made 2 different people decided to text message Asus employees they know and they confirmed it as well.

Damn, $650 would be awesome. I was completely ready to shell out $800 whenever it went up for sale.

$799? Eh... I think I'll just build another rig, micro style. I'll stick with my APB278Q as my main monitor for a while.

Wow fuck off asus. All this bullshit with not giving us a release date and now they say there was an error with their price sheet... Oh and according to another screenshot on overclock the US won't be able to preorder

Edit: I hate that I want this monitor so much. When do expect other brands of the 1440 gsync to arrive?
Only thing to get frustrated with is speculation :P

If other 1440P monitors come out, they are likely to be as expensive or more expensive than this. The G-Sync module itself is something like a $500 part (OEM) that they take a bit of a loss on.

I am interested in getting one. Mkenjon has been on my ass to go beyond 60fps gaming for a while, so this might be the thing that pushes me to finally do it. Hehe

Does anyone else have a Swift yet on the thread?

Man i would have loved if i paid the UK equivalent of $799 (That's only £473). You US guys don't know how lucky you are.

I'm currently playing through Sniper Elite 2 with the monitor set to 144Hz. I'm getting a stable 110FPS with everything on ultra. i Love the higher refresh rate at 1440p! It's a real shame this isn't something that's universally supported on all new games.

A slightly left field question. Does anyone have any experience with the Hardware Colour Calibration tools?

Something like this:

Do they make much difference?

I own one.

Do they make much difference?
Yes, very much so, if you want accurate colors/gamma.

Of course, this being a TN, you can have accurate colors either in the center, or to the left, or to the right, or towards the bottom, or perhaps at the top. But never everywhere at once :P

Don't games ignore ICC profiles, making calibration for games a bit of a painful exercise?

Anyway, ignore the Spyder calibration tools. I don't believe they're particularly reliable out of the box and I know for a fact that the bastards drift over time. I've had a Spyder 3 for a while and it'll actually calibrate monitors to exhibit black crush. If you want to invest in a budget tool, the minimum has to be the X-rite Colormunki.

Not on modern windows at least, no.

Additionally, ignore the Spyder calibration tools. The bastards drift over time and therefore won't be any use after a while. If you want to invest in a budget tool, the minimum has to be the X-rite Colormunki.
The spyders aren't bad (version 4 at least), the crucial part is ignoring their software. Personally I use dispcalGUI.

So would you say that using one these on anything other than an IPS screen is a waste of time?

No. For example, using them on a PVA (which I like a lot more than IPS anyway) is great, and it even works for DLP projectors :P

But seriously, of course it also works on TN, but you'll only really get the center of the screen completely right.

Thanks for the info :)

It's the sort of thing i'd like to borrow for a weekend and use as opposed to buy one.The colours on the swift are a lot better than i was expecting but i did have to change some of the pre-sets.

I'm assuming they don't need to always be attached?

No. If you are interested in professional quality it's usually suggested to re-calibrate from time to time, as the display may drift slightly. But it's not really necessary for home use.

Not sure where you get that number from. The DIY G-Sync module is $200 so manufacturers are probably getting them for even less. I expect to see a lot of G-Sync monitors much cheaper than the ROG.

There is an AOC due in a few days that has G-Sync and 144Hz but only 1080p

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-022-AO

It's about half the price of the swift. Might be an OK budget G-Sync monitor? I haven't really herd great things about AOC monitors though.

I'm having a helluva time finding the exact thread, but it was on the BlurBuster forums around the same time the kits initially launched. Someone looked up the chip used in the module, and it had something like an $800 OEM price tag. There was speculation NVIDIA was getting a bulk deal at $500.

LG just PM'd me here to clarify some things about their 21:9 UWHD monitors.

I thought it might be of some help to people who are trying to decide which model to get:

Hi Drama Zed Nod,
I also sent the same message to Radioactive about the LG monitors! It's not much of a difference, but just so you know!

It can get a little confusing being that there are actually three models to compare! The 34UM94-PD and the 34UM95-PD are the same and the 34UM95-PE is slightly different!
The 34UM94-PD/34UM95-PD units are almost identical to the 34UM95-PE, with the only difference being that the 34UM94-PD/34UM95-PD come with factory calibration and the 34UM94-PE does not. The factory Calibration can be turned on to apply the factory calibration and when it is turned off, the screen reverts back to the picture quality set before calibration. The 34UM95-PE has a DC on/off switch on the rear side of product that you need to make sure is on before you turn the unit on!...IFV

So I've been aiming to get a new monitor to go with my new pc. This monitor seems to be getting a lot of positive traction but I'm not sure if it would be more worth it to go with something cheaper or to just go with buying a TV for the flexibility

I did just see a deal for one of the Korean monitors here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/QNIX-QX2710...5335869999&campid=5335869999&afepn=5335869999

Does that look like a good deal for that monitor? Or should I just go all out and go for the Asus when it becomes available? Also, what about the TV option, it always seems like you get more for your money with TVs compared to monitors, is there something I'm missing?

Thanks

TVs, outside of 4K sets, are unable to do 1080p at greater than 60Hz. The 4K sets also don't play nice with current parts, as with the HDMI spec on video cards, you're generally limited to 4K @ 30Hz. You need displayport to have 4K on a single tile at 60Hz.

So, generally, TVs are far less feature rich, in terms of what's important for gaming.

How well does something like dolphin work with g-sync?

Dolphin is one of the few important emulators that doesn't support true full screen mode, unfortunately, so it can't use gsync. Emulators that do support true full screen mode are excellent with it.
