Batman Arkham City New Game+ confirmed

It's definitely the best year in gaming since 2007. GAF's Game of the Year might be the hardest call ever.

Calling it now, though: I'll be damn surprised if the following games aren't GAF's Top 10 (alphabetical order here):

Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Batman: Arkham City
Battlefield 3
Dark Souls
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Portal 2
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
The Witcher 2
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

Most of these could easily end up being GAF's GOTY based on previous years and the love they get. Amazing year.

Though I really shouldn't be counting out Super Mario 3D Land. The Mario Galaxy games are amazing and GAF loves them. Same team here, after all. Pokemon Black and White will get some love from Pokegaf, as well (I know it'll be in MY top 10).

How did Rocksteady get so good at this so fast?
Funny you should mention this. I officially gave up on gaming "journalism" or any potential of it the year Arkham Asylum came out and everywhere I looked people were talking about how good the game was, but no one wrote the article I cared about: where did these guys come from? We got top ten lists, and more stories about gamers with disabilities, and stories of the industry's inflated sense of importance regarding all sorts of other things...

I mean, you expect a game of that quality from maybe half a dozen studios? It clearly wasn't some fluke of "oh, hey... people like this basic idea we built a game around," which I would argue happens with many games today. Arkham Asylum was polished genius of the highest caliber. There was no reason to expect Rocksteady to deliver something like. Moreover, how the hell did they even get to make an original Batman game in the first place?

These are the kinds of things I'd like to know and read/hear about in the gaming press. To clarify; I'm not saying there weren't any articles about this, just none that I saw at the time. And I'm pretty "involved" in the "gaming community," or whatever. If someone could point me to a good piece, podcast, etc about this topic, I'd be much obliged.

Sounds boring, post another screenshot gallery and... crack a light joke at one of them

yeah, agreed.

I'd love to read a story about Eidos Montreal. Deus Ex Human Revolution is technically their first game, but the team, at least on the 'making of', mentioned past games from other companies. Whatever the case, they came in and did an incredible job.

Geoff Keighley has done good stuff with "The Final Hours" stories. MGS2, Portal 2, HL2, Prince of Persia, etc.

I think you're going to be surprised. There are so many great games this year, and some are of the sort I don't follow at all so I can't judge how much GAF as a whole loves them. But I'm going to say Gears 3 will definitely be in the top 10 (as much as I HATE Gears), and Deus Ex will not be. Also think Assassin's Creed (especially featuring Ezio) may have passed its prime, at least for GAF.

The only games I would guarantee to be in the top 10 are:

Batman
Dark Souls
Gears 3
Portal 2
Edler Scrolls
Legend of Zelda
Uncharted 3

Every one of the games you listed has a chance to be there as well, but I would find it hard to guarantee trumping these gems;

Bastion (Downloadable counts, y'know)
Bulletstorm (probably not, but GAF did really like it. Including me.)
Dead Space 2 (no idea how GAF felt, but others loved it)
LA Noire (Blech. But whatever)
LittleBigPlanet 2 (IT WILL BE A TRAVESTY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER IF THIS GAME IS NOT RECOGNIZED!)
Mortal Kombat (same as Dead Space; no idea, but others went nuts for this one)
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ( " " " " " " )
Rage (I think will be a surprise hit)
Torchlight 2 (GAF loves to support good games at good prices on PC)
and of course, MW3. I don't think it will make it, as I think it's reached the burn-out point. But if it's damn good, why not?

But yep, this will be a great year for games. It kind of seems like every year is better than the last. Not sure which one is my favorite, it'd be hard to pick. I mean, 08 never gets mentioned, but it has three of my favorite games this generation of which I'm not sure we'll ever see a true sequel for: Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia, and Valkyria Chronicles. And those were all like within a month of each other!

Despite anticipating it myself (I've had it pre-ordered for months), I blanked out on Gears 3, yeah. I guess it might be more likely to see that game in the top 10 than Assassin's Creed: Revelation this year if only because of Ezio fatigue (I personally can't wait for more since those games are only getting better).

And yeah, I love and I know a great majority of GAF loves Bastion, Dead Space 2, and MvC3 (those first two being in my personal top 5 of the year so far), I'll be surprised (pleasantly) if they break top 10.

I guess we'll see.

Back to praising the greatness that is Arkham City in this thread.

oh my god this game is literally going to be the pinnacle of the Batman franchise, across ALL mediums. This will be better than any of the comics, or the movies, or TAS. It is taking everything that was ever great in the Batman universe and cramming it all into one glorious little disc

Why isn't anyone talking about the first part of the interview?
They are basing each boss battle on the super powers and fighting styles of each villain, and seem to be doing an excellent job of it. Mr. Freeze learns your move each time you use it on him through the technology in his suit, so you can't use the same attack twice. The Riddler tries to frustrate you with his riddles, and the Joker encounters are "more brutal" than the other fights . There was also a shot of The Penguin shooting a grenade launcher.

And a harder and actually thought-out New Game+, presumably also with the option to play through the game your second time in one of those sweet ass alt costumes?

This is seriously gonna give Skyward Sword some competition for my GOTY, which is saying something since Skyward Sword will probably be the pinnacle of its respective franchise too

What a glorious year to be huge fans of both Batman and Zelda

@_@ glorious...

Batman:AC is right up there with my most anticipated titles of the year, and this is one of the best years in gaming in a long time. And it's saying something, with juggernauts like Uncharted 3, Skyrim, etc. coming out.

I LOVED Arkham Asylum. Best comic book game, bar none. And they seem to be actually upgrading on that experience. FFUUUUU- can't wait.

Rocksteady- one of the few companies left who just get it.

Since Deus Ex is out now this is my 2nd most wanted game the rest of the year, and with Skyrim continuing to disappoint it's getting close to 1.

Do you guys think this will appear on Steam? Or am I better off getting it from GMG at 33$.
The original is on Steam so I'm sure it'll show up there.

The question is whether or not they'll adopt Steamworks. It's a good sign that they're not going with Games for Windows Live.

I'ma let you finish this thread, but Batman:AC will be the greatest Batman game of all time.

Just finished week ago my second playthrough on Asylum and I felt I was missing something extra for the whole run. Kudos to whom ever made decision for NG+.

It'll probably go up on Steam within the next 2-3 weeks, it's still a good month and a half away from release.

No one knows if it'll be Steamworks though. Usually we know by now so I don't think it will be.
