Damn! BF3 literally killed my PSU. Was playing for 3 hours when i heard a "POP" then the computer shutdown with the good old smell from burned electronics, i feared for the whole computer but luckily only the PSU was affected, my good old PC POWER&COOLING 750W let me down.

Bought a Corsair TX850W and so far so good.

I haven't changed anything aside from FOV, but that's what I got for default on the following

2600k @ 4.4 with stock voltage
2GB 6950 @ stock (11.9 driver)
8GB of ram

I haven't looked into GPU vram usage, my temps aren't that high though even with the fans automatically ramping up to something like 38%

I've only had one crash so far and that was when BF3 closed while it was loading a map. I haven't seen the green flash happen since I posted about it a few days ago.

So with the above, I get 60FPS, I rarely see it dip below the mid 50s. I should probably turn off something to see if I can squeeze a more consistent 60+

Will check on CPU and GPU temps/usage after a few games today.

So Auto is doing a scan of your system and recommending settings based on what it finds? It's not just some pre-determined default?

Whoops, yeah it defaulted to those auto settings when I booted up the first time.

I had a 5870 -> 6970 -> GTX 580 so total cost is kind of blurred. 580 Lightning is a helluva single GPU card for the price though. It already comes OC'd and you can OC it even more. I've seen 10-20 FPS difference from a lightning at 950mhz vs. a stock 580 in certain games (never runs past 70c either at full load). I don't see these VRAM bottlenecks that people are talking about either with it.
in regard to upgrading GPUs, what do you do with your old one? There doesn't seem to be a convenient way to "trade up". Is Ebay the best option?

Sigh.

Now this game refuses to load. The loading screen takes forever and after a couple of minutes I get kicked by the administrator.

I figured this might be a problem with the multiplayer. Every big multiplayer launch has connection issues, right? But I can't even play the campaign. Wth Dice? I've never had this many problems with a PC game before.

Or craigslist, something of the equivalent in your area. Or friends or an HTPC build.

I had it crash on me twice during the loading screen yesterday and after that it was flawless. I'm running Phenom X4 955, 4gb RAM, and a GTX 570....it's obviously not my setup, and I've got plenty of cooling. I think the game is just buggin' out, a few patches I guarantee it fixes itself.

Anyone running at 2560 x 1600 (30")?

What frame rates are you getting and on what hardware and settings? With FPS's I really notice frame rate drops and screen tearing. I'm trying to get BF3 running at constant 60fps even during heavy action scenes.

2560x1440 here, 60 fps regardless of whats going on. Settings used : u
everything ultra/enabled except msaa, texture setting on high. Sli 560 and 2600k

Is there any general consensus as to which settings can be lowered for a good performance increase, without much effect on the visual quality? I know switching from HBAO to SSAO is one of these, but what about the others? Leaving personal preferences aside, of course ("disable motion blur because it sucks").

I really want to know this as well. I think that turning off motion blur increases performance for minimal loss no? Also what is more important. Having texture on ultra instead of high or geting some MSAA in there?

My rig is a couple years old, Phenom II X4 @ 3.5, 8 GB RAM and a 5770. Anyone with a similar setup? How low do I have to go to get 30+ fps?
I have got the same setup except the cpu overclock and im getting 30 to 40 on high setting.

I'm getting stutter now on my 5850 with 11.10v3. Anyone else? Or how can I fix this?

Finally was able to fix mine with your suggestion, thing is that i have to disable all my monitors but one to fix the HUD, even if i change the resolution in the file. So i have to turn off eyefinity and run off just one monitor.

For the stuttering, are you hittin vram limits, check GPU Z

Also a general question for everyone, i cant find how to display VRAM usage in Afterburner overlay using the 6950 modded, i can display pretty much everything but this, its just not on the list of things to display :(

I think I have found a decent solution to (mouse) stuttering, guys

Go to Origin Settings and make sure the ''activate Origin in-game'' box is not checked. My Origin is dutch, so I don't know the precise naming in english, but you'll know what I mean when you see it. This reduced my stutters at least 75%, I think. Hopefully the last 25% stutter will be patched away. One more thing though, and this is really weird. Do not alt-tab at all, or else it will be messed up again. You can restore it again by alt-tabbing till the stutter is gone, but I think it's then never as good as you started out with, but that could just be me.

