Batman vs Superman: World's Finest Three-Year Wait

So long as Geoff is the lore supervisor and the bulk of it is Affleck, I'm happy. Geoff Johns has some good story ideas, but dialogue is not one of them. I'm not too worried though.

Most people are reacting to Johns, which was my reaction too since he has stretches of genius but also periods of really challenging choices and stiff dialog... but I'm wondering if Affleck can carry that much... not just directing and starring but also writing... I always figured he'd co-write by default, but not helm the thing.

Especially since he's considered BvS a crash course in big budget action and VFX-heavy production... he's going to be taking on so much all at once.

On one hand it's a little concerning... on the other, his confidence in the WB must be through the roof it willing to commit like that, especially after being burned by Daredevil. So I'm guessing what he's done with BvS and what he's seen with Justice League has him on-board with his whole being.

I have a feeling that Ben Affleck's Batman will be less about big-budget third act full of explosions and big set pieces, and more quiet, detective bats.

Maybe. Batman's kind of a bizarre anomaly in that his movies have swung back and forth on the reality scale.

I think that one of the reasons to have Batman in the shared cinematic universe is to allow Batman's more supernatural elements into the cinematic mythos... and that's going to tend to mean VFX.

I feel like that's the approach they're taking with the Superman sequel. Wait for the cinematic universe to catch-up to Superman's level of crazy so that his solo sequel can have plausible threats on his level that seem natural to this world.

IIRC Johns had some input with Goyer on Man of Steel too, or at least was his consultant for the lore and everything. Goyer talked about in the forward for Secret Origins.

Liked some of Johns stuff but I'm not a big reader of his stuff, currently going through my Batman backlog of Snyder/Capullo, but seems weird to me folks in the OT thread are saying he doesn't like or write Batman well when I just saw the Batman blu-rays and he's featured in the docs talking up the character and everything. lol

So, about the whole "dark" and "edgy" DC movies.

I'm thinking there's has to be some humor in this movie right?

Maybe with Lex or something.

the dark knight is probably the darkest this genre has gone in movies and that had plenty of jokes.

people take that "no jokes" thing too seriously (ironically enough..heh)

Ben Affleck directing a solo Batman is a great news since Affleck is a very good director ( I didn't even click on the other thread but I guess it's full of negativity.. correct me if I'm wrong)

DC now need to announce Man of Steel 2 before it's too late for Cavill, the clock is ticking.

Mostly negative towards Johns, people like Affleck writing.

I always hope someone more articulate than I will post a thread deconstructing the Superman character with various references to educate the "Superman is boring" peeps.

I've thought of doing this, but I have a friend that I do a podcast with and we've had SEVERAL Superman/Batman debates with me listing that it's about the character more than the fights and powers but for him it always comes down to "OP Boy Scout God". It just made me think there's no changing some peoples minds.

Really interested in the tone of a new standalone Batman film. Its funny because even the Nolan Trilogy had different vibes in each one while still feeling cohesive somewhat altogether. I think this time around we'll just jump straight in with super in the zone Batman and work our way from there rather than starting from the beginning. I just hope that we see a lot of Bruce and that they capture the juxtaposition of the two lifestyles he juggles, Bruce allows for batman to become more human and almost works as punctuation for the films, giving time for the audience to breathe and such.

I wonder how the whole universe is going to feel, especially for someone like Batman who's had stories that have him very human and grounded in one story and almost a God among men the next, he seems really beefed up here going toe to toe with Superman, hopefully like people have said, we get Batman in alleyways slipping in and out of the shadows too, its not like they're mutually exclusive!

There's some level of hypocrisy to calling Superman OP and not Batman, if he thinks Batman could take Superman down.

Anyways this Affleck/Johns announcement has me hyped for the night. Makes me think that we'll be getting names/writers for everything until 2018 and maybe Shazam. Seems weird that this would be the one character Johns would co write for, maybe he's contributing to Flash/Shazam as well.

We have Suicide Squad to juxtapose Superman-fighting Batman with the Batman who takes on criminals and assassins and Joker

I hope so, I haven't kept up with the others projects admittedly so I'm not up to scratch with Suicide Squad and Batman's involvement and the likes. Hopefully they reach a good balance with their universe and have films that go off in all sorts of directions with these interesting characters.

Ben Affleck to direct and co-write with Geoff Johns the new Batman? Geoff Johns?

Who whould you rank 3rd in the list of most famous DC characters, after Batman and Superman.

The Flash or Wonder Woman ? I really can't tell.

