Looking at this thread now, kind of surprising how many people here are now all over this. Weeks back the 'pre-hype review thread' never indicated this.

Good to see people have woken up a little. :lol

OK, I'm not feeling regret on selecting the PS3 version. This is a *MUCH* better port than Bioshock 1.

The framerate is very steady, from what I've seen thus far, and the image quality is clean and crisp (rather than blurry and crummy like the original port). The first game had performance issues immediately and they never let up (from what I saw as I only played around with a friends copy and the demo). This seems to perform pretty much the same as the original 360 game (solid 30 fps).

Seems like a great port. So, unless some nasty surprises are awaiting me, I think I can safely recommend it to anyone.

Oh, and the sound is incredibly good. I mean, it was good in the original game, but it always had a compressed sound to it that bothered me. This game sounds cleaner and more responsive in the upper and lower frequencies.

There's where you messed up. The first game got patched about a month after release. They removed the vaseline filter and better optimized the code. Bioshock 2 actually runs worse atm than Bioshock 1. Well, I guess that also depends on what resolution B2 is running at. It seems to rarely run @ 60 fps when you unlock the framerate, but then again I've notice no tearing in B2 whereas B1 definitely had tearing when you unlocked the framerate.

In short: they both perform well and almost equally.

Walked into Blockbuster looking for some random BS and there was Bioshock 2. Yea, I know, I loved Bioshock and it stands out as absolute cream of the crop for this gen of hardware and I should of been at the local Best Buy... BUT the doubt and unease over an unwarranted sequel made by a somewhat different staff got to me as well. So here I am with a rented copy for a game I wasn't really waiting for, but now that I have it, I'm eager to try it out. :D

Got to rank 4 in mp. Surprisingly enjoyable. Matchmaking is still the devil's handiwork.

Does anyone else have a problem on the pc version when you start a level or game the mouse is REALLY slow and unresponsive, then "evens out" after a few seconds?

Nah, I played the PS3 port just a few weeks ago and it was all patched up. Still looked and ran much worse than the 360 version. I did not unlock the framerate in either version, though, and am only speaking of the performance you get while the framerate is limited to 30 fps.

One thing I'm curious about with Bioshock 2 are textures. While the comparison shots suggested that the two versions were the same, I can't help but wonder if the PS3 version has some texture quality reductions going on. The textures overall just aren't all that good. If you look closely at many (but definitely not all) surfaces they are pretty blurry.

The Audio logs are as great as the first game
The gameplay has been improved significantly
The visuals have been given a good clean up
The story thus far is entertaining
The multiplayer is a heap of fun

Not too sure why people keep saying that it's missing something, it isn't missing a thing, it's adding a whole lot of goodness into the mix. Play on

Yea, I noticed this as well. Bioshock 1 seems to have retained the same textures from its 360 counterpart (I played the 360 version when it came out). Since I don't have a 360, though, I can't really tell. But, yea, there are some ugly textures in Rapture. Maybe this is why the bathyspheres don't connect to these areas? :D

the most important question: are the audio logs as good as ever?

Yup they are indeed. Its cool that there's loads of Andrew Ryan ones as well I was kinda bummed that I had to stove his head in in bio 1.

They've even improved the audio logs in a way over the first game:

Debates between Sofia and Ryan are awesome.

while you are right, the thing that most people are missing, in my opinion, is the novelty appeal that BioShock had when it come out. Also, I remeber Rapture looking far more illustrious in BS1.

Because no matter how you spin it we've been to Rapture before. The first game was heavily praised for its unique, creative environment, especially the opening.

Rapture is just as good as always and has a few new tricks, but the reality is we've been there. That initial impact is gone because Rapture is now an established (as in, franchise) location rather than a trip to a mystical new world.

Quick impressions for an hour and a half of SP:

I really love this game. They successfully managed to capture the lonely, destroyed beauty of Rapture from Bioshock 1. I just can't help but explore every nook and cranny as I go.

I also love how they really make you feel like a Big Daddy (aesthetically) with the Helmet view, the powerful sound you make when you walk and jump and how you can see a shadow of yourself whenever you're near fire. So awesome.

I do have two complaints, though: why can't we walk past Security Bots we hack? They seem to always fly right in front of me and try to go past me, but they stop me in my tracks when we collide since I can't go through them. It's pretty annoying.

And I don't particularly like what they've done to you as a Big Daddy in terms of gameplay. You lose health just as fast as your character in the first Bioshock, FROM SPLICERS, of all enemies. I'm a Big Daddy, I should be able to absorb nukes, but one or two bullets from a Splicer or even one wrench whack from them can take my health way down or even kill me.

Because of the paragraph above, the increase in Splicers per battle isn't too enjoyable, either. It'd be a lot more tolerable if the above paragraph was addressed in an update or something (the difficulty I'm playing on is Medium, btw).

Overall, though, I really enjoy Bioshock 2. Just a shame that I won't be able to enjoy the first-time experience as long as I did for Bioshock 1 (I heard B2 is only 8-10hrs?)

Oh and Drill FTMFW. The Drill is the SHIT.

just finished the 360 version (no spoilers):

-gameplay is improved in every way
-fights often get too chaotic and hectic
-texture reloading is still a massive problem
-great level design
-good soundtrack
-story falls appart at the end, feels like they had to cut a lot of stuff out and had finish it in some way. after the outro, i felt very unstatisfied (it felt like a bad hollywood sequel: just too much, not in tone with the prequel)
-lot of retcon
-great voice work
-the last hour has way too much action, complety ignores the gameplay elements that make bioshock great (its still not a great shooter).

i dont know what to say about bs 2. as a game, its much better. but the story really dissapointed.

