Battlefleet Gothic: Armada | OT | Plasma engines to Ramming Speed!

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is based on the Battlefleet Gothic tabletop game by Games Workshop. In this game, you will command fleets comprised of ancient vessels as you try to either defend, despoil or loot the Gothic Sector. Your armada contains ships ranging from humble 1km long Escorts to massive 8km long Battleships. Each of these ships can be upgraded in several different ways to further augment your arsenal. Your Ships of the Line can be further customized with different Skills, Crew Upgrades and Favours as your Captains gain experience.

But be careful with your ships. While there is no permadeath, these vessels will take several turns to be repaired if they get destroyed in combat - whether you were playing in multiplayer or campaign. Not to mention, your captains can mutiny in combat if they feel they are too close to death. You can attempt to withdraw your ships from the battle, but they may also get Lost in the Warp and will take some time to return to your fleet. Or just execute the traitorous cur for trying to abandon the battle.

The campaign sees you take the role of an Imperial Commander, fervently trying to turn back the 12th Black Crusade of Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos, while also being harried by Orkish and Eldar pirates.

Imperial Thought of the Day: Blessed is the mind too small for doubt.

The Imperial Navy is the Imperiums main army for void warfare. Its ships are millenia old behemoths, build to bring the glory and wroth of the Immortal God Emperor to the ends of the Galaxy.
The Imperial Navy is a balanced faction. It's ships are of middling speed and armor and mount a balanced loadout of weapons. Massive macro-batteries deliver devastating broadsides while Lances will strike with pinpoint accuracy. Frontal torpedoes are also a common armament on the vessels of the Imperium and their heavier ships can mount the devastating Nova Cannon.

Let the Galaxy Burn!

A dark mirror of the Imperial Navy, the Chaos Fleet is comprised of humans who have sworn themselves to the service of the Dark Gods of Chaos. Their vessels are even older than the Imperiums, as a vast number of them still hail from the Horus Heresy in the 31st Millenium that split the fledgling Imperium.
Their ships are slightly faster, but also slightly more fragile than the lmperial Navys ships and favor Lance batteries over Macro cannons.

"The best means of Attack is Defence, an' the best means of Attack is a really really Big One, right, with lots of Boys an' dead big shooty things an' what have ya." - legendary Ork Smartboy Derek Zog

Da Freebootaz are Orks that have left the normal Orkish society for a variety of reasons and now roam the Void under their Kaptin, lootin' and pillaging. Their ships are a flying scrapheap, but do not be deceived by their looks.
They are unwieldy, inaccurate and slow, but if they get - and stay - within weapons range, you're in a world of hurt as even Orks can't miss at point blank range. Orks love to board and ram their opponents and make heavy use of their Big Red Button to boost their engines.

You may as well try to catch starlight as bring Eldar to battle. - Imperial Navy saying

The Eldar are an ancient, arrogant race who were the masters of the Galaxy long before humans reached the stars, but are now slowly dying off. The Corsairs have been expelled from a Craftworld, but have not fallen enough to visit the Dark City of Comorragh and now prey on vulnerable targets.
Their ships are sleek, agile and graceful, but fragile. They need to stay at range and use their maneuvering advantage to dance around their slower opponents lest they get destroyed.

It captures the essence of its inspiration while faithfully translating the experience into the digital, it’s got an attractive and stark aesthetic, and I’m still giddy over the one time I rammed a battlecruiser through three frigates and destroyed them all without stopping.

Game is absolutely great, captures the 40k flair perfectly (especially in the campaign), has a campaign that allows you to lose missions and keep going with the missions changing and campaign getting harder and also letting you make choices that go into branching narrative paths and it has a skirmish mode that is kinda like an infinite little campaign mode for your selected race.

Also, the game can be gotten very cheap right now.

Campaign is kinda hard too, even on normal. Really need to better my tactics and probably my loadout.

It really REALLY pays off to have a ship or two build for specific objective modes.
I have this one ship that is all about speed and boarding for data recovery and it works wonders.

Yay an OT.

Game is excellent. As soon as I can get free of Dark Souls 3's claws I'll dive headfirst into this.

Yah. Feels bad when you lose a data recovery vs Orks.

Really enjoying it but man it's hard.

Needs some balancing but overall the game is great. Excellent visuals and 40k atmosphere.

Don't let me down, GAF. I'm debating between this and Stellaris

Is Playfield legit? Game's $29.99 there

I don't know about that site but be careful which store you buy on. I read somewhere that the free post launch DLC is only included in copies from certain stores. Trying to find the link now.

