Best looking WATER effects in a game!

Oblivion

As much as I felt disappointed, Mario Sunshine's seem to be the best I've seen on a console.

Okay, the pic doesn't do it justice, but the effects still are amazing when you see them.

I like Wind Waker's, too bad you couldn't dive.

and yeah Mario Sunshine water is probably the best thing on the game.

The cube seemed to excel at water effects for whatever reason. Pikmin + Mario Sunshine FTW.

Rain in MGS2.

The Toy Shop demo has the best water effects. I can't wait to see something like that in a game.

I seem to remember the water in StarFox Adventures being pretty damn good. One of the few redeeming aspects of the game.

Kameo, hands down. Not only does it have the best looking water, but it reacts just as realistic.

Ah, yes forgot about Kameo. It definitely did look damn good.

Same with Starfox, actually.

nicest looking water... hmm... there's a good amount of competetion there. Sunshine, Blue Storm, Tekken, PSO Episode II, the list goes on and on.

best water physics though, obviously go to Blue Storm, and second place goes to the original.

The Gamecube seemed to have a lot of games with great water effects. Even Wave Race had good water effects and that was a launch title. (loved the interactive loading screen)

Honorable mentions for water effects...

-Super Mario Sunshine
-Halo and Halo 2
-Beyond Good and Evil
-LOZ: Wind Waker
-Resident Evil series (GCN)

I know theres plenty more I'm forgetting.

Can anyone tell me why the cube was so good with water effects. I read somewhere that the cube had some kind of inbuilt effects base. I could be completely wrong though.

HL2's water is amazing. The way it reacts to the light, its colorization depending on the ground texture, the physics... It's hard to express it in english, but man it looks so damn real !

I'm wondering myself. Maybe the awesome water abilities were why it was called Project Dolphin.

Ditto. Have you tried throwing one of Chillas ice shards into a pool of water? Awesome slight splash effect!

There seem to be lots of games with great water. I wonder what the next graphical "thing" on the same scale will be--fire, maybe? I've seen very few realistic, cool-looking flame effects.

While these screenshots do not do it justice, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader had some great looking water.

Yep, screenshots dont do it justice though, you have to see it in motion. It almost looks like there's actual physical depth and transparency to it somehow, with light realistically bouncing and reflecting within the body of water. Its on another level.

Wow. Those Rogue leader shots remind me how ahead of its time that game was graphically.
What games had self shadowing then? Hell, some 360 games don't have it.

Best water in a game is, hands down, Silent Hunter 3. The entire game was based around the water (rough seas blocked vision, blurred the periscope, etc)... and during a heavy storm, nothing even comes close.

Stills don't do it justice.

The funny thing is, when you get in a plane and see the water from so high up - it actually looks like a computer generated image.
