Backwards compatibility is garbage

And I still play the GTA 3 set of games constantly.

Hell, a little while ago I decided to start a new file in Zelda Link's Awakening just for the hell of it. It seems I go through A Link to the Past once a year these days. Some games are timeless classics that will always be worth playing again.

Not to mention all the old-ass games I still ain't played. Shit, there are 8 and 16-bit classics I still plan to buy on Virtual Console one day because I never got to play them. Same goes for PS1 games, PS2 games, and a bunch of PC classics.

I don't need BC. I would rather see them increase the specs of the console with that money. And I don't think it's necessary for a console to have this feature, in order to succeed. There is a small but vocal minority which wants such a feature, but I am sure as soon as the new console is out, those people will forget this pretty fast. It's nice to have but really not needed.

Ten bucks says OP is 13 and his first game was COD 4.

Any takers?

Why don't you try to bring up some arguments instead of personally attacking him? You know, that's what grown-ups usually do?

BC is awesome especially when you can have 1 system connecting and continue your gaming experience. I find myself randomly wanting to play old PS1 and 2 games and love having the option to do so with my PS3 without having to pull the old system out of the box/storage.

Exactly. Many great games are replayable. So great you want to replay them. In fact I prefer games that keep me coming back. And I'm not talking about multiplayer. Single player content.

Yep. Many of my favorite games are actually relatively short singleplayer games that are so well-polished they remain fun even after the 12th completion. Just like some movies are timeless classics.

I think that as hardware get's better though, software emulation will probably get easier and easier. For all we know the PS4 might achieve straight PS2 software emulation, which would instantly make that whole library worthwhile again and available for Sony to just throw up onto PSN at relatively little expense.

I have a friend who won't stop talking about how he must purchase a refurbished PS3 that has backwards compatibility. You know, so he can play all of those super old PS1 games that he doesn't actually own...

I understand the reasoning behind wanting it for people that actually own the games. But there are also emulators. Some of which actually enhance the games significantly over what you would get through the console.

Mario World
Mario 64
Smash Bros. series
Contra series
GTA series
Sonic (the good games)
Elder Scrolls
Star Fox 64

And that's just to name a few of some of the games I personally enjoy to replay.

With emus and roms, and VC, and the fact I never sell my consoles or games I'll always have a way to play my favorites.

Yeah, for having a 360 hooked up to a CRT.

I hook it up to the HDTV in another room that I use for my PS3 and Wii U sometimes, but I play a lot of music and fighting games on it mostly, so no lag is really nice to have. Plus, I get to play to in bed and be lazy. Hah.

I also don't really care much if I'm playing in HD or not, so I'm fine with it. S-Video gets the job done just fine for me, and looks pretty great considering. I make a bigger deal out of having 5.1 surround sound than whether or not I'm playing in HD.

And yes, the CRT TV in that post I linked to is different from the one I posted in this thread. I hadn't bought the flat-screen one yet when I posted that.

I love my DS, I have plenty of games left to play and finished on it (Dragon Quest 4, 5, 6 & 9, The World Ends with You, Retro Game Challenge, Radiant Historia, Mega Man Zero Collection etc etc) and I also have plenty of games that I want to play on my 3DS (Fire Emblem Awakening, Super Mario 3D Land, Etrian Odessy 4 in a few weeks as well as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate). It would suck if I had to carry around both systems but its freaken awesome that I have one system to play all my DS/3DS games on.

I love backwards compatibility, it meant during the first few months of its life I had lots to play on my 3DS while I waited for new games, same with the Wii when that launched, the WiiU as well. I really don't get why someone would think that just because I still have the older system would mean I wouldn't want backwards compatibility.

All ps3s have ps1 compatibility.

I don't really care about it. I used to think it would be handy but I have no problems using older hardware and swapping some plugs if I need to.

his was more scathing, but yours is just as dismissive a post - you're shoving any of us who value BC into a corner, then saying we don't really care about it because new games show up and are infinitely more awesome, we just like bitching. if that was a grown-up post, it wasn't a particularly good one.

This is a joke/bait thread right?

  • Consoles break. (Especially the more recent ones.)
  • Some of us don't want to cram 15 different consoles into our entertainment center. Not only is it a space issue, but the wiring can be a fire hazard as well.
  • Sometimes, we want to re-experience a game, or play an older game that we didn't have a chance to catch the first time around.
  • Just cause something's new, doesn't mean it's better than what's older. I'll take games like Tomba, Suikoden II, Killer 7, etc. over yet another COD or AssCreed in a heartbeat. It's not even a contest.

It's also especially annoying to see Sony drop the ball with BC for PS3. They made BC a core feature of the Playstation brand with PS2. Turning around and messing it all up with the very next console doesn't exactly instill a lot of faith in consumers, and frankly feels like a bait and switch.

Why don't you just keep the system you own the game on?

I hear people crying again that the next gen systems better be backwards compatible but apart from a few hardcore gamers, I don't know of many people who are still playing fifa 95 or rushing to get he from work to play pong.

Games evolve and so do gamers. Once I have played a game once I'm pretty much done. Show me the next game.

Does anyone seriously consider it an essential feature of their next gen console? Just leave your ps3 plugged in for a little longer. I'm sure by your 40th play through, you will have had your fill of uncharted.

I'm super late here, but this is just such a strange position to take. It's an issue of convenience. Some people don't like to have ten consoles out at once. Some people might want to take advantage of upscaling features or other positive benefits. Some people would like to sell their old console to pay for a new one without losing the ability to have that hardware.

I know this is something that the modern gamer can't really fathom, especially since we have a group of people here on GAF who care only about graphics and horsepower, but there's a pretty large group of people who enjoy playing older games.

It's not a position and I have since clarified that I don't think it is garbage but I just think the console warriors that dismiss a system because it doesn't have backwards compatibility are just as delusional (as my OP lol).

It is a convenient thing to have but I downloaded a few "classics" like the original wipeout and cool boarders when they were released on PS3 and they were not fun at all. The nostalgia was great but they looked and played terribly. I found no need to continue playing them.

It is a good idea to have BC for the previous console gen as many have stated in this thread but long term, I think it isn't really necessary. And as I have also pointed out, streaming services will probably allow you to play almost any game on any system in the near future so chill out with the requesting of BC on your new console!! :P

And to those saying I must be 13, I have been gaming for a long time. I used to have to wait 30 minutes for a tape player to load up games on my C64 and I played Pong on my Atari 2600.