That's interesting as I've read the opposite. Can't wait to find out for myself. Such a shame on texture reloading.

Well I believe I'm through with scoffing at the addition of online multiplayer to "games that don't need them" because while I still think games like this and Uncharted 2 didn't necessarily need the multiplayer, in the long run I feel that both are better products because of it. I tip my hat to these devs.

Different ending maybe? There is a total of four.

The need for the game to be a challenge and just not a walk through the park outweighs what it's suppose to be like, I suppose.

Anyway, I just got to the beginning of
Ryan Amusements
and holy moly is it a big level. It's going to take a long time to explore every part of it.

Time to go play some more multiplayer (never thought I'd be typing that up).

Im up through Ryan Amusements so far, and Im really not feeling the game. There are a ton more audio logs (or least it seems) in this game, but the narrative isnt even a fraction as interesting and engrossing as the first game, so its kind of all for nought. The art design and world doesn't feel as cohesive or as inspired as the first game, either. In that game, I was constantly taking a moment soak in the incredible environment. So far here, Im mostly just pressing on (although there were a few nice visual treats in Ryan Amusements). Im also shocked at all the low res textures (360 version). Granted, its been a good year or so since I last played the original, but I dont recall it being so muddy at places.

On the plus side, the level design is ace and seems to lean more towards the darker and moody, and playing as a big daddy is nowheres near as bad as I had thought it would be. Gameplay has been refined and is definitely a step up.

I really dislike the Little Sister escort crap, but I don't want to harvest them because I am playing WONDERFUL on the WONDERFUL/HITLER scale. Oh well. :\

You can always just dunk them in the wall if you don't want to escort.

Dammit! I was trying so hard to hold off on this game for a little while, but reading these impressions has convinced me that I need this game now.

I'm going to set aside my ocd planet scanning in ME2 and instead get lost in Rapture tonight and indulge my ocd audio log collecting.

My poor wallet :(

Just tried MP. It's really good. I have it on PS3. I'm REALLY far away from my router (which usually causes me issues for online games on PSN) yet, NO lag at all. Great netcode so far.

Could be hardware related.

They weren’t. I was comparing the 360 and PS3 versions of Bioshock 2 and chucked in the original on 360 after playing for a while last night. The textures, particularly on doors and such look to have taken a step backwards. In all honesty, I think they’ve dropped texture quality across the board to ensure relative parity between all versions of the game. Character models look a lot better though.

Yeah, game runs really smooth online in regards to lag.

Yep

the EXACT same problem with mouse controls are back again ...amazing

Basically had to use the same fix I did with Bio1 which was:

- going into DefUser.ini and User.ini

- changing ALL of the mouse sensitivity values (they're "2000" here, in Bio1 it was "2500") to about 950. There all ALOT of entries with those values, so to save on the tedium, use something like Notepad++ and apply the "replace all" command.

Cheers everyone

I tried this, although I could not find a user.ini file. I still have a problem with mouse sensitivity. One minute the sensitivity is way too low, the next minute it is way too high. X and Y axis seem to have different settings also. If I die and respawn it fixes itself for a while then starts happening again. I have no problems with any other PC game I have.

Edit: My audio also sounds like I am running two instances of the game at once. It seems to work OK after loading a level, but the opening videos and main menu have this effect for some reason.

oh shi, i did not know that. The escort stuff sucks. I am constantly getting disoriented with so many splicers firing at my big tin head. Did the first game have that blood effect?

So ugh... is it normal for the game to take an unusually long amount of time to install on the PS3?

I put the disc in and started the game about 5 minutes and it is still installing... there isn't a progress bar so I have no idea if there is a problem or not.

Edit: Of course, as soon as I post this it finishes. Nevermind...

The opposite for me. I'm playing on PC and while some games have been decent, the last two Capture the Sister games had some ridiculous lag. As with most of these games, it's going to take a good host for the best experience.

Also, the game has crashed on me twice while playing multiplayer. Not good.

Okay, so Im not crazy :lol I knew the first game looked much better. This one has its moments, but its shockingly uneven. I encountered two posters in a row in one of the locations. The first was razor sharp and readable, the second was a low-res, blurry mess.

The user.ini file is actually located somewhere in your <appdata> folder. Try just searching your Windows install drive for user.ini

I've also noticed the same peculiar sensitivity behavior from the first one. It'll take the game a minute or so to adjust to your settings. It helps to manually set the sensitivity in-game I think.

This + the widescreen fuckup is pretty disappointing, honestly.

Pretty damn good so far, definitely more fun the first. The drill is really satisfying and so is the fully upgraded rivet gun.

I'm up to the 4th chapter I think, and its definitely paced well. Big sister is an ok enemy but it would have been better if they didn't warn you when she was coming.

I just lay down all my trap rivets and set up some of those tornado trap plasmids and that alone lops off a giants chunk of health. Should have made it a bit more difficult like the big daddys from the first game.

From what I've played the underwater bits are such a disappointment and other then the drill and some sound effects it feels exactly like jack. Which seems sorta stupid. I mean I'm a Big daddy and I'm running around like a normal person and taking damage like a normal person from run of the mill splicers.

Still tons of fun though and can't wait to finish up the single player and try out multiplayer.

Thanks! Adjusting the user.ini seems to have fixed it. It does take a minute or so to adjust each time I start up but it is better than nothing. I can't believe they didn't notice any of these problems during developement.

I'm having a blast with the multiplayer. I played a few rounds of it for about an hour and a half tonight. I've only been playing shooters at all for about a year since I got my 360 so I'm still really new to online multiplayer, so I'd say it's pretty accessible too and easy to get into.

Only thing driving me crazy is we lost connection to the host a few times, twice when I was winning the match. :lol

Now back to single player. (Once Lost is over.)
