Now I have played a lot of RPG’s but i must have played though each baldur’s gate title at least 4 times and most other infinity engine games (made by bioware used by blackisle) several times.

I find it refreshing to truly be able to create your own character and shape them by the decisions you make in the game world. Let the rivers of the sword coast run red in baldur’s gate if you feel the need. Give into the darkside in KOTOR it’s all up to the player.

Now don’t get me wrong I love the final fantasy games but I would much rather make my own character and shape my own destiny then play is a 17 year old how has trouble understanding wtf is going on.

The scripts in their games are pure gold some of my fav’s

“Noober” in the town of naskhel in BG1 flows you’re party around asking stupid questions

his brother

“Neebler” in Trademeet in BG2 does the same thing ROFL!

Biff the understudies theater performance was classic in BG2

Plenty of classic lines from the original starwars movies that got ripped off in KOTOR were too funny.

I also loved the architecture of the buildings in the Baldur’s gate games!

Yay for Bioware!!!

EDIT: The best thing Microsoft has done for the console industry is get Bioware games into peoples homes!

So you proved that according to GameRankings (an inherently weak source of proof anyway) that BioWare is indeed the tallest of ALL the midgets.

I don't know considering most RPG's have to hold their audience's(sp?) attention for 50+ hours I would say you're just a hater.
I think it's pretty obvious that I'm a hater, but it's not without plenty of good reason. Though it mostly boils down to the existence of games that are a million times better than just about any RPG. (Only RPG that interested me deeply was Vagrant Story.)

Then get the fuck out of a bioware application thread and go play goldeneye rogue agent

Being a former Saquaresoft fanboy who finally got sick of PSX rpgs, who then bought the rpgless x-box who then borrowed KOTOR and then bought it for himself. I am a bit enamoured with KOTOR. To me atleast KOTOR was a breath of air.
However I would say you are correct 90% of the time concerning that most rpg's are generic- that is why Bioware and Atlus are my two favourite rpg companies . :)

In comparison, I prefer Bioware's RPGs, and western-RPGs in general, to Japanese RPGs.

To me, I pretty much equate Japanese RPGs to: "Effeminate spikey haired teenage boy in questionable clothes must save the world from teh ancient eval!!!"

The most original Japanese RPGs I've played would probably be...

Parasite Eve (PSOne)
Robotrek (SNES)
Brandish (SNES)
Breath of Fire I&II (SNES)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Beyond Oasis(Genesis) (Japanese?)
Lufia: And the Fortress of Doom (SNES)
Terraenigma (SNES)
Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Xenogears (SNES)
Final Fantasy VII (PSOne)
Hydlide (NES)

Like the original poster, I prefer RPGs that aren't too damn linear. I like my main character to be like a lump of clay that I get to mold. Japanese RPGs usually have a really tight linear storyline, which while some people like that, I don't because it makes me feel more like I'm watching an interactive movie. That's how I like my Silent Hill-type games, but not my RPGs. =P

BOTTOMLINE:

With Square-Enix, it's like, "To get the magic orb, we must slay the dragon!".

With Bioware, it's like, "To get the magic orb, we must slay the dragon or hold it's hatchling babies for ransom or sneak in and steal it while it's sleeping or sneak in and kill the dragon in it's sleep or befriend the dragon in an attempt to get the orb or HELL, let's forget about that damn magic orb, go back to the tavern, get drunk and get into a brawl, and sleep with hookers!!!"

That would be a good proof if gaming started this gen.

Sign me up :D

Kinda lukewarm on NWN, though. I constantly find myself missing the painted/drawn 'lush' backdrops. Everything in NWN just looks so damn boxy. Hordes of the Underdark was a return to form, but even then, it just didn't take ahold of me like the Inifinity Engine games did.

I look forward to the day when processing power is sufficient to render 3d environments with the depth of detail that earlier 2d game backdrops could provide.

I used to work with with the nephew of one of the guys who started bioware, he tells me that his uncle still drives a windstar minian! :lol Even though, he's racking in millions of dollars, the guy also used to be a docter here in Edmonton, before he started bioware.

KotOR was incredible. I fully expect another masterpiece out of Jade Empire.
They fixed my one big complaint with KotOR by making the combat look exciting in JE.
Can't wait for JE.

I am a big fan of the BG series. It's ridiculous how much time I spent with them back in college. I had never played d&d before and it was a hellish nightmare to learn how the ruleset worked (the first one I played was BG2, wherein you relied a lot on magic -or at least knowing how to counter it- instead of the more comfortable hack'n'slash of BG1). I played it an insane number of times, though I finished it only twice (the second time to import my character to the expansion pack, which was... not so good).

