Believe it or not, gamers who like the Atelier series are NOT pedophiles

Atelier.
Why is the Octopus peeping her panties?

I had no idea what this game was, now I've Googled it and I'm worried I'm going to go to prison. Thanks a lot, OP, for damning me to a life behind bars.

what do i google to get this because all i am getting is in-game screenshots and the protagonist making silly faces

i am not a pedophile

If someone likes puppies or kittens are they into bestiality? Sometimes something is just cute.
I don't think grown men are supposed to think preteen girls are so cute that they want to store images of them and partake in media that focuses on them.

If you saw a stranger by himself at the park taking pictures of your nine year old daughter because he thought she looked cute you probably wouldn't react like, "Oh thank goodness I thought there was just something wrong with you!"

I'm not saying that like this kind of art is pedophilia, but the argument that it's not normal to be intensely interested in it and that perhaps it is a damaging thing that may lead one towards thoughts of pedophilia is not ridiculous IMO. Especially not given some of the images from this game. Is an eleven year old girl's underwear 'just cute' too?

Oh dear. Not a good title.

Anyhow OP, I thought you did a good job of describing some of the mechanics and the story bits actually sound interesting. If it wasnt for the art style I would give the game a shot.

how old are the girls in the games anyway?
would it bother you less if they looked exactly the same but instead described as somewhere in their twenties?
because albeit not 'adults', they don't really look like children either.. from what i've seen.
it's just a style they are aiming for.
there are pieces labeled "art" all over the world featuring [although non-sexual] nude children, and no one is claiming them to be catering towards pedophilia, neither should it be.
but anime and games can't be art, right?

cant it just be something they like? there's people whose avatars are cookies or pies, I dont assume they want to be the pie or they want to fuck the pie.
Well... It's not unheard of. There was a movie where this happened once.

Never heard of anyone thinking of an Atelier fan this way.

Neptunia, yes. And justified. Maybe if they were good games, but they're not.

Yeah, I've had a few people message me and tell me this thread wasn't a great idea, and they're probably right.

I was just... mad. I've been called lots of things but pedophile just really really rubbed me wrong. Especially since I was basically told I couldn't possible like the gameplay and the like... it just made me very mad and I wanted to explain in the hopes that maybe some people will be less likely to knee-jerk react to a cuter anime aesthetic.

It happens. I can't really blame you. Sometimes you can have the most logical argument for things but even then, nobody will listen. People often can't accept that some enjoy things innocuously when that thing carries a strong stigma or stereotype. Then they immediately become dismissive of any arguments over real quality or purpose of intent.

Like I said before, it's really not worth your time.

(As per the real quality of the games, I can't say. I haven't played them.)

A daughter is real, video game characters are not. Shot anyone between the eyes or chopped off their limbs recently?

Why would my 9 year old daughter be a fictional teenage cartoon?

I was 95% joking. I haven't seen an avatar like you're mentioning, but aren't the characters in this game female? That would mean that people who *supposedly* like the game for that reason would prefer young girls. The fact that the thread is full of people with young girls as their avatar defending the 'gameplay' is just too funny not to highlight.
I don't think I ever defended the gameplay!

Sure. I'm just making that assumption based of your avatar you can do the same to me. Why do you have a little girl as your avatar?

I'm not trying to be a prick I'm genuinely curious.
Because she's the main character from a show that's airing this season. Is there a problem with that?

Some people seem to think that liking moe in general = pedophilia of some form (I'll just ignore the rampant misuse of the word for now).

Looking at hardcore moe fans, especially in Japan, there is a stark divide between drawn/animated characters (2D) and real life people (3D). Outside of cosplay, there is no real crossover between the two. Animu characters in general are a heavily stylized and fantastical characterization of an archetype that are created to appeal to a very specific demographic of fans and for the most part, don't exist in real life.

Assuming there's even a sexual element to begin with, In the same way that furries aren't going around lusting after/banging farm animals, moe fans aren't going around lusting after/banging children. Sharing some characteristics with real world things doesn't make them equivalent in appeal to said things.

That all said, most people just find moe to be cute.

Not really.

Most of the threads here, not just Atelier threads, usually have people going "lolpedophilescum" whenever it feature girls drawn by japanese artists.

Really? I've never heard of this stigma before. And with that picture just above, one may understand why would some people think so.

oh damn

you called out people with anime avatars

liking anime art

Anime encompasses a ton of different styles with characters of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes.

All those avatars have something in common besides anime.

In case that's not a rhetorical question: the protagonists are usually 13 or 14 at the start of the game and 17 to 18 at the end.
(Another thing that makes the Arland games very different from almost all other RPGs is that they stretch over 5 years, without any time skips)

Most reasonable response in this whole thread.

You're not supposed to say things that make sense in these types of threads.

Is like saying every single video game is a Macho Power Fantasy because Gears of Wars features muscular men killing fictional Reptile Men with fictional chainsawgun

When you've got stuff like Jin Kazama looking like a 32 year old Mr. Universe contestant when he's supposed to be a high school student, or Aerith looking like she just started high school but she's 22 and beats up gangsters for a hobby, that's when you realize that it's just a stylized fantasy, and you relax

Liking moe doesn't make you a pedophile, but if you're a grown ass man and think that stuff is cute, then I don't agree with that.

Of course that would be creepy. How is playing a game with a cute aesthetic in anyway similar to that?

Aerith looks like a 32 year-old woman.

So guys over the age over 14 can't think things are cute?

Not everything is about sex... I can look at a woman or an anime girl and think to myself, she's really cute, without feeling the need to go wank myself into oblivion. I've really never understood that. Cute things are cute, there's nothing wrong with that.

22y/o Male btw.

Let's put it this way:

What if I had an avatar of some random 12yr old girl.. who isn't my daughter.

Would you find that strange.. or disturbing? Because it would be.

Why not ? Is there an age requirement for liking cute things ?

I am 31 so i guess i am just allowed to like games where i kill stuff dudebro style ? Or is that just for kids ? What should i like ?

Very great writeup Zel, but I'm not sure why you bother. The people you're addressing aren't going to change their minds as they judge based on looks and not actual content. Yeah, it's annoying, but that's just how the internet is.

Zel, you were really offended by that last night? Thicker skin, mang.

Oh, and this thread probably wasn't a good idea lol

What did I miss this time?
