Bloomberg Rumor: Xbox 720 unveiling at E3 2013, launching in the same year

Here is Microsoft's E3 presentation for 2012: Not even 30 seconds in we will have the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on stage demo, then we will see that Crytek Kinect game, something related to GTA V, Forza World, Fable Journey, an unannounced 3rd party game, and then Halo 4. Don Mattrick will come out clapping and smiling and then say, "Wow! Did you see those great games. Even seven years into the Xbox 360 there are still amazing gaming experience coming out." A montage showcasing some Fall 2012 XBLA games as well as two to three on stage upcoming Kinect game demos. Some slight info about Xbox Live on Windows 8 integration. There will be some circle-jerking about their #1 sales ranking for the past year and the current number of Xbox Live gold members will be told. Additional partner apps for the dashboard will be revealed and then the Xbox 360 will have a price cut, the $200 SKU will now be $150 and the $300 sku will be $250. Don Mattrick will end by saying, "As you can see we have the best lineup ever in Xbox history and 2012 is sure to be another great year. Thank you for watching this presentation and have a great E3." Claps will be heard and then press will leave.

I never understand why people are in a rush for new hardware.

The best years of a console's lifespan are the later ones, where devs know what they are doing. Look back at the first year of games for the 360/WII/PS3- that's the kind of quality we'll get for the first year with new consoles, just with better graphics, as devs struggle to get their heads around what they have to play with. And probably Kinect/Move built in. Shudder.

It'll be tech demos galore that look nice and have all kinds of motion control/community functions, with early adopters getting shafted as usual. Why be in a rush to get there?

Sure, it might be wise for MS and Sony not to let Nintendo have a year or more head start, but last year was a fantastic year for games, and there's plenty of good stuff coming up this year too.

Because its almost been 8 years... do you not realize the significance of that? Because as I said, PC gamers are being screwed by the limitations of consoles. Because all we are getting now are sequels. It's time for something new. If you don't want to purchase the new consoles then don't.

Yep. That's about it.

Why? I'd say it was one of the best.

I'm not to impressed by this generation either. I suppose mostly because i remember a lot of the stings. The nickel and diming of gamers unfortunately is just getting started as well.

$70(cdn) games (Now $60 thank god)
$699 console
RROD
PS3 losing BC, then linux, and a general removal of features.
Sixaxis
Pay to play online
DLC shenanigans
Retailer pre order shenanigans
Release first/patch later mentality
Online pass code thing
Friend codes
Selling of impulse to gamestop
Death of independent studios and large publishers gobbling everything up.
COD franchise
Sequalitis in general
Everything is a shiny UE3 fps

Some good things happened though...

I embraced Steam/GOG
Flower
Batman:AA
Valkyria Chronicles
Good party fun with motion controls
Starcraft 2
Decent f2p revenue models

pc gamers are also benefiting greatly from the optimization of console games. I havn't needed to upgrade my pc in 5 years. Most of reason pc gaming has picked up so much as of late is because games dont need a 10000 dollar rig to play them.

Well good thing you'll have all of this year and most of next with these consoles.

Frankly Im ready for another leap. 8 years is a long time.

Those games coming out this year and next aren't changing, but I don't need development for all the sequels to these games coming out to also release on the same consoles. I don't need another uncharted, killzone, Mario, Zelda, gears of war, halo, crysis, elder scrolls and fallout on these consoles. I've seen what they can do, seen the best they'll get out of them, I'm ready to see what they do with new technology.

If Microsoft aren't showing the 720 this year their E3 is going to be the worst ever. They're clearly underestimating nintendo, as they don't feel the need to have their next-gen console announced so their fans know one is coming, whilst the Wii U is on sale.

Risky.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will release the next version of its Xbox console in 2013 at the earliest, as the company squeezes at least one more year of sales out of its current model, said two people with knowledge of the matter.

The company may show the successor to its Xbox 360 at next year’s E3 conference in June 2013 and put it on sale that same year, said the people

This doesn't exactly say 2013 like the topic title suggests. It suggests 2013 is possible.

Personally I suspect MS may currently have a vague idea they'd like to ideally hit 2013, but actually end up in 2014.

"While we appreciate all the interest in our long-range plans for the future, we can confirm that there will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon," Microsoft told IGN.

I don't understand the point of stories like this. I've never personally seen a company spokesperson say "Yeah, our new hotness is coming pretty soon, so if you haven't bought our currently hotness yet, you should probably should just skip it and wait for this"

I love that this gen has been going on for this long already. What is the next gen going to bring us? More AA? Better textures?

I am playing BF3 on the PS3 and the graphics look fucking great. I am perfectly fine with the current level of graphic fidelity. Uncharted 3 looks amazing. BF3 looks amazing.

I have never pumped this much online hours into a console before.

Between the 360 and PS3, we have a crazy amount of AAA titles plus fucking amazing indie titles and downloadable games on XBLA and PSN.

One of the best generations for me. I am in no rush for the next gen.

New Call of Duty.

I am not joking.

Indeed, the first party games look amazing on the PS3 (and some 3rd party titles). If only they had bumped up the RAM to 2GB on PS3, I bet we would be blown away at how much more they can squeeze out of it. I think that was the weakest link in PS3 to have only 512MB and not unified memory. The current gen would have lasted even more if they would have more RAM in 360/PS3.

Honestly I wish I could modify my PS3 to have more RAM and see what the devs like ND, GG, SMS could do.

