AnimeGAF, anybody here got any recommendations for manga series that might not have been adapted to an anime or released outside of Japan and that are very character-focused? I'm talking stuff such as Kokoro Connect or the Monogatari series, since I'd really like to get me some more raw manga for learning more Japanese while enjoying a good story, but don't know a thing about manga.

Ideally, I'd like to pick up a series that isn't overly long and isn't old enough to give me trouble spotting its volumes at various Book Offs. New series that are still being printed would be okay, as long as they aren't still new enough that I'd be getting a volume or two at best.

I almost picked up Re:Life at a Book Off until I began wondering which manga volume I should begin on to follow up on whatever happens after the final anime episode, but the internet wasn't helpful since everyone kept referencing the web manga chapter numbers, which coupled with that Book Off having those manga wrapped meant I had no way to know which ones to get, so I ended up postponing it.

CardCaptor Sakura - Ep. 6
I think this is a good point to share my thouhts on this show.
So far it was all pretty typical monster of the week stuff, but the anime handles it pretty damn well.
Each episode had different card for Sakura to fight and the resolutions were pretty creative.

Smile Precure - Ep. 6
All the preucre are gathered and all the minor villains made an appearance.
So far I like Peace and March the most (march mostly for her character design).
I'm a big fan of the Fairy Tale theme , espcially the villains.

I guess I'm putting off Arakawa S2 for a while but hey, I get to watch an early 2000s show!

The poignant atmosphere and tone are what got my attention first and foremost which is something I adore and it also reminds me of Haibane Renmei. This tone is juxtaposed with beautiful imagery and much like good anime should, it relies on images and sounds to relay the situation and set the mood. I can see why Hosanna suggested this.

I like how I could hear the creaking of the chair over the slightest movement, I don't think there was a "need" to add that but that sort of had its subtle effect and added to the serious tone.

The setting speaks of a government organization that cyberizes, brainwashes and trains young girls as assassins - they apparently have to be young to be a part. I'm not keen on prodding that aspect of it but I can say that a secret government group of assassins is something I can go with for sure. The story revolves around one such girl that had been subject to a violent trauma on the verge of death until the government steps in and saves her to use her as an assassin for their organization. Her partner, an agent pities her and chooses her in hope that he can be a mental solace for her, likewise she grows an attachment towards him and a sense of adoration, relentlessly following his orders. Unfortunately, the emotional attachment they have could be detrimental to the nature of their work which is what the show makes clear - this is the part I am a bit apprehensive about but much of it depends on how the show handles it and takes it from this point on. I am apprehensive because it feels just wrong to get an emotionally vulnerable person involved in critical work like the one they are involved in. It could makes sense if only the girl was like that but I'd imagine a government secret agent was more than capable.

Arakawa Under the Bridge 12-13 END

Hm, this was a very good ride. Not entirely conclusive in what it hinted but I am satisfied with what I saw.
[/URL].

S2 seems to be centered more on Nino's mystery but I'm only in the middle so I can't say whether it gets anywhere. Glad you enjoyed it !

Haven for us

One of the more memorable OP songs for me.

3 days into week 1, nothing I've cared for besides Natsume Yuujinchou and I wasn't crazy for the first episode.

Watch Stray Dogs 13 or never ever dare call yourself a mafia loving dog again.

Also the details in this episode are crazy. I didn't even notice this at first.

Me neither, funny stuff.

Flip Flappers 01

I dunno, from production standpoint this is about what I expected, though maybe with less flashy action but writing wise it did nothing for me. And too boot, yet another genki-shy girl combo doesn't tickle my fancy very much. Hopefully limbs will be shed, brains will be fried and all manner of
series appropriate
edge will descend upon us soon. Ku Klux clan guys with an army of cyborgs seem like a promising startpoint I guess.

ED is marvelous though.

Umm, that was quite the experience, lol. I love how they call out and label the special moves like they do in Twin Star Excorcists. This was a lot more fun and a lot less ecchi than I thought it would be. At least nudity wise... The yuri potential is through the roof as seen through the original meeting with the Blond #1 scorer..... Hopefully, they keep this as a clean and fun ecchi series.....

That is saying the least! Specific examples?
It takes so much time to elaborate on. It's annoying and nobody will find it interesting because these sound like pointless slights.

Early in the episode you get flat head on characters in different spaces as they assemble for a picture in a way that is just really dull visually...and when two characters finally interact outside their own frame you get a zoom out. Like seriously who does this?
And immediately after the zoom out it is just a zoom in on each character to deliver the line, bad enough on its own but there is not even symmetry to their reaction shots.
Then when they scan over the picture taken it comes as four separate overlapping cuts that each show a corner of the picture before the full zoom out. It is the least interesting solution imaginable for the problem of the full picture not having easy to read information.

