At least 11 members of congress argue Sony is unfairly impeding Xbox in JP

What's Microsofts excuse for every other country on the planet?
I mean Japan is different. The same games will launch on PS and be localized while Xbox doesn’t get the Japanese version. That’s sketchy. I dont know if Sony has anything to do with it, but it shows the landscape in Japan.

Its almost like Steve Jobs is describing Xbox since kinect. They aped the Wii. Then they lost Bungie so they built their own studio to ape Halo. Of course they failed. Then they lost Epic who decided to stop making Gears, so they went out and paid $100 million just to buy the IP and built their own studio to ape Gears. They kept churning out forza games every year from 2013 to 2018 treating them like yearly entries when they should be marquee events. They cancelled new IPs from blacktusk and platinum games, and their answer to Sonys uncharted 4 was literally buying a timed exclusive from a Japanese company. Phil literally said this. I went and got tomb raider because of uncharted. A game that was always coming to Xbox.

It's insane how Microsoft's entire philosophy lacks any kind of creativity. At best, they will go out and buy companies to make the same stuff for them, but they even stopped doing that in the Xbox One gen. So you lost the FF7 remake in 2015? Ok, fine, you still had a game with platinum games. See that through and have them develop exclusives for you. Platinum ended up shipping Nier 2, Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chain that same gen. Thats three exclusives they couldve had ON TOP of scalebound.

Ueda left Sony to go work on his own and created a new team. Go fund that team. That guy is a creative genius. Write him a blank check. Sony isnt blocking anything with Ueda. In fact, Ueda is done with sony.

The truth of the matter is that Phil didnt push hard enough. A lot of these devs simply didnt want to make games on xbox. I remember how either the Nioh dev or some other japanese developer said that they had no timed exclusive deal with Sony. they just didnt want to work on the xbox versions. THATS where Phil shouldve come in and said dude, here is some cash, please make an xbox version.

He didnt until just last year when he finally went to a very publicized trip to Japan and cut some deals. This was his 8th year in charge. And then he wonders why he only has 2% of the market share.

people act like sony is some benevolent force in the industry. the only reason sony didn't bid on ABK is because they can't afford it.

It really isn't. Japan just doesn't like Xbox.

Does anyone really think Sony has to do a thing to "impede" Xbox in Japan?

Just out of interest, what would you say if the contracts were openly leaked and discussed and it turned out that Sony were paying to cut content from xbox in Japan and were ultimately "impeding" their growth opportunities?

At least we can all agree Nintendo don't count when considering these discussions.

A car is a car is a car is a car.
That argument is Sony and the CMA's creation. I said it was stupid. I can just go back and show who is suddenly crying to include Nintendo.

I just think its funny how defensive you guys are. If those percentages are correct it is literally a monopoly in the high performance console space. Then just look at what kind of deals they push.

Is anybody actually considering the possibility Sony is actually doing this? Not saying it's the most likely outcome but just automatically assuming it's "Microsoft bought Congress and are clearly lobbying to make Sony look bad", like sure that's a definite possibility but blindly agreeing with one side without evidence is just as irresponsible

Its just funny to see people react like its impossible there's any validity.

98%. At least worth some investigation.

What investigation is really needed? 5 minutes in a Famitsu sales thread?

Yep, probably a nothing burger...but I'd love to see those contracts.

I mean, that paragraph, if true is pretty damning. How could Microsoft ever get a footing in Japan If Sony is making deals so that games can't launch there. We have seen it time and time again and thought it was just down to publishers not bothering with a Japanese xbox version even though it was launching in the west. If its true that Sony is paying publishers to not release the game on xbox in Japan then that is surely a bad thing?

I don't know how any one can defend that? Especially if it involves games like final fantasy 7 remake etc that's never come to the xbox on the west either?

It's true that they pay some developers for exclusivity (much like Microsoft does as well), but that is typically for games releasing globally and is not a Japan specific deal at all (think the Silent Hill 2 Remake just not getting an Xbox release anywhere).

Most of the time Japanese developers just don't bother releasing on Xbox because there is no point. Why create an Xbox version of a Japanese-centric game when there is very little audience for it there? This has been the case for many many generations now. In the 360 and One generations, the Xbox version would frequently release worldwide but would just be cancelled in Japan because no one owned one.

Sony would also have to have extremely deep pockets to fund the 1000s of games not getting an Xbox version in Japan.

People have no fucking idea how bad it is.

Lived in the middle east for almost a decade now and they still don't know what the fuck they are doing from a marketing perspective after all their years in the business. It's almost as if they have no idea how to market to consumers that aren't forced to go with their product monopoly. There is zero cultural awareness and zero tact. Considering how bad it is here I can only imagine how bad it is in Japan.

It's no coincidence that pretty much every product they've come up with in the last ~20 years that hasn't been focused on enterprise has met a similar demise, and I've owned pretty much every single one of the notable ones at some point (zune and multiple windows phones). Great products, shit marketing and shit execution.

Now they want to make their failings political in nature? It's laughable.

The definition was only ever relevant to scenarios involving COD, being that is the focus of the investigation, and COD hasn't released on a Nintendo system for a decade. I have to wonder if any of you have actually read the documents coming out of this case

It was a retarded argument from Sony to try and argue Nintendo doesn't count, since they are fine without CoD. It applies to the entire console.

Well here are the results. Total self own.

Exclusivity deals fucking suck mate. That's what I think.

Never been a fan of Microsoft buying ABK....but someone was going to. I get some people are upset...I buy every console day one, I have gamepass and playstation plus extra up until 2025 and if these companies keep bringing me good games to those services and their consoles I will keep subscribed and also buy games.

But yeah, exclusivity deals fucking suck. Buying the biggest publisher in gaming sucks.

IF something leaks from this our purchase that exposes some dodgy shit that any of these companies are doing to withhold content then I'm all for it.

If Sony has nothing to hide

To never make games on Playstation again? I'm not sure if that what "case by case" means. Also acquiring a entire publisher's business is very different than signing contracts to explicitly prohibit them from supporting a competitor.

It stems from Microsoft considering them so in their own internal documents that they sent to the CMA.

I'm glad to see they are now doubling down on it though.

Oh and Miku, "you guys huh"? Back at it again are we? I thought you didn't like the idea of factions and division?

Oh ya totally!

Microsoft pockets are real deep. Xbox division should try a little and compete with great games. Losers

Also 11 out of 535, give me a break

Ok...what about Nintendo?
If Sony cease to exist in Japan, would that make Nintendo the one impeding Microsoft? Sorry, but this sounds stupid as fuck. What about other countries? Does that applies to them too?

Yeah I don't think an obscure definition used to define a market pertinent to the investigation of a single game is going to matter to anything but that case. What do you think is going to happen from this? MS lobbyists have some politicians yelling to ruffle some feathers at the FTC

All you have are personal attacks. Im discussing the topic. Just leave me alone.

That's a "personal attack"? Interesting. Try reading it again and again until you realise it all stems from your own words.

Not my problem you decided to go with the "you guys" crap instead of just discussing the topic as it is. You could have said everything you said in your previous post without going down that road.

I dont have any idea what happens from this. Probably nothing. But I do think Sony twisted the truth of the console market to mislead CMA with this convenient high end console category. This is just applying Sony's definition to Japan. 100% fair.

I just can’t mate. Look at how they conduct themselves now, this company reducing Sony and Nintendo’s market share would be a disaster for everyone.

i have no problem with them gaining marketshare. its acting like a petulant child that is annoying. and shifting blame on others when their position in the overall market is due to their own faults.

Well it'd be even because Microsoft does that in the USA to Sony.