Edit: Found it

Hey guys,

Sorry if you missed the info but the only shops to get the Early Adopter Edition (Space Marine fleet + an additional faction yet to be unveiled for free if you buy until 2 months after launch) are the Official Store, Steam and Gamesplanet.

The potential physical copies of the game are also Early Adopter Editions.

if you intend on investing some time in the multiplayer, then i'd say go with gothic. it has this sort of addictive quality where you always want to play one more match, with no match ever lasting more than 10 minutes. it also helps that the game has no ranking system what so ever and by the nature of the board like gameplay mechanics, it is possibly the least stressful rts game that i've played since myth2. losing in this game is still fun, especially when you warp your admiral ship from a losing battle during the final few seconds. in that case, it'll feel like a win despite the defeat screen popping up

stellaris will easily be the better game but i can't think of any 4x game that hasn't significantly improved after a few patches and i don't think stellaris is going to have any issues maintaining any sort of community in the longrun. rts games are one of the few type of games where it's better to buy in early rather than later if you want to play multiplayer. having said that, gothic seems to be selling quite well and is quickly nearing 100k so it might have a bit of legs

Gothic is getting great word of mouth btw, because not only is it well made, it seems to be pretty bug free, well balanced and is sold at a cheaper than normal price

I think I read it is coming, but to be fair the game does miss some pretty basic multiplayer feature like... allowing you to play with a friend.

edit : game is really pretty fun from what I played, campaign is well made, the idea of allowing you to loose a mission and make it have a impact is pretty good ( but I must say that I usually reload until I win, because I alway want to find how I can win a given mission ). Really my biggest grip is not being able to zoom out more.

you can play with a friend though.

you can play 1v1 or you can play 2v2 against other players and soonish (according to devs) you will be able to 2v2 co-op against AI

Just glad this has Pause (or rather just really slow down time) in the campaign. A handful of recent RTS have been nixing that option. I get why it's absent in MP obviously, but I've always loved the feature in single player.

I love this game.

The campaign is hard but not impossible. Once I started playing to my strenghts and set up broadsides early I started winning fights. Ramming is awesome too.

Really great game, good to see an OT for it. Totally oozes that "grim darkness of the far future" style in all aspects, sound, visuals and gameplay. Using a commissar to execute a disobedient ship captain trying to flee the battle for the first time was really satisfying. Very much looking forward to the next two factions, Tau would be my pick for the unannounced one, though seeing Tyranid Hive fleets would be awesome.

One of the best uses of a Games Workshop IP since Dawn of War 1+2, hopefully Total Warhammer will be great too.

it's not absent in PvP
You and your opponent can totally slow down the game with a button press and it'll drain a bar

Still annoyed that it's Total Warhammer, not Total Warhammer 40k. I have zero interest in fantasy Warhammer, but find sci-fi Warhammer to be fascinating

i'm really liking this game. SP skirmish is also a lot of fun, especially using the other races. The AI is also pretty competent playing. In the campaign i just unlocked the favours and i really enjoy the way they change the ships.

Been having good fun with the game so far, just reached turn 8 on the strategic map.

I kinda miss the 3rd dimension from Homeworld games and such, but this game as its own tactical challenges to contend with and I'm still learning my stuff. Even on normal, the campaign sure likes to kick you in the teeth now and them. I'm also pretty happy that I haven't run into anything even resembling a noticeable bug or a technical issue.

To be honest i don't know much about either universe; my contact with 40k was the dawn of war and the space marine games. I like that total war went with fantasy since there has been no "great" game for the fantasy universe.

I've been eyeing this game for a good while now. I really want it, but have too much on my plate both gaming and otherwise right now. The Warhammer IP's of late have been really solid.

Wth, I just checked and yeah.... why does the main menu say ( at least in French ) that you will do random match if it actually also allow you to play your friends.... Great now I need to convince people I know to buy the game. ^ ^

I guess what I read was about playing with friends but against AI then.

I do like Warhammer but the fact they locked CHAOS behind pre-order wall really turned me off that game.

I just reached turn 13 and holy shit *feature spoiler*
HOLY SHIT EXTERMINATUS IS IN.

I really love the slightly moving pictures style they use for the cutscenes.

Welp, bought. Couldn't help myself :p

There seems to be an hilarious issue with hotkeys, with a "default" mapping stupid as fuck. I mean, look at that Z as "Camera Forward", or the keys assigned to each control group, and many others. Clicking on the Default button seems to fix it and assign the proper mapping it should have from the start. But holy cow, how can an issue like this (that seems to be known since early March according to Mr. Google) get to the launch version.

