Dancehall star Beenie Man barred from MTV show after gay protest

MIAMI - Dancehall star Beenie Man, who has recorded anti-gay songs in the past, was yanked from a concert associated with the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend after gay groups planned a protest.

MTV pulled the Jamaican singer from the roster Tuesday after South Florida gay activists announced plans to protest Saturday's concert in Miami over some of his past lyrics, including "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays" and "Queers must be killed."

"We don't want anything to overshadow what will be a great weekend of music events for South Floridians," MTV spokeswoman Marnie Black said Wednesday. She declined further comment.

Homophobic lyrics? Protests? Where, o where have I heard that before?

its ok slim shady did a duet with Elton John, and had a gay relationship that only one of d12 knows about + the dead one

depends on what the lyrics intended. for all the flack eminem received all his lyrics were in jest and he even admits to it in interviews and in his songs. and the other flack he recieved was for words like "faggot".

dont know the beenie man songs they talking about but if he sang about a new jamaica where he kills of all gays...well thats diff.

"depends on what the lyrics intended."

Are you being serious? I think it's pretty obvious what he's trying to say. I did a search on this story:

“The release of “kill gays” songs by Beenie Man and other Jamaican dancehall music artists has been followed by a wave of anti-gay assaults in Jamaica and Britain (where there is a substantial population of Jamaican descent).

“Jamaican lesbians and gays have been shot and stabbed, macheted and stoned to death, doused with petrol and set ablaze, and chased into the sea and left to drown”, said Mr Tatchell."

"His song Han up Deh includes the words: “Hang chi chi gal wid a long piece of rope” (hang queer women with a long piece of rope). "

Wow, those lyrics are pretty bad. When rappers toss the "faggot" and "homo" around they're usually talking about another rapper, not an actual homosexual. "Queers must be killed" is a bit more direct, though he could still argue he's talking about lamewads in general (like in an "I don't like you, therefore you're a queer" kind of way), but you can't really tip-toe around "Hang queer women with a long piece of rope.".

Fuck 'dem battiboys!!!

Seriously that is kinda harsh. I'm by no means and advocate of gay lifestyles, but endorsing their wholesale homicide is kind of shiesty IMO. I mean are they really fucking up your life so bad by butt-pumping their boyfriends that you think they deserve to be murdered?? Come on. You would think that most of these irrational homo-haters would believe that AIDS would kill them all off eventually anyways, right (I love it when I run into people who still think that AIDS affects only homosexuals)??

Anyway normally I'm not for MTV's whole PC/reactionary approach, but this seems justified. If he's more likely to get booed off the stage or pelted by (irony).."fruit"..than he is to complete the performance, then he shouldn't be there in the first place. Bumbaclot whanchatme..

Oh please, this is about money, they aren't going to let this guy play a show and drive out ticket sales due to backlash or bad water with the public.

Actually, if you singing prohomosexuality, he would have been kept on the show and MTV probably would have used him as early marketing for their LOGO network. MTV wins either way.

You aren't seriously so dumb to think this is a first amendment issue, are you?

But wait:

"Certain lyrics and recordings I have made in the past may have caused distress and outrage among people whose identities and lifestyles are different from my own. ... I offer my sincerest apologies to those who might have been offended, threatened or hurt by my songs," he said in a statement.

Beenie Man's manager, Clyde McKenzie, said "in many instances the lyrics of dancehall artists are metaphorical... [Beenie Man] has made it clear that he doesn't want to incite violence."

Beenie Man says that he doesn't mean it; Eminem says that he doesn't mean it. The actions against Beenie Man are a double-standard.

"I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays"
hahaha, that's from "Damn!!"

the chorus goes... "Damn!! Dem a spend battyman g's, dem an battyman ah smoke trees"

hell, listen to the track "Pussy Language" on his new album "Back To Basics"...

man, if i had to list all the gay bashing songs beenie man has done, i'd be here all day....

well, not really, but it's probably somewhere near 15...

off the top of my head...

