I had the PSP version of Dracula X...call me crazy, but wasn't the original game on the disc as well? I know I unlocked SotN, but I think I remember playing the original, too, which looked a hundred times better than the muddy remake.

When all is said and done, though, I just can't get into Castlevania. I really want to -- the games look and sound amazing -- but it's this weird combination of action/platforming that does not sit well with me. I just find the platforming reprehensible. Your slow movement, tiny jump, limited angle of attack, the stairs (omg the stairs). I see the appeal of the slower paced, more considered action game where you play a normal guy who's badass with a whip, but personally I just prefer the freedom of movement afforded to me in games like Shinobi III. That's right, ninjas.

You are right, original Dracula X is on the DX Chronicles disc, it's a hidden unlockable in Stage 4. I'd probably play it that way if I could play DXC on my Vita, but alas, Chronicles never came to PSN in Australia.
Plus it was an excuse to play with this 'new' CRT :p

I hear you. I guess you just need to be ok with the movement rule set that Castlevania allows. If you can master it you will have no problems getting through the stages.

The stairs are less of an issue in this game and Super CV IV, but yes, they can still be frustrating.

You're not kidding about the remake being muddy visually. It's like Konami went out of their way to ruin the original game's memorable look.

Having a hard time understanding your point. I was born in January 1986, so I was almost 6 when the SNES was under the Christmas tree in 1991 :)

And people didn't just play games during their release window back then. There was no commonly used internet and we just played what we could rent from a store or borrow from a friend.

Like Yesboss said, this is a zone of positivity. No worries if you don't want to discuss stuff or listen to the podcast. Different strokes for different folks.

I love doing the podcast, if others can enjoy listening as well then that is a nice bonus!

I'm the same age as you (Feb 86'), and it was the same with my family, I played the games well after launch but that was irrelevant to my experience. In fact the first system we had was the Atari 2600, playing crystal castles was my first gaming memory. We then moved on the NES in what must have been like 1990, and played that until like 93' when we got a mega drive (which we swapped every couple of months for a friends SNES). The N64 was the first console that we got at launch. The consoles before the N64 were just much more condensed, but I still played all the big titles from each generation.

Just up to the JSR podcast, will listen to it tonight. I really love the podcast though guys, the formula is very relaxed and informal, which gives off a personal vibe, I especially love the personal experiences surrounding the games.

Are any of you guys into JRPG's, I'd love to hear an episode about SNES or PS1 JRPG's? Or maybe a Banjo Kazooie episode? ;)

Also, on a last note, Lords of Shadow is awesome and, hands down, has one of THE best OST in gaming. Period. Real talk.

Great episode - ended up downloading Dracula X on the Wii Virtual Console after listening. I had 1800 Wii Points I had to use somehow that aren't transferrable to Wii U so I figured it was time! Even just the beginning few stages have reminded me how terrible I am at Castlevania games in general. o_O

So glad you liked it! I am bad at the CV games too, but this is by far the fairest of the series, from what I have played.

Does the Wii virtual console version have save states like the Wii U VC? It's been so long that I can't remember and I was only able to get through Super Castlevania IV by abusing them in the last couple of stages.

The game has it built in. So it should at least save your progress like on the PC engine.

If you wanna go baller grab one of the Analogue Interactive wooden sticks. A bit pricey but all great Seimitsu parts and fantastic build and form factor. Here is mine:

I am super pumped to talk Milon with you guys this weekend (only a day after our own F-Zer live event). It is a weird and fascinating game from my childhood. Please, open minds and open hearts!

Going to be a lot of fun, I am not worried about that one bit. Starting my play through tomorrow.

I am going to be interviewing the person that makes the Omega CMVS for a Gaiden episode of Back in my Play. Let me know if you guys have any questions for him or about the Neo Geo.

This just showed up! Just awaiting my AES sticks:

Looking forward to see how it looks via SCART through the XRGB Framemeister

I will be interviewing the creator of the OMEGA on Saturday as a bonus episode. We need to do another Neo Geo episode!!!

That was a blast. I'm wrapping up the RFN live show recording with F-Zero X/GX and will include a link to this BiMP episode in the show notes.