Personally I suspect MS may shoot for 2013, but actually end up in 2014.

So you think they'll have had games in development for the console for three years by the time it launches? (Seeing as that obsidian game had already been in development for seven months) No way.

All of the 360's launch title's were just upscaled xbox/gc/ps2 titles. Titles developed specifically for the system came much later.

To be honest the source in the OP doesn't sound like it's an actual leak, more just an educated observation from someone like Pachter.

If a repeat of this gen is to follow then MS will want their console out before PS4. Many speculate that it may be launched Q1 2014. As such MS may think of Q4 2013.

One thing is for certain, if not this E3, then the next E3 will be all about the next box for them if the world reaches 22nd of Dec 2012 ;P

Why should it be significant? Because it has been 7 years since the last xbox released? a whole 2 more years than the old console cycle? High risk and cost of research and development is of more importance to platform owners than sending out new hardware that isn't thought through properly- any new consoles will have to survive for a similar cycle, and the market is changing fast.

We are getting plenty of stuff that isn't sequels. They just aren't always at the top of the charts.

So you think they'll have had games in development for the console for three years by the time it launches?

It's certainly possible. Dev times take forever nowdays. I'm sure some will be in development a lot longer than that.

Hell the only games I know hitting two year cycles are the Assassins Creeds and COD's, where they're just iterating on an existing game and engine. Next gen games would start from scratch.

2013 feels pretty likely, though.

Did PS2 sales drop for the year and a half from when the PS3 was announced till the point when it was released?

that actually sounds like a good plan, but I'm so put off to the idea of buying another microsoft console again =/

Same. I probably won't get an Xbox 3 until late next gen for exclusives. I don't want to play in a confined ecosystem that charges money and pollutes the UI with ads. It's insulting. I'll stick with Steam.

However, PC ports get better when all consoles are refreshed. So I want it sooner than later.

“They’re still selling a lot of Xbox 360, and they’re making money,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities Inc. in Los Angeles. “I don’t think the world needs them to put a new console out just because we’re bored.”

I love you Pachter.

Fair enough, I agree that all of those series have shown what they can do on this hardware. They should be being prepped for next gen, and I'm sure several of them are.

But thousands of games are released every year, and most of the stuff I've enjoyed this gen fell outside of the top 20 chart. New consoles mean a level of funding that will make the next gen even more generic than this one. There won't be any risk taking when the development costs of even smaller games goes through the roof.

Sure, I want new consoles eventually too. But it's only been 7 years for the 360, and 5 1/2 for the Wii/PS3. I'd rather they waited and made them future-proof to a limited extent, with good launch games, rather than rushing out some piece of tat that is obsolete in a matter of months.

If we really see nothing till E3 2014 then damn is the Wii U going to get a headstart and a half.

A headstart at what exactly? Slightly better looking versions of what we have now?

The irony (for me) is that what people are clamoring for isn't innovation, its just more flashy graphics. And that's simply not enough to convince people to stick their hands in the pockets to spend hundreds of dollars on new hardware.

Look at the Vita!

As a piece of pure handheld gaming hardware its vastly more powerful than its forerunners and loaded up with every input device possible on a device of its size... and yet its hardly setting the world on fire.

Has it occurred to people that MS are holding fire on the next XBox because its going to be hard selling people a new $400 box when all it can offer is slightly prettier graphics over what they have now.

And honestly, no matter how powerful the hardware is, not all games are suddenly going to be running at 1080p/60 when logic dictates that you can always push double the amount of visual information by running at 30, more if you shrink the framebuffer size.

E3 is going to feel really weird if neither microsoft nor sony announce anything about the next-gen, especially the conferences.

I suspect Microsoft want to do with Kinect what Nintendo did with the Wii, and come up with something that is built into every game going, to differentiate it from it's rivals.

I was wondering the other day what impact that would have on, say, OnLive and any other future streaming service. Say, for the sake of argument, all Xbox games have kinect functionality required rather than optional, would that limit the game being available on OnLive, or would it have to have it's own port etc.

Amazing. This post needs to be saved and reviewed after the press conference is over! You might have nailed many of the major talking points already.

It's correct in all but one thing:

the crytek kinect game won't be there. It's been bumped to 720.

He forgot Tomb Raider and RE 6. MS will leach on those and act stupid like they are on xbox only, and media will act as well.

I think the promises of more ram, a better gpu, better CPU all help in allowing things not possible today.

Every generations new hardware has created some sort of innovation in ways people didn't expect, I don't see why this next gen would be any different.

This will guarantee PS4 launching exactly head to head. Sony has the time now to move into final productization of the hardware and launch with a well tested piece of hw for xmas 2013. Based on the rough PS3 late launch and Sony's recent comments I am convinced they will not miss the boat of 2013 now.

We should see PS4 leaks increase by end of Summer if this is the case.

Someone should pull an Apple and show the console and then say "and you can buy it in two weeks". That would shock the competition. But only Apple would do that...

That hasn't really been the case with Apple for a while though. Even if they formally announce at shipping, all the facets of their new products have been well reported and pictured months ahead of the "announcement". It's like Christmas as a kid, we just play along and act surprised at their unveilings.

Well... i believe that @ E3 2012 when Nintendo (current market leader WW) will show its new console almost ready to ship and neither Microsoft or Sony wouldn't have anything
*at least to try* to steal the media attention... then something is really wrong in the game industry as we know it :)