I think this helped my game, but it could be a placebo. So GAF, try this out and see if it works.

i7 930 overclocked with 2 x GTX 460s overclocked in SLI.

At 1920x1080 I use all settings on High, motion blur, MSAA, off with Aniso at 16x.

80% of the time it's 60fps, though it does dip around the high 50's in intense firefights. On bigger conquest maps with 50+ players it can be 40-50 fps though haven't noticed it yet drop below 40. Impressive and the game still looks quite good.

I'm also getting no bugs or stuttering thankfully!

You know where I notice it crashing? When I click to join a game via battlelog and I just leave it on desktop to load, rather than clicking on the bf3 tab to go fullscreen.

I tried it again after I made those posts here, I'll test again later.

Hmm now I'm not too sure of this. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. Strange..

If I'm hitting VRAM limits, is there something I can change to resolve that? A setting?

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
So I lowered my textures from Ultra to High last night. It pretty much remedied the problem where the game would start having 1-2 second freezes after 10+ minutes of play.

Also, I can't tell the difference between "high" and "ultra" textures. "High" looks almost exactly the same... super high-res ground textures, etc. It may just enable some high-end shaders on Ultra

This is on:

Windows 7 64
i5 quad 2.66
4 gig ram
6850 1 gig w/ latest beta drivers (beta 3)

Settings:

1680x1050
Everything Ultra except:
Textures High
2x Anti aliasing
Medium Anti Aliasing post
8x AA
Motion Blur off (why anyone would want to make their image blurry in a competitive multiplayer game just boggles my mind)

Didn't do anything for me.

Id get rid of MSAA since its a performance hog. If that aint enough lower Mesh Quality, Terrain Decoration and Texture Quality.

Have any of you tried BF3 on older AMD drivers and then updated to see improvements? Worth it?

Im still using Catalyst 11.8 and played last night. Was getting 30-40 FPS with my settings mostly ultra with shadows and AA turned down some. It was very playable but I want to know if I can do better with the newer drivers. My GPU is ATI HD5850.

My mouse feels so sensitive in this. Im not sure I like the way it feels yet even after tweaking some settings. Ill have to monkey around some tonight.

So, you're basically disabling the Origin overlay? This makes sense, I'll have to try it.

11.9 had Beta improvements so you got some better performance through that. Personally I'm waiting for the final version of 11.10 on Monday, currently preview only.

Ahh ok, thanks. I think Ill wait it out too. Game is more than playable as is.

Does anyone know how to install the 11.10 preview 3 drivers on a laptop?

Friend of mine is having alot of crashes in the game and it might be related to that.

anyone else seeing alot of tearing or whatever it is that makes it not feel smooth like COD or BFBC2? Im getting 60+ fps but it feels unsmooth and does not feel like 60 fps

I had that exact same system and it ran the alpha fine. I recently upgraded to a GTX 570 and this is how the game looks on ultra with fraps capturing, keep in mind the only difference between my system and yours is the video card.

Sounds like you need to turn vsync on.

Anyone here with CF 5850s? I was getting 30-60fps in the SP on 1080p High settings w/Ultra textures, but I think it should be 60+ all the time.

I have CF 5850 and 2500K, all stock speeds. I'm getting about 50-75 fps in single and 40-60 in multi so far. 1680 x 1050 resolution, all settings ultra, MSAA turned off.

I have a feeling once ATI/AMD fixes the CAP profile it will bump up the crossfire performance, but I'm happy where it's at. I just need more time to play...

yup, same thing happened to me while playing bf3.

unlucky for me i i had to replace the psu and mobo.
had a corsair 500w. bought a corsair tx650. hopefully that's enough for OC my 580 and 2600k.

Has anyone had any visual glitches like from the beta yet? It always happens on full 64 player servers for me. It's massive flickering all over the place.

CPU and GPU temps look fine...

I have a similar setup, 2600 non K and a GTX580, 650W might be ok but u should have got a tx750 just to have some power to spare.

Yeah, I didn't install any CAP profiles. My GPUs only have 50-60% load.

Really? Isn't 650w on the safe side for a 580?
what'd the load wattage on a 580 anyways?

I haven't run Rivatuner in ages so I installed version 2.24 but all the overclocking and temp monitoring options are missing. What do I need to get those working?

VSYNC takes a performance hit and has input lag though
