So underwhelming. People waited years for Batman and Superman finally going against and then this *g*

Still, I liked that Batman used
Scarecrows fear gas.

that's
kryptonite gas. he also used it on Doomsday

I wasn't aware that IM3 was disliked

Personally

IM1>>IM3>>>>>IM2

Agreed. The destroying of the suits and all of that wasn't his turning his back on Iron Man, it was Stark facing his fears and not burying them with endless suit creations.

That's why there's not the plethora of suits in Ultron. ... Of course, his obsession of dealing with his fears led to almost screwing everything up ...

This gif is doubly-funny because that's Aquaman right there lol

I just got back. Um.

This is how I feel as well.

So, a few weeks ago I went to see Gods of Egypt, because while it looked astoundingly awful, I thought it would head into so bad it's, well, if not good then at least entertaining territory. And that it was - my daughter and I had a hoot at it.

These are the ways Gods of Egypt was a better film than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • It had a semi-coherent narrative through line
  • Characters were allowed to feel a range of emotions, most notably, joy
  • Characters were allowed to look like they were having fun
  • It knew not to take itself too seriously
  • It had better romantic tension between the main couple. Mind you, the romance was awful.
  • The action was shot and edited in a way that you could tell what was going on, and where characters were in relation to one another.
  • The bad guy had clear motivation and goals
Gods of Egypt was the worst big budget movie I'd ever seen at the time, but it was entertaining in spite of itself, or perhaps because of itself. It's now the second worst.

More than anything, BvS: DoJ is utterly joyless. Everything progresses with funereal solemness, even when it's being silly. Everything is just so heavy handed. There's an early shot of Lex Luthor walking down a hallway from behind. It's brightly lit (which is rare), shot from a low angle, in slow motion, his lab coat flowing majestically behind him while loud, deep pounding music portends something Significant happening, though the film has had no time to build up to anything at this point. Nothing about that moment warranted the music, the slow motion, the elevation of a character walking somewhere to a major event. I burst out laughing at this scene - it was just so randomly awful. But it was one of the only times the film was so bad it was actually funny. For the most part, it's simply bad. And that's how most of the movie goes. I squirmed a lot.

Gal Gadot is the only actor allowed to look like she was enjoying herself, a bit, and her character is allowed to elevate her scenes simply with how she carries herself. She's got a deft touch, especially when Wonder Woman is doing her thing. She's the best thing about the movie, IMO. Affleck was good as Batman, and his rage and motivation was really the heart of the film. I'd love to see a stand alone Batman film with him, though with a different director. (Though of course, his Bruce Wayne was not allowed a smidgen of fun. At least Bale looked like he was enjoying himself.)

Two hours in, just when the movie has gotten its first lift of narrative momentum and we're heading into the climax, everything is literally put on hold to run a series of commercials for the future Justice League movie. Just right smack in the middle of things. At least Marvel knew to put their most overt hooks after the credits! It totally kills the forward momentum the movie had going.

The audience I watched it with didn't laugh, cheer or really react once through the film. Credits rolled and people got up and left in silence. The whole movie is a giant, joyless mess.

Yikes.

I'm seeing BvS tomorrow. I'm just hoping for fun

Oh my god, BvS made slightly more than Age of Ultron on opening day.

You people are crazy. Your money could've been used on another movie.

Whatever, it's your money. I'm limiting myself to only a few this year, such as Deadpool, Zootopia, Civil War, Apocalypse, Finding Dory, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Age of Ultron wasn't that hot so I am not to mad.

There are a few fun parts. I genuinely enjoyed about 15 minutes of the 2.5 hours.

The writing is bad but not so bad it's funny, and the worst offender is the editing. There's not really any way to find enjoyment in bad editing that I've found. It's just frustrating.

The more I think about the actual reason Batman and Superman fight, the more stupid it gets. The conflict could have been defused by one of them uttering a single sentence.

Brutal.

My roommate saw BvS last night and told me that he liked it but that it had problems. He also said it was a "weird" movie, when I asked if that was good or bad he just replied that it was just weird weird.

To be fair, I vaguely recall Superman half-assedly saying "Bruce" at one point before they started flying through walls. That's more than enough "talking" IMO, I don't think anyone really cared that Batman and Superman had essentially no real reason to fight each other, amirite?

I can't believe it's been a day and I'm still this irritated; Such an irredeemably awful film. The most positive thing I can say about it is that I didn't hate Wonder Woman/Gal Gadot.

So people shouldn't form their own opinions, and instead only watch films that get good reviews?

By all means, inform your own opinion. I'm just saying, if they make a crap ton of money regardless of quality, then expect the quality of the JL to be around the same. It's like the Transformers series. If it ain't broke (making money), why fix it?

Damn, delivered with Joel like brutality.

This is an important part of that Deadline article about the box office:

According to ComScore PostTrak, which polls throughout the weekend, the word of mouth is great for BvS. Seventy-one percent of Thursday’s crowd gave BvS an excellent or very good grade. Even better news for Warner Bros. after those reviews: 60% of the audience said they would definitely recommend BvS to their friends while 33% said they’ll probably tell them about it. Older males were out in force (no surprise) at 69% guys, 57% over 25. Fifty-one percent saw it in 3D. Twenty-five percent said BvS exceeded their expectations while 60% said the film met their expectations.

It's only going to get 50-60 reviews more max. I think the score is pretty much settled at this point. The only way it can even get to 40%+ is if every single remaining review is positive, and that's not going to happen. Might be time to resurrect the RT prediction thread again.

Do it. The RT predictions will be way off for the most part, but the BO predictions will probably still be ok

I don't think I posted a RT score prediction, but I probably would have gone with low 60s. I was thinking slightly better reception than MoS ahead of the reviews.

I predicted 70%! I was trying to be optimistic even though it looked bad. I desperately wanted this to be the start of something great with DC.

no one anticipated that the followup to Man of Steel (a messy but overall okay film) featuring Batman and Superman going at it would somehow not only review worse than MoS but significantly so.

I can't fault people for expect 70%
