Atlus CEO teases unannounced titles

Why do I feel conflicted about this? I don't have a reason to, yet I do.

It'll probably end an idol game featuring a few Persona characters and someone wearing Link's cap.

Honestly I'd take a port of Panzer Dragoon Saga to something recent than most actual new games.

A million times this.

Persona 4 was a mistake

Eh, it's okay. I have heard tell that Miyazaki thinks anime is a mistake tho. Kappa or whatever.
But in all seriousness, P4 is fine despite the critiques I've made of it in other topics. I don't like how it's lead to games that focus more on fanservice than writing but ehhhhhh (I did like the fighting games tho and PQ is.....okay, I guess. If I get past Junpei (and probably Yosuke too) being a pervert and the best P3 protagonist not being in it. Shinjiro is one of the few reasons to play the game honestly :P). That said, I greatly look forward to P4: Grooming All Night. In it you groom Koromaru and all the demons in the SMT series. ....I kinda really want that.

Demon conversations in SMT5 should be like Pokemon Amie.

Wow, I did not know that Atlus could theoretically use dead Sega IP, not that I'm expecting a use of the Skies of Arcadia IP.

perfectly fine response considering how incessant pc port beggars are

Pretty much. That was a great response.

PC Ports?

oh-wait-youre-serious-let-me-laugh-even-harder_t269x200.jpg

I really like this guy.

I'm so glad that people want more Catherine! I love this game, it is one of the best games of the last generation, imo. I hope they try anther non-rpg. Catherine 2 be would mind blowing!

I'd love another Catherine-like game but there's no way in hell that's happening in 2016, or even 2017 probably. Pretty much everyone who made Catherine's been working on Persona 5 for the past few years.

We don't know that do we? It seems Atlus team members aren't really forced to go on one game (cf #FE).

At the very least, Persona 3, Persona 4, Catherine, and Persona 5 were all developed in a row with little overlap (Catherine development started as P4 development was wrapping up), and Katsura Hashino's never directed multiple new games at once to my knowledge.

At least one staff member said she wrapping up her work on Persona 5 during Q1 2015. Assuming you mean a new IP specfiically by P Studio—even though P5 ended up being delayed—I wouldn't be certain another game of theirs hasn't been in pre-development for a while now.

I've looked through the current issue of Famitsu three times, searching for where this interview could be, but I can't find it. I must be missing something, but you'd think an interview like this wouldn't be hidden within the pages.

Do we know which Atlus teams are free to be working on something unannounced?

I was under the impression that the SMTIV team was working on Final, the Devil Survivor team was working on #FE, the Persona team was working on Persona 5, and the Etrian team was working on main and spin-offs titles,
and the Trauma Center team was tending to their gravestones.

How many employees are free to be working on anything new?

Could be part of the Q&A on page 117?

Or they could have gotten confused with Dengeki? I noticed there were a few quotes from Atlus devs in there, although Naoto Hiraoka didn't seem to be one of them.

Nah, 117 is strictly about the Vanillaware composer.

PlayStation Dengeki instead of Famitsu would make sense, though, since the full interview is supposed to be going up on the Japanese PlayStation Blog in a bit. Guess I gotta check that one out, too...

Well, it's a bit more complicated than 1 team to 1 project at a time, but given the presumed scale of their respective projects, it would indeed lead one to think that until now, the main focus of the teams has indeed been:

1. P Studio -> Persona 5
2. Etrian Odyssey Team -> Etrian Odyssey V
3. Team Maniax -> Shin Megami Tensei IV Final
4. Devil Survivor Team -> Genei Ibun Roku #FE

However, again, it doesn't really operate that way. P Studio worked on Persona 4: Dancing All Night, which shipped last year, after all. Break Record was released last year, and Etrian Mystery Dungeon as well (though, that one was a collaboration with Spike Chunsoft doing the heavy lifting).