Damn!!
Pussy Language
Batty Man Fi Dead
Rool Deep
Better Learn (Fire Burn)

i wonder why all those gay groups didnt protest sean paul or any other dancehall artists... it's almost a requirement to make at least one gay bashing track...

LOL -- so if Beenie Man, new wave poet of the 21st century, is being "metaphorical" when he says "Queers must be killed"....what exactly is the metaphor?

Seriously, I can't stand seeing all you dirty liberals trampling on the Constitution like this. Time to go back to your roots!

AMENDMENT 1
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. All citizens are must be allowed to appear on music video award shows.

That's moot. If he says that he doesn't actually want "queers" to be killed, then understanding its metaphorical value is meaningless.

I didn't say anything about censorship or First Amendment rights. I'm merely highlighting a double-standard.

well, the difference is that mtv would have been crazy to not have eminem on when he was the hottest artist in the universe, and beenie man isn't in the same popularity league... oh, plus eminem really seems like he says that shit just to say it, while everyone knows beenie man really means it...

His defense is that it is metaphorical and not literal, so somebody tell me what the metaphor is.....I'm just curious. It doesn't exactly sound like literary rhetoric. He says that he doesn't actually want gays murdered, so what is the intended underlying message when he says that?

Border, you're just too white. In Jamaica when somebody says "hey, let's murder this queer" they mean "let's end this strange topic" and "anybody wanna go burn a homosexual then hang the corpse from a bridge" means um i dunno, smoking a fat one or someting during tha break ina song.

I don't know what the underlying message is.

If he wants to kill homosexuals, why would he rap about it and then come out and say that his lyrics aren't to be taken literally? If he meant it, why would he say otherwise?

And you came to this conclusion...how?
from listening to beenie man for the past dozen plus years, buying albums, getting mixtapes, going to concerts, halls, etc and seeing him perform, etc.. that kind of thing...

Edit: oh yeah, he's anti-abortion too... could almost make a good republican...

You're saying that he means it just because he only raps about it? Has he actually DONE it or went BEYOND his lyrics to express his desire to murder gays?

well, he obviously doesn't want to go to jail... what i mean by he means it is he isnt saying it as a joke or parody or metaphor or any other bullshit like that...

I don't really listen to lyrics, but were eminem's lyrics as offensive as this singer's?

as far as i can remember (im not an enimem fan at all, so im not sure) he would drop an "F" bomb (and i don't mean fuck) everyonce in a while in his lyrics, but most of the time its in an entirely different context. This guy's lyrics seem to be purely hateful and inciteful. The way eminem comes off, it always sounds kinda cartoonish. Nobody ACTUALLY believed he wanted to kill gays or kill his wife, it was more like he just wanted to push buttons and be annoying. I don't know about Beenie man though, haven't heard the songs. I mean, nobody wanted to put Jimi Hendrix behind bars or boycott his concerts cause he sang "im going down to shoot my old lady cause i caught her messin' around with another man.".

at the end of the day, its obviously because of money/fame. Eminem was the hottest shit going at the time. IM sure if Beenie man was selling a billion records and making $$$ out the ass, he'd still be on the show, but oh well. Thats MTV's right i guess.

well, if you want to hear Damn!! or Roll Deep, they're both on Strictly The Best 25

and as far as offensive artists go, my two favorite artists are Beenie Man and Michael Jackson...

this is definately not a first amendment issue, Link. put in another light, if someone was known for a song about killing blacks, would that still be a first amendment issue if he was denied to go to the concert? No, I don't think so. Being witheld a priveledge due to your views is hardly a violation of the first amendment.

of course beenie man is going to retract/backpeddle on his statements....he wants to be on the show...he wants to be seen/heard....he wants to make money. case could be made for em also but u can CLEARLY tell in his lyrics that he is clowning around and he knows people will make a big deal of it so he pushes it further.

beanie man, if he is really being metaphorical, is neither clever or clear in his intent.

So now Eminem gets a free pass?
This is the first time I'm hearing that Eminem didn't really mean all the homophobic shit he said.