The image is just very flat most of the time. As a point of comparison something like Hyouka regularly sets its characters at different levels of depth even if they are not the focal point, but Sound Euph Show just takes a very dull angle on most scenes, breaking to shots that almost feel illogical that provide limited perspective on the environment or who is there. It is very rare for Euphonium's close ups to provide extra context inside the frame. This is especially noticeable in the scenes waiting at the station or on the train, where we get very fixed perspectives as though the staff is working with a limited physical set.

Just as a general example of what is good here is Hyouka where you get frames that stack and arrange themselves to convey extra information by using depth, or just something simple like having a van pull up to them while they are waiting:
Even past the basic fundamentals Euphonium so regularly misses, I don't feel that its peaks are very worthwhile either. There really is not a lot of striking visual imagery here, or any eye for highlighting the tone or the story with strong perspective. Given how weak the source material is for the first two episodes the show just flounders.

He is the hero harem protagonists deserve.

Exactly.

a breath of fresh air in an industry of blushing red faces and sexually embarrassed males. Makoto fully embraces his role as a male MC and won't stop until he gets his. Truly a man among boys.

So that was... more melancholic than the hype had led me to believe it would be. Lots of contrasting colors and generally crazy animation. There were a lot of hints as to the main story and what's really going on, but things just sort of happened for now. Cocona is the more reserved type, but her facial expressions say a lot. Papika does the genki things. I'm not overly impressed by this yet, but it's certainly interesting. ED is amazing though.

I'm all for him getting his, but at least break things up with Kotonoha first

At this point I'm not even rooting for best girl, she's just as shitty

Something about the fight scenes in Keijo! gave me a really nasty headach.
Obviously I'm not going to watch anymore of it.

Maturity, bitches.
Every time I read the name Flip Flappers I keep thinking it's about that one game in Beat the Beat (Rhythm Tengoku Wii) with the seals.

Alight AnimeGaf, what are some must watch Horror animes? I've realized I haven't really watched many and most that claim they are horror are not really "horror". I'm looking for something straight up scary where horror is the main genre.

Off the top of my head is Shiki and Higurashi

Have you watched Shiki yet?

They brought it up yesterday and I was just thinking about it. Instead of starting Monte Cristo next week, we can put that one off until November and instead starting Monday and ending on Halloween, we can do the 22 episodes of Shiki as a Let's Watch"

Anyone interested in that?

Ghost Hunt was a pretty enjoyable series with some creepy moments.

This might be the dumbest sport I've seen yet. Whoever invented it needs a pay raise. Looks to be the good type of stupid and funny, so probably worth a watch.

I wonder why some anime (Magic of Stella, Girlish Number) get delayed simulcasts, where others get the simulcasts on the day they air?

Jeez, All Out is 25 episodes? I would normally maybe check it, but between Yuri on Ice and Haikyuu I don't know if I feel like watching another sport anime.

Wow, better than expected! It's not a happy go lucky anime, but it's not all about despair either. It's something really, really unique and it works. It seems like it can have some super adorable and cheerful moments but it can also easily have some super disturbing scenes. I think this weird theme is rather fitting to such a weird show. The concept of "down the rabbit hole" is prominent and I'm sure this is just the start.

Animation was fantastic. Between this, Yuri and Euphonium, this season is truly blessed. Looking forward to more of this!

Btw, I think I've found my ED of the year... After such a good episode, I didn't expect the best part of it right at the end.

This is everything I wanted. Oh my, god this is my AOTS if it continues like this. It's so stupid yet in universe totally serious. And oh god, the special attacks. This is the best thing ever. Anime is saved. And yes, I am serious, I totally love this show, oh god. The opening already killed me but holy shit when the actual battle started.

Butt Guillotine.

Attack on fart-powered dead fish with legs (or otherwise known as GYO)

~70min OVA by Ufotable. Have been meaning to watch this for a while. Thanks thread for reminding me.
Yeah, this certainly is an adaption of a Junji Itou work.
Disgusting, creepy, disturbing and weird as fuck. And it escalates even further.
Recommended if you want to watch something disgusting, creepy, disturbing and weird as fuck that escalates even further.

9/10 but I'm probably biased. (The manga is most likely better though)

I watched a bunch of the new stuff today like flip flappers but the very best was really All Out!!

All Out!! 1

This first episode was outstanding! The music was perfect in every single scene and it help bring out the emotions in every moments.

The god damn animation! Whenever muscles were involved we could feel the impacts. It was amazing! It was beautiful! It was phenomenal!

The art in the scenery was also excellent. We had beautiful backgrounds throughout the whole thing.

The character interaction and dynamic are all great too. All the comedy moment were perfect and all made me laugh greatly.

As for the characters themselves I think it will be good. First the designs are great and this is greatly enhance by their personalities. Gion is also my favourite protagonist fron the new series.

All in all I greatly enjoyed it. More people should check it out. Mainly if you like sports anime!

Keijo!!!!!!!! Episode 1:

So this is the end result of combining shonen sports with somebody's niche fetish porn and it isn't the worst thing I have seen this season. It isn't downright terrible like Triage X was but I wouldn't call it good either. Still, this is the show that everybody is going to watch and not talk about for obvious reasons.