Given that P5 and EOV are at the end of their development cycles, SMT IV Final's was done in December 2015, and Genei Ibun Roku #FE has been done since November 2015 at the latest, there are definitely at least a couple of unannounced titles that would be in active development right now.

I'm not particularly familiar with the teams at Atlus, so I went through the games that I know are released/releasing soon. I suppose they might be referring to unannounced updated ports or remasters that only take a fraction of the resources than a new game would.

Are there any games we're expecting to be announced?

Smt ps2 classics on ps4.
Also Smt V on ps4..... If only. I really want a new nocturne type game, gameplay was just too good.

I honestly can't see them not taking advantage of using the assets from the Persona 5 demons to make new SMT games on consoles.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Arent they using real demons as enemies also? Instead of using generic shadow enemies. That'll make it easier to just port the assets to another game.

Realistically (talking Japan only):

Unannounced Titles
  1. Devil Survivor 3 or new IP Battle Royale style game
  2. Shin Megami Tensei mainline spin-off (studio collab.)
  3. Either a Persona remake or a Persona collection
  4. Persona spin-off
Additionally, Atlus did address the possibility of a musou Persona or SMT game, stating that they would like to work on one. They had also stated that they would consider a Persona 3 Dancing if P4D's sales were good (which they were), and Kazuhisa Wada recently stated that they were considering Persona 4 Arena Ultimax ver. 2.00 for home consoles.

Our hunch was right, by the way. Whoever got this furage was mistaken: the Hiraoka interview is from PlayStation Dengeki (page 85), not Famitsu. I was searching all over the place when it was the wrong magazine all along.

It really depends if a company wants to go on board for PC ports. Namco Bandai, Square Enix, Capcom are already on board. Sega only partially because Atlus games have yet to be ported, same with Falcom. Falcom went on PC then stopped after Trails in the Sky TC. Dunno if they're going back but they seem primarily focused on consoles and mobile (since that's where their Japanese players are really are).

From an interview with NF's president last year

(With the recent releases of Gurumin and Ys VI, six of Nihon Falcom's PC games are now available to English audiences through Steam. As a whole, how well have your English Steam games sold compared to your more recent English PlayStation releases?

To be honest, we were surprised to see that many of our titles enjoyed better sales volume on Steam then PlayStation. There are some titles that did way better than when sold in Japan as packaged goods on the PlayStation; there are some titles that are worthwhile businesses based just on their North American Steam sales. Suffice it to say, we are very aware of Steam.)

Xseed has continued to bring NF games to steam, Y's AoN and TitS: SC both came out last year with other titles on the way

From what it looks like they're using demons and shadows as enemies.

Aware is one thing but releasing new PC/ports games is another thing. Xseed is just basically translating their works which were released waaaaaaaay back. Xseed is bringing Xanadu Next over though. Maybe Zwei and Zwei 2 next.

Also Ys I & II Chronicles was apparently the last PC game they released: December 24, 2009. The PC ports of Ao/Zero no Kiseki was ported by an overseas company, not Falcom themselves, plus the game is only available in the Chinese language.

Just a thought, What platform do you think Atlus would release the next SMT on?

Do you think they could make a spin-off on PS4 and make SMT 5 on the next Nintendo platform or PS4 as well?

On topic though I hope this means a new Catherine game, or at the very least Atlus bringing their titles to PS4 through the PS2. Would be a great way to spend time until Persona 5 comes out.

Can already imagine Persona 3-4 with trophies and maybe Nocturne or Rule of Rose? if they own that title.

What it could potentially mean is a (hopefully) updated port of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax with all DLC for current Gen (PS4/maybe X1?)

Well if they're not too tied to handhelds for mainline SMT, a SMT5 would be for PS4 and possibly (probably?) the NX.

Then hopefully they see a benefit to releasing some kind of SMT spinoff also on these consoles...a sequel or a new series.

Zero no Kiseki did get a japanese PC release in 2013. I believe it was based on the chinese port.
But yeah, they have stated that their commitment moving forward is on PS4 and Vita, despite noting solid steam sales a couple times in the past.
