Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

So The Witcher 3 is the norm now?

Stop. It's 12 hours of story content. It's not counting all the side quests, riddler challenges, etc. And since when does length determine how good a game is?
12 hrs of story content is short, whichever way you want to spin it.

Great scores, so I'll jump.

I never finished Arkham City, allthough I liked it. It was one of those games the open world in my opinion worked against it. Asylum is one of my favourite games ever because it presents such a great adventure in a tight but believable location. It has awesome pacing, but lots to do on the side as well. In City I just, I don't know. Got sidetracked all the time, and lost the motivation to funnel trough the story because of it. It was the main reason I skipped Origins.

So I'm a bit wary about this one. I would give everything for a Asylum-esque tight adventure. But I can't skip on a seeminly awesome sequel on one of my fav games...

This is me haha. I doubt I'll like it as much as Asylum, but I'll give it a shot.

I was pretty bored of these games after I finished origins, is there anything new/different about this game apart from better graphics and the batmobile?

A 12 hour story campaign is a good length. A few hours is a short game. I'd say anything over 25 hours makes it a long game.

I don't think I'm trying to "spin" it, but then again, I guess appreciation for game length could be relative. I've also spent the last 20 years plowing through games with 8 or so hours of story content, and being completely satisfied in that.

Good stuff! I'm going to try and hold off for the GOTY edition / price cuts. I still haven't finished AC but really enjoyed AA.

ugh, this post

this is why we can't have nice things

Here's something to think about for those who say story mode is 12 hours..

Do you REALLY want a 20+ hour dragging story for something that isn't ..you know a big RPG, but rather a Batman story?

in this case, Less = more.

No, it really isn't. 5 hours of story content is short.

If this follows the other games in the series, it'll take place over the course of one night, so 12 hours is fine.

The side content makes up the rest of the playtime.

The high scores are expected in my opinion. It is a wonderful game and I cannot wait till 6/23.

On a side note, I wonder how well this game runs on PC.

OP note: In summary, the batmobile outside of traversal is just as bland as we thought. Sad. As every single review has been PS4 I'd recommend you wait until someone with the XB1 version reports back before you purchase that version.

Bit of a weird thing to put in my opinion, I'm not in a position to buy it for anything other than Xbox. Unless you're aware of big issues, what's the point? You never heard of refunds?

Same. Hoping for good optimization. Origins ran much better than City, but Rocksteady wasn't involved with that. Lets see how this pans out. Will be a damn shame if it runs like crap.

I don't even need to look at completion time unless it's ridiculously short or ridiculously long. I've grown to hate the word "content" as of recent. if a game is really good then a game is really good. that's what I care about. there are amazing 4 hour games and shit 4 hour games. there are amazing 100 hour games and shit 100 hour games. this move to view games in a more objective fashion is just so off-putting for me personally. it's like people aren't comfortable with their own tastes anymore and can't simply say "I like _______ because it's awesome and I like it," they now have to have objective things to quantify that with.

I think he just meant, in case the X1 version has performance issues. Even though it's your only option to play it on, if it did have really big issues, you might want to wait till they patch it later, or I dunno.

I don't think he meant it maliciously. And you of course don't have to wait even if it did have issues. Totally up to you as a consumer. That said, I'm sure X1 version is fine and won't have any issues. I think he was just saying that since most people are playing it on the PS4 (because it's the leading platform), you might want to wait to hear some impressions of that version first. But totally up to the individual.

It's why I never understood the argument some made against Digital Foundry. Where people would say "what is the point of this, it's just console war blah blah". But I never took it that way. Even if you only have ONE platform, it's still helpful to know what the performance is like. You can ignore the "vs" aspect, and just focus on the data they provide on the performance. And decide if it's something you want to skip at launch. Whether it's worth your $60 in its current state. Just because you only have one platform, doesn't mean you have to buy a game (especially if it has bad performance).

They exist and they expanded on the leaderboard system.

Thanks. I only went through about 4 of the reviews and was disappointed no one mentioned them since I feel they are the best part of the Arkham series.

Those maps are where the combat and stealth systems are allowed to be fully explored and where the player can be the most challenged.

You don't have to take anything I say as gospel. Just a word of caution as we have no idea how it performs.

10 from Polygon? Crazy times...

The open world and side quests are making me pretty excited to play this. I wonder if I can wrap up TW3 by Tuesday...

Spoiler alert:
nope

Exactly. Short game be damned, it's the content progression, the whole package that makes or breaks it.

The only time that matters is how much you're going to put into it.

Hate this bit:

...if you’re just playing the Story mode through to see all those twists and turns in Batman’s darkest night, you’ll be sitting through a lot of car sections.

Love the closing paragraph.

Batman struggles during the Arkham Knight – he’s finally held accountable for his ‘above the law’ attitude – and Rocksteady has masterfully and knowingly deconstructed the man behind the mask with such aplomb, even Alan Moore might give a begrudging nod of approval. This is the best superhero fantasy we’ve ever enacted, and we’re so sad it’s over.

Here in Ireland this game is €75 ($85) and that's just your standard edition. Considering how fragmented with DLC it already is, I can not but laugh at your post. So, yep: LoL!

dude thats above average...

Some of the best action adventure games take about 10 hours to beat.

The fact that its 12 hours of story (I'm assuming it isn't counting the gameplay) is more than fine.

Wasn't a remaster of the Rocksteady games talked about earlier in the year? Seems to have disappeared.

Yes there was, but it hasn't been confirmed or denied yet. I thought it would make sense to release it before Arkham Knight gets released, but apparently not. Now, if it's even coming that is, I hope it'll come in fall 2016 bundled with Arkham Knight and its season pass..... Or would that be wishful thinking?