Edit: or maybe it's The Joker or Catwoman or Robin/Nightwing

Wonder Woman I think if we go by heroes.

Including villains then Joker, he is as famous as Superman and Batman imo.

Currently i'd say
1. Batman
2. Joker
3. Superman
4.Lex, Catwoman and Wonder Woman all around the same.

all time,
1. Superman
2. Batman
3. Joker
4. Wonder Woman
5. Lex
6. Catwoman

Flash would be directly after Superman and a good deal of Bat characters.

Bat suit looks great, but the manequin doesn't look like Affleck's build from what little footage we've seen. Look a little slimmer and not as bulky in the chest.
From the looks of the Suicide Squad set pics, the suit from that film looks to be the one seen at the Con.

Can we expect The Batman to be announced at their SDCC panel?

Practically a given, I would think. I have a feeling they'll announce a good deal of their upcoming slate beyond Wonder Woman and Justice League.

My one wish is that they don't announce movies that are more than three years away. Keep some surprises in store for the future so you have a reason to come back to SDCC with new things to announce and get folks excited.

Yea, I'm not a fan of "here's everything for the next 6 years". That's a problem I'm having with the MCU. It's starting to make the movies in between Avengers flicks seem like filler.

Harley Quinn, John Stewart seems more popular than Lex

Heres what I predict.

*Zach Snyder comes onto stage, asks if everyone will stand for the Justice League
*Entire cast of JL walks out, crowd goes insane
*Announces The Batman and Man of Tomorrow
*Announces intergalactic space corps movie The Green Lanterns
*Crowd cums
*Zach says "One more SMALL announcement. We want to make an Atom movie, but we wanted to do it WRIGHT"
*Edgar Wright walks out and hes 10 inches tall.
*Auditorium explodes.

I'm hoping for at least half an hour dedicated to the DCEU. Try to keep Snyder from talking too much because he takes forever to get a sentence out so information output can be maximized. New BvS trailer, SS teaser and new promo shots for the League members including GL (obviously with cast actor).

Anything else beyond that is bonus but the above is all I care about.

100%. And maybe a quick titillating video of Ben Affleck and Jared Leto
When is their panel?
I haven't heard about a single panel besides Street Fighter V having been done at SDCC yet.

But don't we already know which movies are coming out after Wonder Woman? Alas Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and Green Lantern.

Unfortunately the panels are not streamed. We will get some shaky cam footage from the crowd.

The cell phone cameras can film in 4K these days, and they are sitting, so the panels will be up on youtube in HD quality with little to no shaking.

I wanna see Joker play a role in the next Superman solo.

I'm almost sick of Batman vs. Joker at this point.

I wanna see on screen how Superman would react against the Joker.

That film slate was leaked from an investor's meeting or something like that, it was never officially announced. And looking at it, there's no way WB would stick to it (it had no solo Batman or Superman films until 2021 at the earliest). Think of that list as a rough draft, of sorts.

If by leaked, you mean Warner Bros putting out an actual press release to announce their slate of the movie AND noted that solo Batman/Superman films were coming... nothing has changed their plans... yet!

And, in a massive expansion of the Studio’s DC Entertainment-branded content, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema will release a slate of at least 10 movies—as well as stand-alone Batman and Superman films—from 2016 through 2020 that expands this prized universe of characters:

Nope. There was never an official press release so it's not a stretch to imagine there may be some changes to the list and/or schedule.

Edit: I take it back. Never saw official word but there it is

WARNER BROS. DETAILS STRATEGIC CONTENT PLANS AT TIME WARNER INVESTOR CONFERENCE

AREAS OF FOCUS INCLUDE INCREASED OVERALL FILM AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION, GLOBAL FRANCHISES, CABLE AND PREMIUM TV PRODUCTION, KIDS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

THREE “FANTASTIC BEASTS,” TEN DC ENTERTAINMENT AND THREE “LEGO” FILMS CONFIRMED

(October 15, 2014 – Burbank, CA) Today at a Time Warner investors meeting, Warner Bros.’ Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara outlined an aggressive content strategy for the Studio aimed at increasing profits while “doubling down on outstanding content, working with the best talent and maintaining the culture that makes Warner Bros. so great.”

“The demand for high quality video content is growing fast – in the United States and around the world – as new technologies have created new platforms and millions of new connected consumers,” said Tsujihara. “The opportunity is huge. And no studio is better positioned to take advantage of it than Warner Bros.”

