Bloomberg Rumor: Xbox 720 unveiling at E3 2013, launching in the same year

Here is Microsoft's E3 presentation for 2012: Not even 30 seconds in we will have the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on stage demo, then we will see that Crytek Kinect game, something related to GTA V, Forza World, Fable Journey, an unannounced 3rd party game, and then Halo 4. Don Mattrick will come out clapping and smiling and then say, "Wow! Did you see those great games. Even seven years into the Xbox 360 there are still amazing gaming experience coming out." A montage showcasing some Fall 2012 XBLA games as well as two to three on stage upcoming Kinect game demos. Some slight info about Xbox Live on Windows 8 integration. There will be some circle-jerking about their #1 sales ranking for the past year and the current number of Xbox Live gold members will be told. Additional partner apps for the dashboard will be revealed and then the Xbox 360 will have a price cut, the $200 SKU will now be $150 and the $300 sku will be $250. Don Mattrick will end by saying, "As you can see we have the best lineup ever in Xbox history and 2012 is sure to be another great year. Thank you for watching this presentation and have a great E3." Claps will be heard and then press will leave.

Quicksilver4648 is from the future!

I've said all along I believe in a fall 2013 release date. There's no way tons great software could be ready this year for Xbox3. I cannot wait to see a next-gen Elder Scrolls running on this thing, and I do hope for what EPIC and CRYTEK hope for the next-gen, a 10x leap in power and at least 4GB RAM.

HERETIC!!!

I mean, yeah I could see that... me, I haven't even bought one :)

I sold it to a co-worker. I'll keep using my phone for gaming. It's a nice device but I don't have the time to sit around and watch 4 minutes of cutscenes in Uncharted, as I take a dump. I just want to dive into gameplay.

Hm, so the 360 will be 8 years old by the time a successor is on the horizon... that's a very long time for an electronic product. Console cycles shouldn't be longer than 5-6 years at max.

Still think they will unveil it this fall after Halo 4 hype machine has died down(maybe at VGA if not earlier) and then do a showcase early in 2013 where games are shown and details are given before a 1H 2013 launch.

Dec 2012- VGA's, console officially shown for the first time with a sizzle reel.

Jan, Feb or March-Hour long live special done where all the hardware details are given and games are shown in depth. This would be followed by a stead stream of marketing and hype building through both the gaming and traditional media.

2-3 months after the showcase console goes on sale sometime before the end of the FY.

Would be the perfect strategy to allow Halo 4 to stand on it's own along with all the other big 3rd party games releasing this year and then to take advantage of the normally slow part of the year.

I also think it's going to cost more than most people on GAF seem to think, $400/$500. The early 2013 launch would then allow Holiday 2014 to be the first huge season for them with dropping hardware costs allowing a price reduction that targets it more at the mainstream consumer. 300/400 at that time with the typical Black Friday and other Holiday deals allowing you to get it for 250/350 with games bundled.

A headstart at what exactly? Slightly better looking versions of what we have now?

The irony (for me) is that what people are clamoring for isn't innovation, its just more flashy graphics. And that's simply not enough to convince people to stick their hands in the pockets to spend hundreds of dollars on new hardware.

Look at the Vita!

As a piece of pure handheld gaming hardware its vastly more powerful than its forerunners and loaded up with every input device possible on a device of its size... and yet its hardly setting the world on fire.

Has it occurred to people that MS are holding fire on the next XBox because its going to be hard selling people a new $400 box when all it can offer is slightly prettier graphics over what they have now.

And honestly, no matter how powerful the hardware is, not all games are suddenly going to be running at 1080p/60 when logic dictates that you can always push double the amount of visual information by running at 30, more if you shrink the framebuffer size.

Just like this gen, next gen will be dictated by software/OS and how easy it is to connect to your friends. Social features will be key in the next gen. Last gen the only reason you booted up without a game was to manage your memory card. This gen, it's the portal to all your gaming. It will only get more intense next gen.

I think next gen will prove that the market only buys consoles for two franchises: Mario and COD. Guess which system will have both.

Microsoft hasn't done anything lately that makes me think their next console will be very good. The 360 was my first console of this generation and I enjoyed it a lot but I don't plan on getting the next one. The major games I played for Xbox were Halo and Gears and both original trilogies are over so I don't really care if I play any new games the series might have.

Also, I don't like that it probably won't have a disc drive.

And that's were the WiiU is going to have it's biggest problem. You don't just have a quality online service from day one Heck you can't even buy one in. Looking at PSN,Xbox Live they took years to get anywhere near to where they are today.

Time, effort and serious investment is what has them in great postions for next gen.

From their past online endeavors which can best be described as 'uninterested' and considering that Nintendo seems to be making a concerted effort to attract the 'core' gamers i can't see those same players being happy with a crap online service.

Not the WiiU since people aren't going out in droves to play the single player of COD. People want to be connected and play with their friends. Personally, I have no clue what system I'm buying out of the three next gen. All I know is that I'll buy the ones my friends do so that I can play with them online.