New Kids on the Block, sucked a lot of dick
Boy-girl groups make me sick
And I can't wait 'til I catch all you faggots in public
I'ma love it [hahaha]

Isn't along the same vein to what Beenie Man said?

Anyway the real question to be asked is which rapper is not homophobic.....

faggots...as in boy bands, pop artists...he is calling them faggots and that they suck dick..its deragotory (sp?) and im not completely cool with that either but u can tell he is joking....he even adds a "HAHAH" at the end. this is more in vein of friends calling each other faggots for something. thats how the word is used 99% of the time now.

what beanie man said was simply "i want a gay free jamaica" and "i want to kill gays"....no humor...clever metaphor...or any hidden meaning/double meaning....and now he simply says its a "metaphor" so he can perform.

there is a diff...its all about intention.

Read those lyrics again and then go and read the Beanie Man lyrics again. People don't take Eminems lyrics seriously because as you can tell, they're parodies and meant for comedy. That whole part you posted is a parody of that terrible LFO song. In general Eminem makes comments about specific people being gay mainly boy bands. He's not telling people to go out and murder every gay person like Beanie Man is. There's a huge difference in the tone of both of their lyrics.

i didnt even pick up that eminem was parodying that god awful LFO song.

btw i know ill get flamed for this...but what was that LFO song with JLH in the vid? she looked gorgeous in that vid and the song wasnt horrible either.

I don't think Eminem has said anything as bad as "Kill all queers" or "Let's have a gay free America". I think the worst he gets is "Criminal":

My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge
That'll stab you in the head
whether you're a fag or lez
Or the homosex, hermaph or a trans-a-vest
Pants or dress - hate fags? The answer's "yes"

Of course, you have to take into account the prologue of the song:

A lot of people ask me.. stupid fuckin questions
A lot of people think that.. what I say on records
or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life
or that I believe in it
Or if I say that, I wanna kill somebody, that..
I'm actually gonna do it
or that I believe in it
Well, shit.. if you believe that
then I'll kill you

So he pretty much admits that he doesn't buy into all of the shit he raps about, and the rest of the song is basically him pretending to be the worst type of person he can be. He plays up to the evil persona that he's been given, but in a relatively un-serious way.

One funny thing to note is that "Criminal" lyric above actually is a metaphor, since he talks about words being a "dagger" that can "stab you in the head"....not actually murdering gays. So far I have not seen any actual metaphor in the Beenie Man lyrics, though maybe he really is being taken out of context.

And I can't wait 'til I catch all you faggots in public
I'ma love it [hahaha]
Is there some underlying parody I am missing in this verse?

Look you can say, 'Oh it's parody and all in fun'.
The truth is if you were saying Eminem was being more 'open minded' than I claim him to be, then why would he use the word 'f*****' as a diss?

By your reasoning anything 'distasteful' can be anulled by a simple [hahaha].
Yeah sure minorities are not sacred cows and can be made fun of but when you include violence with the punchline it personally does not sit well with me aka Criminal.
The truth is if I made a threat to a person in real life in the 'tone' of a joke, they still could take offence to it.

To me what I find troubling with Eminem is that he plays both sides. When he first came out a few people 'admired' that he wasn't pc and openly bashed gays. Now he hugs Elton John and all things are forgiven?

I'm not saying the Eminem is as biased/bad as Beenie Man, but what irks me is when people listen to the bullshit PR Interscope puts out for him.
Do people really think his 'backflips' are part of his personal growth. Bullshit. It's all PR, gain some notoriety by bashing a minority and then claim a wider fanbase as you say it should be taken as a part of joke.

You see the same will happen to Beenie Man, now he'll hug George Michael at the next Brit Awards and he'll get to play in America. :rolleyes

Well, you're pretty clearly missing that he is referring to boy bands as faggots, and not addressing the homosexual community as a whole. He uses "faggot" as a diss because well, it's a pretty common diss.

I'm not saying that it should be acceptable, but when somebody refers to a group of guys and says "I'll beat those faggots up", it doesn't really have anything to do with true homosexuality. It just means that those guys are considered weak or effeminate or wimpy or whatever.