Edit: Actually, the regular key mapping seems to be the ideal for AZERTY keyboards. Still, that shouldn't be THE option for an international version.

I'm also liking the range of different battle scenarios, it seems like so far they've introduced a new type every turn. Blockade running, assassination, ground support, data protection/heist, escort, straight-up skirmish etc.

Feel about 50/50 on that, a 40k themed Total War would be unbelievably sweet, but I don't see CA doing it justice, they've had problems with more ranged battle focused Total War games in the past, and there's definitely a lack of good Warhammer fantasy games. But Emperor willing, there'll be some good 40k mods for Stellaris.

Absolutely loving the game so far. The 12th Black Crusade is in full motion right now in my campaign and it is so good. Far bigger and way cooler than I had anticipated with missions that alter the campaign based on winning or loosing. These developers have gone way beyond my expectations and after this I hope to see more from them.

What's a bigger fault is the fact it is not "Total Warhammer", any lawyer who objected to that idea should have been accused and shot for heresy.

Hopefully though Relic announces Dawn of War 3 soon, that should get my ground-based 40K RTS fix sated.

I swear, absolutely NO ONE expected the campaign to be this well done.
It's completely blowing me away.

Exactly! I could have sworn that I thought that the campaign was gonna be a series of missions with talking portraits doing some lamed exposition with lanky voice over but by The Emperor do they deliver here.

The campaign features full on cinematics that just oozes of the grandeur and ridiculousness that is 40K, from the intro of Abaddon to a cinematic showing the ceremony of warp travel aboard a Imperial vessel.

The voice acting is equally hammy as fuck but also well done, it fits the theme perfectly having your Commissar aboard your ship yell at you in full Emperor's Wrath Mode about how to deploy your ships.

I cannot stop gushing just how bloody great BF:G is as a Warhammer 40K game.

On one hand I wish this game would be bigger- at 700 points the scale doesn't feel epic at all as you're bringing at most 2 or 3 battleships to the table (compared to say naval battles in the Total War games where this is a strong sense of scale. On the other hand, it's hard enough managing the scale at 700 points, beyond that size I think the fleet would be unmanageable (and so far I really don't trust the AI enough to auto-manage stuff like firing torpedoes).

I'm surprised this game is better than I expected. I'm not really too huge in the 40k universe, I know the basics and such, but this game is really enjoyable so far. Definitely a sleeper hit for me.

Yep, I'm playing the campaign and the production values are tremendous. Voice acting is almost always on point (I dislike one character, but I can even understand why he talks the way he does) There are some very well done cutscenes, and the gameplay is top notch.

So is this more of an old school RTS in space rather than some crazy 4x game? Would fans of single player RTS's enjoy this (Example- I played through SC2's single player mode but never really touched multiplayer)

It's more of a squad tactics game than a full on RTS. You command fleets (their size and composition varies depending on your choices and some other things) and you have to micromanage your ships in order to be successful (for instance, torpedoes can only be fired from the prow of your ships, so you need to position your vessels and fire them, etc)

There's also a big map in which you decide which mission to tackle (Orks, Eldar and Chaos fleets may attack planets and it's up to you to decide if you want to help or not, unless it's a main mission) Your ships and your character level up and you can spend a currency that you earn in battle in order to upgrade them.

I'm playing only singleplayer so far (not a big fan of multiplayer strategy games, since I suck at them) and it's fun and entertaining.

Only few missions into the campaign (third turn, I think) and loving it. At times it can become a bit of micromanagement hell, but it's managable with the spacebar bullet time.

Also:

Fuck you, Chaos cruiser jumping to warp half second before I can ram you to death :(

I wanted it to be like SW: Empire at War, but I'm okay with the direction of Battlefleet Gothic. Love me some Warhammer 40k

Haha, I see your unfortunate run in with escaping enemy vessels and I raise you THIS:

That damnable Chaos vessel managed to escape when it was... blown up wide open (and I lost the mission thanks to that)

I bought it. I caved after watching one video a few hours after posting my message. I'm so weak willed. The warp would swallow me whole.

Wtf... I just did a mission where I needed to get data from an enemy ship and escape. I setup my ships and started it. The enemy ships flew to the corner of the map. I went full burn as often as I could, I couldn't even reach it before he warped away and I lost.

I cheated and reloaded. That was just silly.