Wii U will support the MP portion of COD. Nintendo is dumb but I'm pretty sure they can get a basic matchmaking feature to work. That's all these gaming "services" really are in the first place. That and a place to buy shit.

Doesn't matter if MS' box can connect you to friends better than anything else...if all your friends are buying some other system instead. Why isn't every ps3 COD player ditching their system for a 360?

Fine by me. I just hope MS does not do an Original Xbox and dump the 360 shortly after the 720 launches. I think the 360 still has enough life in it to keep running with the 720 as a budget offering.

Kinda wanted them to hint about 720 this E3, just to get people thinking. Unless Nintendo have a killer lineup for launch, how are they going to stop people from just waiting it out for 720? (Based upon the 720 being more powerful and not just a Kinect Hub)

You really are giving Nintendo way too much credit here in regards to online. Let's see what kinds of online eggs they offer first before we start counting the WiiU's chickens.

Didn't say anything about ditching a system mid gen. Ever hear the term "pot committed". If all your friends are buying one system... why would you buy another so you can't play with them?

It took around 4 years for the PS3 to achieve a 40/60 split with the 360 for first month CoD sales.

I really don't see how or why the user-base would rapidly flock to the Wii U.

I'm curious to see how much vendor lock-in occurs with regard to people wanting to retain Live and PSN accounts for online play.

Great news for next-gen in general. It made no sense to have a reveal this year. Next-gen for me starts Fall 2013. I wonder if MS/Sony will do all they can to dampen Wii U enthusiasm this Fall (lots of marketing for Halo 4 and whatever exclusives Sony puts out, maybe price drops too) or if they'll just ignore it and go about their holiday strategy as normal. I don't think they see it as a huge threat.

Why would they flock to the 720 or ps4?

Again... because that is where their current friends are. Unless of course you are talking about the lone wolves with no friends. Nintendo has zero base to start with. PS4 and 720 guys have their friends, their controller preference, and their online stats that they will be bringing with them.

Yay I get some breathing room between Wii U and 720 now. :)

As much as I would have liked to see next gen begin with two of the three fighting it out (competition is good), at least my wallet can rest easy for a bit.

RE: the CoD effect

With how ingrained gamertags, achievements/trophies, and friendlists have become, I don't see that market flocking over to the Wii U version, even with better graphics. They have too much invested into their respective profiles for them to care.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It would be a natural progression for them to move onto PS4 and 720 from PS3 and 360. Friends list would be intact, achievements/trophies good to go, the familiarity of it all as well.

Price drop makes perfect sense. Halo 4 will be a big push for MS, probably with a limited edition console as well. If MS are launching 2013, then they just have to impress with the last winter of 360 as their main platform.

I get the feeling MS will put effort in to stop the Wii-U getting an early lead but Sony will be concentrating on getting the VITA into more hands. Not sure what titles they have planned for the Winter. Will have to wait till E3 I guess.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo handle their 1 year head start. Nothing I've heard or seen yet tells me they will exploit it to the fullest. Getting their online network up and running will take time, and I doubt it'll be as robust and feature rich as PSN and XBL initially. It took Sony and MS years to get those services to the point where they are at now.

That's what I'm saying is that next gen will be all about social features and connecting with your friends and carrying on your existing gaming habits. People with established friends and just more than likely just going to carry over to the new system as the thought of starting over on something you've built up and losing your friends seems like a waste when most people just play third party games anyway.

This doesn't exactly say 2013 like the topic title suggests. It suggests 2013 is possible.

Personally I suspect MS may currently have a vague idea they'd like to ideally hit 2013, but actually end up in 2014.

Either MS has something up their sleeve to which we aren't privy or else they are making a colossal strategic error by not launch this year. 2013 seems to be a terrible time to launch. No significant technological or cost advantage over 12 and enormous risk to momentum and losing their dominance.

I bet you buy 360+. ;)

Call it a hunch.

CoD was never going to be a driving factor for people migrating to Wii U. However, it's incredibly short sighted to think that CoD has major sway on the purchases of the majority of the market. If people do begin to transition to the Wii U en mass, it will obviously be for reasons other than CoD. However, a good number of those people will purchase CoD on their brand new shiny systems. Of course those numbers wont be as high as on xbox at first (if ever), but as the generation progresses and the Wii U userbase grows, so will CoD sales on that platform.

tl;dr - CoD is a very big and important game but wont determine whether or not most people buy a wii u. That'll depend on overall software lineups, not a single game.

I'm buying the system my friends do. I really have no clue which one that is. I'm not attached to my MS gamertag or PSN name. If all my friends get a WiiU that's what I'll get. I just want to play games online with my friends.

I'm just guessing blind here. ;p

Letting Wii U have 1 year lead, look how it helped the X360, and launching the same year / timeframe as PS4 could be huge mistakes. Milking X360 another year does wonders to the company's account books, but could be costly long term.

The association between CoD, the 360 and Live has been one of the major drivers of its success in the US.

CoD is simply the best example though - the phenomena applies to the network services provided in general. There's a level of inertia that will stall any migration to the Wii U.

This is good news.

Backlog is massive on PS360 and halo 4 is coming in September or November anyway.

Not to mention wii U.