I disliked NWN. I found the restriction on the number of characters you were allowed to take (well, you and a henchman) very annoying. With a little bit of planning it can be enjoyable, but seriously, I don't like to play such a game without a thief (stupid traps and locks). I remember restarting it like a dozen times without ever making it to the end of the game. The first expansion was dull, and while the second if I recall correctly allowed you to take another henchman (a party of 3 would be enough) I was drained by the two first efforts and a bunch of user-designed mods I also played.

Last time I checked BG3 and NWN2 were in the works. I'll cross my fingers and say a little prayer.

Haven't tried KOTOR yet.

What's the word on Jade Empire? I remember reading some negative stuff, but it might have been just fanboy bashing.

Frankly, I can rarely stand most console RPGs. The last one I finished (and enjoyed) that wasn't KOTOR was Panzer Dragoon Saga.

KOTOR 2 and probably Jade Empire, then, are pretty high on my list... still have to go through KOTOR a second time, though... so it's going to be a while :)

Jade Empire is IMHO shaping to be every bit as good as KOTOR. The first videos were kinda bad looking, especially the animation who had a very mortal kombat look to it (meaning: WRONG WRONG STUPID LOOKING). The latest builds look much better if not really perfect.
I have a video of a rather recent (I think the latest ever shown) build of the game on my site if some people want to check how the game is shaping.

Okay, so I'm not the only one who thought that Throne of Bhaal stank? Myself, I got stuck right at the spot where
"Gorion" appears and attacks the party
. From what I read of the plot at GameFAQs, the storyline is faily assinine, so I just stopped playing.

ToB didn't stink, but it kicked the ruleset and common sense and whatever it was you learnt after the trillion hours you spent with the series right out through the window. There were many instances where difficulty was pumped up for the sake of... I don't know, testing your "godly powers" I guess. I recall
a dragon inmune to slashing damage (why??? and you were given no clue whatsoever, just got the "weapon ineffective" message or whatever, which can mean lots of things), the Slayer or whichever was his name with his zillion hit points, that drow cleric you had to kill several times, and above all the fucking HUMAN monk who was inmune to everything, including time stop.

Some additions were cool, others sucked. Overall it was ok, nothing else. I swore not to play games where you could reach insane levels, it's just too difficult to implement.

Edit: ahem, what's the tag to black out text? Edit: checked.

I just wanted to add my love, I'm a big fan of BioWare as well. I'm supremely happy to see that not only have they become more popular but are now a multiplatform success.

Any new PC RPG's coming out akin to Diablo 2? I would like to see some with Doom 3/ Half-Life 2 graphics as I just got a new PC. I already own NWN, Diablo 2, Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, etc.

Edit: Not a fan of MMORPGs!

Yes one problem in BG2:TOB is you’re party so God like they had to come up with some crazy battle ideas to keep the difficulty up.

BTW you don’t fight gorain it’s a master wraith who assumes his form and screws with you’re mind. He would also screw with anybody you were romancing by Turing into somebody they love and say crazy shit.

I just started playing KOTOR yesterday and I'm hooked, although the game seems to start out slow. I'm still on the first planet and I hear it gets much better after that? I sure hope so. It's still a pretty sweet game though.

There is this talking two handed sword in BG2, One of his Lines is “murder death kill” I could stop laughing when he said it as I plowed through some Slavers.

The first planet is setup to ease you into the game. It is absolutely boring in comparison the the rest of the game.

+1 Bioware, makes me love Edmonton ^_^

Any other Edmonton GAF'ers go crazy when they were playing MDK2 and it said the comet or whatever was headed towards Edmonton? :lol

I actually have a friend who beta tests at Bioware, he's been playing Jade Empire, and he's beat it 7 times so far. One of my other friend's' brother works there too as a programmer IIRC.

I don't know if you played it, but I remember there was a game called Sacred I think that came out not too long ago that was supposed to be like a really good Diablo clone. Though, I don't think the game was any good because I haven't heard anyone mention it.

I love NWN, but KOTOR let me down a bit. Atmosphere felt stale, water planet sucked, battles didn't feel that much different from NWN except you could do more with your characters in NWN. I hope they really have some cool battles for Jade Empire.

I think Bioware is a bit overrated here from all the PC whores. Not the best RPG dev, but since Black Isle is no more they make for the best PC RPG dev.

Yep they rock. They have pure skill when it comes to being able to attach you towards the characters your playing. I think back on the BG series of characters and it almost feels like they are old friends of mine.

I don't think their full 3D games are up to the same standard as their older stuff. Although Neverwinter Nights is great value for money thanks to the ridiculous number of MODs it has. More than 4000 i believe. Some are better games than the original.

My girlfriend (the one who actually plays the PC games, in this relationship) has that, she says it's pretty good but buggy (she needed to download a few patches so far), and it's got a really big world. She mentioned it today when we went to look at PC games.
