Beenie Man cut from VMA concert for homophobic lyrics

"Yeah sure minorities are not sacred cows and can be made fun of but when you include violence with the punchline it personally does not sit well with me aka Criminal."

"Criminal" is only violent if you don't get his point. It's not that he's going to stab gays and lesbians, it's him talking about how his lyrics can hurt if you take them seriously (emotionally not physically). It's a pretty big difference from "Go hang a gay woman" or "Go kill gay DJ's". What else could he be meaning when he says that? There's a double meaning to those lyrics in Criminal, I really can't find the double meaning to hanging gay people.

Yes I realise the point of Criminal, 'Don't take it serious I'm saying this shit just to get a rise out of you.' sort of message. That isn't the point. Why use a violent metaphor in the first place?
You tell me....

Yes, Talking about killing gays != being generally homophobic

The truth is Eminem made his mark on three things:
1) Being White
2) Being Homophobic
3) Being the best 'new' talent at the time

Beenie Man is a dick. However his rise to fame (Internationally) cannot be attributed to his violent homophobic lyrics.

Eminem on the other hand it can be said found his fame/infamy on being a homophobe and misogonist, in the wider media.

That is what I find disturbing...

Beenie until a week ago was another ganeric Jamaican Producer....Eminem from his mainstream release made his living bashing gays and women. Gone through some 'I've see the error of my ways' to garner more wide stream recognition, as his A&R realised that the label could not take any more heat.

Neither of them should of got a reprieve...

eminem didnt make his living based on bashing women and gays...the media did it for him. his albums arent as shocking as people make them out to be....that is if u listen to tons of rap. he is white and a lot easier to go after then say a black rapper who uses the word faggot.

fact is when eminem uses the word "faggot" he isnt referring to the gay community but using it as a diss to boy bands. now whether u think thats ok or not is another story...but after the controversy it created he took it in stride and used it to his advantage. he didnt come out just using shocking lyrics to get fame.

hell i like beenie man, but for him to claim his uncreative lyrics are metaphors...thats just hilarious.

no one is banning him...he was set to perform but there would be protests so mtv said ok we wont. no one is banning him...he gets tons of play on radio, mtv, and BET.

and ur a dumbass if u think that banning beenie man is the same as banning gay shows. lets see by ur analogy if someone comes out and says "we should kill all blacks and make a new america....kill all niggers" and gets flack for that....the appropriate action would be to cancel the channel BET?

i didnt even pick up that eminem was parodying that god awful LFO song.

btw i know ill get flamed for this...but what was that LFO song with JLH in the vid? she looked gorgeous in that vid and the song wasnt horrible either.

Girl on TV.

so i was discussing the whole beenie man thing at work, and it basically boiled down to the same thing as here... eminem gets away with it, but beenie man doesn't...

oh, and if you want to talk about metaphors, here's the title of another beenie man song...

"Bun A Happy Man"

now, i'd like to point out that while beenie may have a handful of songs that could be considered gay bashing, he also has over 500 or more that aren't...

again no one is complaining he should be banned or claiming every song of his about killing gays. em only gets away with it cause you can tell he is joking, using metaphors, and isnt even directly talking about gay people. ALL RAPPERS....hell MOST PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY USE THE WORD FAGGOT AS EMINEM DOES. sad? yeah it prolly is but em and beenie arent the same. em didnt say something about killing all gays and starting america over.

Can you read what you just wrote?

Eminem already had a 'mainstream' album before the whole episode came about.
The fact that Eminem gets 'called out' on his homophobic views at all makes me suspicious about the way he was marketed.

He did not get the attention about his homophobia just because he was white. So wait you're saying that the mainstream (not only American think International) media think it's alright for black people to be homophobic/misogonist but not white people to be?

Basically everyone knows that any publicity is good publicity. Good or bad. He made an active decision(sp?) to go ahead on his way, his label (guessing how shady the industry is) puts it out as bait and watch as the sharks draw the audience.

You may think that what I'm saying is stupid, but cast your mind back to Jadakiss's Why. Nas, Immortal Technique, Paris, Talib all have similar view points in fact probably even more damaging ones yet they don't get called out?
It was bait, they released it as a single (granted some of the artists earlier probably do not have the commerical 'pull' of Jada).

Beenie Man is a dancehall artist whose main source of income is making party tracks and feels at times it is neccessary to put out his violent homophobic feelings on a track. I doubt many people who buy his albums, buy his albums for the violent homophobic lyrics he writes.

Eminem is artist who appeals to his audience (when he first came out remember) by dissing celebrities and riding a wave of contorversy concerning his views on women and gays. People buy his albums/singles to see what the fuss is about. Hence it is a marketing ploy.
In this case Eminem should of never been allowed to play on MTV (the greatest institution to popular culture) either ala Madonna.

Eminem wasn't making a political message he was doing it for sales.
It's all well and good to have the hindsight now and say it was just for fun but at the time alot of people genuinely felt he had stepped over the line. Like Beenie Man now....