As part of his presentation, Tsujihara announced a bold expansion of the industry’s broadest theatrical slate, built around the largest, most important global franchises. Warner Bros. Pictures will release three LEGO-branded films over the next four years, building upon the enormous success of this year’s “The LEGO Movie” ($468 million worldwide box office), starting with “Ninjago” in 2016, directed by Charlie Bean and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Batman will take a star turn in “The LEGO Batman Movie” in 2017, directed by Chris McKay, and the sequel, “The LEGO Movie 2,” will debut in 2018.

The Studio will release three pictures, in 2016, 2018 and 2020, based on best-selling author J.K. Rowling’s original story and screenwriting debut, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Set in an extension of her familiar wizarding world, featuring magical creatures and characters inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander, “Fantastic Beasts” will be directed by David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and reunite the filmmaking team of David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

And, in a massive expansion of the Studio’s DC Entertainment-branded content, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema will release a slate of at least 10 movies—as well as stand-alone Batman and Superman films—from 2016 through 2020 that expands this prized universe of characters:

o “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” directed by Zack Snyder (2016)
o “Suicide Squad,” directed by David Ayer (2016)
o “Wonder Woman,” starring Gal Gadot (2017)
o “Justice League Part One,” directed by Zack Snyder, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles (2017)
o “The Flash,” starring Ezra Miller (2018)
o “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa (2018)
o “Shazam” (2019)
o “Justice League Part Two,” directed by Zack Snyder (2019)
o “Cyborg,” starring Ray Fisher (2020)
o “Green Lantern” (2020)

On the television front, Warner Bros. Television Group is the undisputed industry leader, providing 32 shows to the five broadcast networks and an overall roster of more than 60 shows among network, cable, first-run syndication and animation. WBTVG will grow its leadership across multiple fronts, including cable, premium platform and kids programming as well as further its precedent-setting activities in SVOD and international television production and format sales.

Among the Studio’s programs are network TV’s #1 entertainment series in “The Big Bang Theory” and #1 unscripted series in “The Voice,” as well as favorites such as “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Gotham,” “The Middle,” “Mom,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Bachelor” franchise, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and many more.

For Turner, Warner Horizon Television’s “Rizzoli & Isles” and Warner Bros. Television’s “Major Crimes” are two of the top three scripted series on all of basic cable for 2014, and the #1 and #2 shows, respectively, on TNT. The Studio has a number of future projects set up at TNT, including a pilot production order for an untitled drama set in the unpredictable world of the Florida cocaine trade in the 1970s, from Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Bay and Michelle Ashford, and is in development on “Titans,” from Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman and Marc Haimes, based upon the DC Comics characters.

At HBO, WBTV’s first series for the premium television company, the critically acclaimed “The Leftovers,” debuted this summer and has already been picked up for a second season. WBTV has also produced the pilot “Westworld,” from executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan, Jerry Weintraub and Lisa Joy, and starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Evan Rachel Wood, and has a number of other projects in development at the company.

Warner Bros. Animation is producing new series based on the Studio’s iconic brands, such as the upcoming “Be Cool Scooby-Doo!” and “The Tom and Jerry Show.” WBA’s “Teen Titans Go!” ranks as the #1 show in its timeslot against all kids’ networks.

For the first time ever, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution has licensed the exclusive subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) rights to one of television’s most successful series ever, WBTV’s “Friends,” to Netflix in the U.S. and Canada. Starting January 1, 2015, Netflix members will have access to the entire 236 episode run of the series, which is still an enormous linear hit on cable (Nick at Nite and TBS) and in broadcast syndication.

Worldwide Television Distribution has also sold the off-network SVOD rights to the hit Warner Bros. Television series “Person of Interest” to Netflix in the United States. The first three seasons of the series, which currently airs on CBS, will be made available to subscribers in fall 2015, at the same time the series premieres off-network on WGN America.

These two deals are just the latest examples of how the Studio’s hit series continue to serve as annuities for decades beyond their initial broadcast. Further increasing the value of Warner Bros.’ library, since 1999, WBTVG has developed and produced 20 series that have reached the 100-episode milestone or will do so during the 2014–15 season.

“At Warner Bros., we are united to not only continue to create the world’s greatest entertainment content, but to over-deliver on our financial targets,” said Tsujihara. “I’ve been with the company for over 20 years and I can’t remember a time when I’ve felt more confident about our future. We’re committed to maintaining and enhancing the great legacy of Warner Bros., the world’s most iconic and profitable studio.”
