Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

Chop/chomp up a slice of the bread to create two pieces which roughly resemble the GAF logo, and then put a strong light casting a shadow across it. This creates an effect which is harder to photoshop.

(I believe you, I just find the prospect amusing)

I've connected up the Swift to my new rig that I built it over the weekend.

I've only used it for about an hour but here is what i think so far:

  • It's fucking heavy. Don't get it delivered to work then carry it home for 90 mins on the underground like i did. Complete fail.
  • 27" is the biggest monitor i've ever had. It's the perfect size.
  • I've also never had a 1440p screen before. I really like it.
  • G-Sync seems to work like a charm. I plugged everything in and the Vertical Sync option was automatically set to G-SYNC in the Manage 3D Settings tab of NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • I had a quick go on Wolfenstine The New Order and Watch_Dawgs and i didn't see any tearing at all.
  • A little red light appears at the bottom of the monitor to show G-SNYC is active.
  • I thought the V-Sync option had to be enabled in the game in order to enable G-SYNC but it seemed to come on automatically.
  • I know people don't like the colours on TN panels compared to IPS panels but so far, straight out of the box the colours look pretty good. I haven't tinkered with them at all.
  • all the buttons are easy to use but it's strange they are on the back of the monitor. It's not an issue with the 5-way joystick but the other buttons would have been better on the front.
  • You can turn off the red glow on the base unit if you don't like it.
  • The monitor has a built in USB3 hub so you can connect your KB and Mouse straight to it.
  • The "Turbo" button doesn't ever seem to change the Refresh Rate. It will display what the current refresh rate is. I changed it to 144hz in the NVIDIA Control Panel and it displays that on the desktop but it drops back down to 60Hz in game (this is my first 60Hz + monitor so i might be missing something here?)

I can't be bothered getting my good camera out but i took some really shit blurry pics on my iPhone for you guys. Apologies for the ultra crap quality.

Thanks for the info. Good to know it auto sets the GSync in the Nvidia Control Panel.

Totally off topic but:
What's that display on the front of your case?
Can you provide an Amazon or Newegg link?

It's the contrary, you have to disable it.

You're locked to 60hertz in games? That's strange.

Sure thing dude. It's called the "Asus ROG Front Base Dual Bay Gaming Panel - Fan & System Controller" You'll need an Asus MOBO with the rog_extention port to use it thought.

I got it from Overclockers which is a UK based PC parts site. You can probs get it somewhere similar in the states.

The is the specific page:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BB-000-AS

It allows you to monitor the CPU frequency, fan speed and CPU temp on the front three dials. You can overclock the CPU with one of the buttons, scroll through the fans and adjust the speed of them and see the effect in temp. It also has some sound equalizers as it lets you connect your headphone straight to the front as opposed to the rear jack.

It's locked to 60 fps? What about other games using the same engine such as Rage? ID is a shadow of its former self...

This monitor is now coming out end of August in the US of A. WHYYYYYYYY.

Glad you are enjoying it though Drama, and thanks for the impressions. If you play Dota 2, would really like to hear what your thoughts on that are... must be a godly experience.

Well that would explain the 60fps there.

Is watch_dogs also frame locked?
A lot of ports are. Every UE3 game requires a tweak to the ini to allow them to run at 120/144Hz too.

Also be sure to set it to 144Hz in the monitor options in Windows. In this place:

Load up something like Quakelive, Warsow, Tribes, CS, or anything like that. Enable G-Sync's ULMB mode too.

No, but unless you're rocking SLI 780 ti's or CF 290x's, good luck getting it >60Hz.

mkenyon, is there some sort of list anywhere for what games don't play nicely with high Hz monitors? I doubt it, but can't hurt to ask. Maybe we should make a list/guide for gaf?

Just the one EVGA 780Ti Classy.

Thanks dude, i have it set in the two places i know of:

Also i don't think you can have ULMB on at the same time as G-SYNC (it's greyed out).

There is tons of info here:

This is correct.

But for games that run above 90Hz anyway, you don't need it.

Best.

Indies, Ports, and anything from Japan. Skyrim too, it breaks game logic. UE3 does, just requires a quick ini fix. I'd imagine there's some list somewhere.

ZOMFG PICTURES

If you can let me know how well Planetside 2 seems to work with G-Sync.

Works just fine. A friend has the VG248QE with the kit, but PS2 with the right config is pretty smooth. The only game he had issues with was ESO because there is no full screen mode. It is always in borderless window mode, and it doesn't work in that instance.

ESO has true fullscreen now, so that should be fixed.

