Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

So, anyone ever used DL Gamer before? They currently have a voucher for -45% off, for a total of $32.99 which is a steal. I have no idea how trustworthy they are though.

dude thats above average...

Some of the best action adventure games take about 10 hours to beat.

The fact that its 12 hours of story (I'm assuming it isn't counting the gameplay) is more than fine.

Its only 12 hours long? That is what I wanted to know how long the game was. Seems shorter than the other 2 for sure.

Dammit Batman, why do you have to be so good?

Will have to wait until I finish Witcher 3 and can get this on sale.

People are complaining that it's only 12 hours? dang.

12 hours for an action game like this is fantastic. Heck it will be a great time waister until God of War 3 remastered for PS4 & forza 6 for the Xbox One comes out in mid july.

Does the 12 hours just story and nothing else? Cause I'd be fine with that, but if that includes side quests, would be a bummer.

Here in Ireland this game is €75 ($85) and that's just your standard edition. Considering how fragmented with DLC it already is, I can not but laugh at your post. So, yep: LoL!

Yo... any reason for your aggressiveness?

In any case, I'm on PhanPhare's (and everyone else's) side when they argue that 12 hours is a good campaign length. Actually, my preference is closer to the 10-ish hour side. Although I'm a huge fan of The Last of Us, I thought that campaign was a bit too long.

Game unlocks on Tuesday.

980ti arrives on Tuesday, with code.

12 hrs of story content is short, whichever way you want to spin it.

If this is a straight line corridor shooter with 6 hours gameplay and 6 hours cutscenes.. maybe. This is an open world most will not finish at the 12 hour mark.

Gamespot 7
- Forced use of the Batmobile puts a damper on fun and freedom
- Ham-fisted dialogue and predictable reveals damage the story
- Monotonous encounters and mediocre boss fights hurt the second half
(PS4 code)

I 100% appreciate and respect the effort DrBo42 put into compiling this info from all over the web, but man that synopsis is selling Kevin VanOrd's GameSpot review short. He had a LOT of really good things to say about Arkham Knight.

The way it's presented here passes it off as being way saltier than it was in reality.

It's longer. I believe Arkham city could be finished in like eight hours. Story content only. I'm pretty sure Asylum could be finished in like eight as well. Again, story content only.

In fact if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure the story for City was actually shorter than its predecessor.

So undecided on whether to get this or Witcher 3

I think bang(kapow!)-for-your-buck definitely goes to Witcher 3. That game just has an insane amount of actual quality content. This'll be more if you want to be the Batman and get your fix of justice being doled out, while Witcher 3 is about being a monster hunter in a harsh world. Batman looks amazing and most likely will be amazing, while Witcher 3 is definitely amazing. You could honestly probably flip a coin and not pick a bad game between the two.

You're right, I forgot to put in the other column. Was one of the first few I put in. I'll fix. Thanks for calling it out.

Proof Gamespot hate Batmobile.

I guess you're right. Considering that allegedly tedious and unskippable batmobile gameplay is a good chunk of said 12hrs story mode, it's actually probably too long.

Thanks, man.

I really wasn't trying to come down on you as I know how laborious the whole process of putting this stuff together is.

I just know that if I hadn't watched/read the review myself, I'd just blow that review off as a jaded industry guy with an axe to grind or something.

I am staying away form reading reviews for spoilers but did they have access to the exclusive PS4 missions? I am swaying towards getting the PS4 version over PC right now just for the extra content and that fact that I am waiting on Pascal launch.

Oh really? I was going to do them anyway, but that's kinda cool to give you something after you do them all.

Yup:

To unlock the true end of the game (hinted at heavily during the opening cutscene), you’ll have to hit practically every completion percentage – so that includes clearing every checkpoint, unlocking every Riddler trophy and hunting down all the miscellaneous villains that have run amok in Gotham this night. And your reward is jaw-dropping.

Arkham Origins, Asylum and City were all pretty short. Story wise each was 8 hours max at best for me. Hopefully this one is longer, but I'll wait until I complete it to see as for some reasons it seems game lengths are exaggerated. I don't exactly rush through my games either so that isn't the reason.

I kind wish this game had a day and night cycle, now I get batman usually isnt out during the day however imagine during the night you gather clues, beat up bad guys etc. then when dawn breaks you head back to the batman cave let bruce rest a little bit then the next half you spend in front of batmans super computer being a detective, solving puzzles, find more clues, fix up the batmobile, add on extra features, build new gadgets or fix them.

I want it to be compelling. Reviews portray it as a tacked on weak element. Combat with it has looked uninteresting since the first video. I don't know what you don't understand.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious on how it could be better.

This game's really tempting, though I'm not quite finished with Witcher 3 yet. The bat mobile stuff doesn't seem appealing at all to me so I wonder if I'll end up agreeing with Gamespot's opinion if I actually do pick this up.

Because it's the better game :p

I can't be the only one who feels MGS3 is one of the top games of all time...

I'd think you'd run into some major pacing problems with that kind of setup. Not to mention it heavily interferes with the immediacy of the situation Gotham is in.

Haven't played it so there's only so much I can say about it. The batmobile combat just doesn't look interesting. It looks very repetitive without much introduced to keep it fresh. Looks like they tried to keep a sense of Batman's combos while in the batmobile rather than designing something completely new for it. If I was in charge of designing it I probably would keep it super brief and visceral rather than drawn out. I'd also get Batman himself involved like he ejects out and lands on one of the bigger tanks and gels it while the batmobile continues firing on the others in autopilot etc. Either that or I wouldn't have waves of tanks fighting Batman to begin with.

Not to mention that the entire point of the Arkham games is they take place over the course of one night.

No one knows, since no one has played it. But if what the reviews are saying is true, one way to make it better, is not cramming in boss fights or encounters with tedious wave killing. I mean that doesn't seem fun.

I think the best way to use it, would have been keeping it to getting access to certain areas (like you can only get across a gap using it)..or you need it to blow through certain walls/barriers only using the Batmobile. Using it for unique puzzles (the way other arsenal is). Or you know how City made you go up high on building to LISTEN in on voice chatter. Maybe created something that only could have been done, by traversing the streets (as opposed to being in the air).

I think all those things would have been fine ways to use the Batmobile. Which it seems it does do that, but it also seems they have really unfun/tedious combat sections with it. As well as puzzles that would have been better without it (again, going off reviews).

Batman doesn't do this alone he has a team all helping with the detective stuff. So no day time gameplay, this is Batman!