Place I preordered messed up. They didn't bother informing me that all the monitors they had ordered where spoken for, and just pushed forward the delivery date by three weeks without telling me. Canceled that and ordered from another place that had them in stock. Best case I have it on friday, but a lot more likely monday/tuesday. The wait is killing me.

I hope they make a version of this monitor without Gsync, i was already looking for a more gamey monitor to put next to my 2 U2713HM.

I'm probably going to buy divinity and play that tonight / tomorrow. So i'll let you guys know what that's like.

I don't really play DOTA 2 or Planestside so can't give impressions on that. Sorry guys.

HQ TN = TN. I don't think I can ever go back from my MVA panels.

I just went from an MVA to a TN (different 144Hz monitor), and honestly it was horrible for the first 2-3 days and I was starting to regret it a bit, but after that I got used to it and completely stopped noticing, and now I'm totally in love with it. Playing 30fps console games is kind of painful now, tbh.

The moral of the story is, just go for it and you'll be fine in a day or 2.

No worries.

Let me know if you notice less eye fatigue with the high refresh. There's lots of anecdotes about it, with a pretty minor study done by ASUS, so I'm always interested to hear people's thoughts on that one.

Soon, you'll feel the same way about 60 FPS content. :P

On a slightly related note mkenyon.

I followed the advice given in the "I want to build a new PC thread" very closely over the last 6 months.

You take a lot of time to help people and give wonderful advice to all who ask. Even though i wasn't commenting at that point it really helped me with a lot of the decisions to build my new rig.

The discussions between you and Smokey (and a few others) basically helped me build something great and avoid so many potential pit falls.

Major Kudos to you mate :)

Just found the following on the Rog Swift page regarding the Turbo button:

What is TURBO Key?
This is one click refresh rate overclocking to switch between 60-120-144Hz. This removes any fiddling in the graphics driver control panel settings or digging through the LCD’s OSD settings.

Note: Some PC game titles might not support in-game refresh rate switching.

I'll try it on some other games that aren't Wolfenstine or Watch_Dogs (that's all i have on my new rig at the moment)

Oh. I was under the impression that most every PC game was capable of running these framerates. Didn't realize that so many were capped at 60. I'm guessing that's a physics engine thing?
There's a lot, like UE3, that just don't code for it. It takes a few tweaks and then you're set.

There's some that are hardcoded to not go above 60 FPS, especially Japanese ports. I assume they tie some game logic to frame rate.

Then there's games that do allow for it but become a janky mess, like Skyrim, due to physics/game logic being tied to framerate.

Though I prefer 120 FPS in all my games, the competitive games that *really* need it all support it for the most part. The only one off the top of my head that doesn't (or didn't) is Titanfall. That one thing literally prevented everyone in my social circle from buying it. Or at least, it was the proverbial straw.

This would annoy me to no end, holy shit.

If I ever find an LED annoying, I just tape a little piece of paper over it. Trimmed to size, with a few more layers of paper in there if needed. I can still see the status by looking for it but the thing isn't burning a hole in my retina any more. Sounds like these ones aren't that bad, which is nice. Manufacturers were going crazy with bright blue LEDs for a while there.

Check out my pics above.

The red light is actually on as i was running a game at the time. I don't think it's visible in any of them.

It's not overly bright or big.

I was just looking at those again, and might I suggest something for you. Check out this industrial wire shelving.

It can drastically increase the amount of space you have on your desk by adding another "tier" on which your monitor and PC sit. It also suspends your PC in the air, reducing the amount of dust it pulls in since it is not sitting on a flush flat surface.

That'll give you a lot more space for your KB&M. Pic of my old setup using it:

Your monitor can then sit directly at eye/head level. I do some other neat stuff with it, like the LED lighting, cable management, and zip tie my mouse cords so they are suspended and never have weird cable drag/issues with them.

Even older setup, to get an idea of the variety of configurations:

Thats actually a fantastic idea, i'm basically stuck with the furniture as i rent.

You got a link to purchase something like that? It'll work a treat.

I'm not sure where it's available in the UK, but our big hardware/home improvement type stores carry it here. The PDF I sent you is from a store called Storables, which specializes in organization/shelving type things.

I can confirm that the turbo button allows me to cycle through 60Hz to 120Hz then to 144Hz while playing sniper elite 2. Good stuff :)

I put everything on max and was getting a steady 50-55 fps.

I'm gonna have to mess with the colours on this monitor though. I'm noticing that textures look really washed out. I've noticed it in Wolfenstine especially.

I'm running on ultra textures so it must be the monitor.

Bro i think thats the game i've seen threads where people were saying the graphics were spotty.
